_"Ponyboy glanced at Johnny, the stars twinkling above them like distant memories. Johnny sat quietly beside him, not needing to say anything. That was how it always was with them-they didn’t have to talk much to understand each other. The cool night air pressed softly against his skin, and the scars on his arms were exposed, no longer hidden or shameful. For the first time, they didn’t feel like reminders of his failures or the pain he’d gone through._
_"They were just... there, part of him, but not all of him._
_"He had spent so long running, believing that he needed to escape, that he’d find something better if he could just get away from everything that hurt. Foster care, the shame, the distance from his brothers-it all weighed on him like a heavy coat he couldn’t shrug off. He thought if he went far enough, he’d leave that part of himself behind. He thought he'd find something more, something that would make it all make sense. But every step he took, every mile that separated him from home, only seemed to pull him deeper into that emptiness. He’d been looking for answers out there, somewhere in the world, thinking they were just beyond his reach._
_"But now, sitting here in the quiet, next to Johnny, with nothing but the night sky above them and the soft sound of the breeze, it hit him. He wasn’t lost anymore. He hadn’t needed to leave to find himself. What he was searching for-this feeling of peace, of belonging, of being seen without judgment-it had been here all along. Not in the streets he wandered, not in the people he met, but in the people who had always been by his side. In Johnny, in his brothers, in the moments they shared, like this one, where nothing needed to be said to be understood._
_"He glanced down at his arms, at the scars that used to make him feel so small, so broken-the cigarette burns and scars from falling down the stairs. Now the shame that used to come with them had faded. They didn’t make him who he was anymore. What made him was sitting right here, next to Johnny, in the easy silence of the night._
_"Ponyboy thought about what he'd been expecting. He had been so sure that when he finally found what he was looking for, he would feel some grand change, like everything would fall into place in a way that was obvious and undeniable. He thought he’d feel like a different person, that the pain and confusion would disappear, that he'd know for certain that he was where he was supposed to be. But now, in this moment, he realized it wasn’t about becoming someone new. It was about realizing that who he was, who he had always been, was enough._
_"Ponyboy took a deep breath, the air cool and calming. He hadn’t found some distant place to belong. He hadn’t needed to. It was all here-his home, his family, his best friend. He’d been running in circles, looking for something he already had. The thought brought a strange sense of relief, and a small smile tugged at his lips. He felt grounded, like he had finally stopped running, finally let go of all the expectations he had placed on himself. This was enough. This was more than enough._
_"It was simple, really-just the two of them sitting under the stars, the weight of the world feeling lighter for once. He wasn’t lost anymore..._
_"Ponyboy leaned back, feeling the night wrap around them like a comforting blanket. He didn’t need to search for anything anymore. He had found it. It was right here, in the simplicity of the moment, in the quiet understanding between them._
