    The Good: Great hike, I’ve done twice with my daughter and once with my son. The mosquitos are fierce in June and July, so the best bet is to go after the first frosts in mid-August. The raspberries, thimble berries and huckleberries are best in August as well. The Bad: Since the big flood last year the bridge has been out at Rimrock Lake, sadly a young man slipped and fell in the creek there and was drowned last month. You might have to wait another year before the bridge is replaced. Elk Lake was almost completely filled with gravel by the flood, which was probably a 5,000 year event or greater. The Ugly: A campfire is nice, but the increasing use over the last 20 years on this route is having a significant impact. More and more people with poor “Leave No Trace” skills are hiking the route and leaving litter and heavily impacted campsites behind. I make sure to have extra trash bags to carry out the junk other people’s junk, yes, even that used tampon and the partially burned trash in fire rings. As Wilford Bromley used to say, “It’s the right thing to do.” If you go, take special care of the area. Don’t leave anything, don’t burn trash in a fire ring, properly dispose of human waste, camp on durable surfaces, stay on trails, don’t create parallel tracks in wet meadows. Properly store food so that bears are not tempted. Leave the area better than you found it.

    • @ruggedendeavours756
      @ruggedendeavours756 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed! I always pack everything out. The areas we did camp already had fire rings built that looked like they had been there for years so we didn’t make any new ones. I’m a big advocate of LNT and I think it’s something everyone should practice.

      @@ruggedendeavours756 My first “job” in the NPS, 51 years ago, was as a volunteer (VIP) / college intern in the South Fork of the Merced River in Yosemite NP at the Buck Camp backcountry ranger station. 9 weeks of hiking to lakes, doing visitor contact and education, mitigating decades old fire rings, and packing out un-burnable trash for the princely sum of $4.00/day, so backcountry campsite maintenance is kind of “thing” for me. PAID to go backpacking, who’d a thunk it? It paid off the following year when I landed a seasonal interpretation job ($3.83/hr!), and spent the next 36 years in interp and law enforcement. When I retired I jumped in with the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness Foundation and did three week-long trail work projects in the Stillwater and Red Lodge Creek drainages. Can’t haul rocks now like I used to, though.

Try the dirt road going South to Independence, deep in the heart of the Ab-B; just before the end hike eastward to the Lake Plateau region and lose yourself for a week; great fishing, hiking and scrambling the peaks that surround it; there's a wonderful loop that starts at Lake Columbine.
