Injuries, Exploitation and Eating Disorders: The Real Story Behind The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader...
Subscribe to Mamamia (www.mamamia.com.au/subscribe/?)
Before the Netflix documentary America’s Sweethearts, a 7-part series that examines the wild world of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, author and journalist Sarah Hepola created and hosted the Texas Monthly podcast America’s Girls and she has stories that didn’t make it into the Netflix series.
In this wide-ranging conversation with Mia Freedman, Sarah talks about the sexual exploitation, the injuries, the pay gap, the body image issues…and so much more.
Are the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders a harmless piece of beloved American culture? Or are they emblematic of a system and ideal that is harmful for women and girls? Mia and Sarah discuss it all in this episode of No Filter.

How can someone be so utterly deluded? She's still convinced this Jason guy is her soulmate and felt the same "connection" as her even though he clearly doesn't want anything with her, probably because you can see her huge red flags from miles away. At this point it's clear he only replied to her emails out of politeness, so said "soulmate" connection is all in her head and very one-sided. The fact that she actually thinks she's a "pretty logical person", yet apparently believes in fairy tale and rom-com concepts like soulmates🤦‍♀️ DELULU

Australians aren't safer now. Online porn that children can EASILY ACCESS, less households owning registered firearms for self defence & 50% divorce rate minimum. My Mum (now 74) was a "Safety House" zone coordinator & Neighbourhood Watch member. I'm born in 1979. Even the kids with divorced parents had Dads who kept paying the mortgage of their ex-wives & children's home. She was used to seeing them do it when working at Commonwealth Bank. Most "men" these days would phone Roadside Emergency Services if they had a flat tyre! * P.S:- Malcolm would have employed security to mind his wife & Daisy when growing up at home. This is a necessity for upper-class families.

Her dad was a cop. Mother was in utter denial despite being a team manager seeing her daughter 9mths pregnant in her togs, daily. Has incest even been considered? That level of promiscuity typically has its roots in sexual abuse. A cop with an illustrious career, would hate to damage that reputation. Mum has betrayal blindness or willful ignorance at best. I don’t think she was involved but I think she knew and her tears aren’t for Keli or Teagan but rather for herself. All she kept saying was “we knew nothing” over and over. Never about Teagan and where she could be and is she safe, we want our grandchild back etc…. nothing. She knew. Keli could’ve given the name Andrew to her friend as soon as she knew she was pregnancy - knowing then that it was a fictitious person she was creating to cover something far more sinister that the family was in on. Where are her siblings in this story? Their accounts of Keli as a teen and the dynamics in the home.

I'm 40 and never wanted children. I honestly barely even thought about, probably because I never had a serious relationship with a partner. I rarely get anyone asking me about it or making negative comments (maybe other than my mother 😝). It really doesn't bother me if someone asks me if I have children, but I can see how it could upset someone who really wanted kids but couldn't have them. If anyone asks me if I have kids I just say I'm a cat mum 😻 I think there just needs to be less judgement and assumptions around people who don't have children. We don't want people pitying us, or deciding that we're weird or horrible people etc... Its just one life choice like many choices we make in life such as whether we're married, what our job is, where we live etc.... People need to just let others live their life the way they want. I don't see why anyone would care whether I have children or not or make a big deal about it. Not having children just seems perfectly normal to me, I'm just living my life like anyone else. I don't consider it weird or negative in any way.

I have never publicly said this. But I admire this woman’s honesty so much I feel compelled to say this. I am an only child of a gay “father” and a wonderful mother. My father’s parents were some of my biggest heros (very strict old school Baptist older people) and when my father told them he was gay it was a big deal. But I am thankful that I had amazing grandparents (who didn’t approve of his actions- but loved him) and to this day I can say they love my mother (who is the best mama in the whole world) my mama even came to cut my Gigi’s hair when I was 18 ( she had been married to my wonderful stepdad for like 10 years at this point) but it hurts my heart that she thinks her parents never forgave her for that. But I’m happy for her! I wish I had her confidence!

She's an enabler and he's a narcissist. She even admits to him gaslighting her, saying she was imagining things. He will definitely cheat again, and she will definitely allow it. This isn't a beautiful romance, this is a perfect example of narcissistic abuse.

Thanks for posting ! The comment about the lack of rituals in friendship was interesting... but sororities and fraternities come to mind party for that purpose... but there is also so many double (triple!) standards applied (the example given if leave was a good one). You only need to read history, especially military history or histories of struggle like the suffragettes, to understand the power of platonic love. I have personally seen better health outcomes through fraternities. It's a pity that is not valued, and indeed often penalised. Here in Victoria, the government has made changes to law likely to wipe several male fraternities out, yet does see and support the value of a great organization like the Country Womans Association (CWA)... friendship is the engine room of groups like that. It keeps people healthy and often alive.
