Hewing
Hewing an 8" x 8" x 25' purlin for a timber frame in East Montpelier, Vermont. There are easier ways to make round logs square, but none as cheap as this. The log is Eastern White Pine, harvested a few hundred feet from this hewing site in February 2022.

Harvesting timber for the new workshop we're building this summer in East Montpelier, Vermont. We're cutting White Pine, Spruce, and Hemlock for the timber frame. White pine for floors, doors, and siding. Tamarack for an outdoor entryway. Ash, and Cherry for cabinets and trim.

We needed to raise a winter work shelter, but we didn't have access to a crane, so we rigged up a gin pole. A gin pole is a tall pole (traditionally spruce), with a block & tackle lashed to the top, and guy lines so that it can be set upright. It's then used to lift heavy things straight up, which it's able to do because wood is incredibly strong along its length.

We bought the tractor used, and the winch new. Expensive tools, but they've more than paid for themselves. We're amateurs, and just doing this to build our house. White spruce is nice. It has a tendency to twist as it dries, but it's really strong. We're using it for the rafters and joists in our timber frame.

nice job. slash scoring as a 2nd pass is smart, although very rare on youtube hewing vids. this stands in contrast with extensive signs/evidence of slash scoring on a lot of 18XX hewn log houses in the northeast at least. gives a nice finish as far as rough finishes go. thats a crazy nice eastern white pine log man. this spring im trying a longer axe handle to do the scoring... tired of breaking my back (im 6ft tall...)

I've actually struggled with longer handles. I'm 6'1" and I've always had back problems. The shorter handle seems to help. What/where are you hewing?

Any risk of termites when stacking the wood like that? I had a big pile of wood before and some of the lower ones became rotted.

Termites love the part of the wood just beneath the bark, so removing the bark goes a long way. These timbers aren't going to be stacked here for very long, either. Getting the wood up off the ground is really helpful in mitigating rot.
