Luc Brewaeys (Mortsel, 25 augustus 1959 - Antwerpen 18 december 2015) was componist, pianist, dirigent en muziekregisseur bij de VRT.
Brewaeys ontving verschillende compositieprijzen en componeerde in opdracht van meerdere binnen- en buitenlandse orkesten.
Door de technische eigenschappen van het instrument kon Luc Brewaeys in 'Il fiume del tempo passava' (1996) voor accordeon solo een aantal van zijn vertrouwde harmonische elementen - de kwarttonen die hij in zijn spectrale harmonie een wezenlijk bestanddeel zijn - al bij voorbaat niet gebruiken. Voor de rest heeft 'Il fiume del tempo passava...' wel alle vertrouwde Brewaeys-kenmerken: virtuositeit, een levendige oppervlakte met daaronder een eerder statische harmonie en een doelbewust gebruik van een breed gamma van mogelijkheden op het gebied van klankkleuren en speeltechnieken. Het werk vertrekt van één toon (D), die geleidelijk van register en kleur verandert en waaruit dan een steeds sneller weefsel van vingervlugge motieven groeit.
Klankkleur
In de muziek van Luc Brewaeys valt een bijzondere gevoeligheid voor klankkleur op, die doordringt in zowel zijn compositietechniek als in zijn instrumentenkeuzes. Die aandacht voor timbre hangt nauw samen met het Spectralisme, een muzikale stroming die in de jaren 1970 vormgegeven werd door, onder anderen, de Franse componisten Tristan Murail en Gérard Grisey. Het basisprincipe van de spectrale muziek is de fysische analyse van klankkleuren. Naast de grondtoon klinken er voor elke klank heel wat boventonen mee die het specifieke karakter ervan bepalen. We spreken dan over boventoonreeksen. Uit deze boventoonstructuren legt de spectrale componist klankvoorraden aan waarmee hij zijn muziek vormgeeft.

Brewaeys received various composition prizes and has composed for several national and international orchestras.
Due to the technical characteristics of the instrument, Luc Brewaeys could not use a number of his familiar harmonic elements in 'Il fiume del tempo passava' (1996) for accordion solo - the quarter tones which he considers an essential component in his spectral harmony. For the rest, 'Il fiume del tempo passava...' has all the familiar Brewaeys characteristics: virtuosity, a lively surface with a rather static harmony underneath and a deliberate use of a wide range of possibilities in terms of timbres and playing techniques. The work starts from one tone (D), which gradually changes register and colour, and from which an increasingly rapid fabric of dexterous motifs grows.
Timbre
A particular sensitivity to timbre stands out in Luc Brewaeys' music, which permeates both his compositional technique and his choice of instruments. This attention to timbre is closely related to Spectralism, a musical movement shaped in the 1970s by, among others, the French composers Tristan Murail and Gérard Grisey. The basic principle of spectral music is the physical analysis of timbres. Besides the fundamental tone, each sound has many overtones that determine its specific character. We then speak of overtone series. From these overtone structures, the spectral composer creates sound stocks with which he shapes his music.
