    Bruce thought I'd check in. I actually quite enjoyed the first 2.5 parts of the first tune, foot was tapping for the music. I think I could almost play it just from listening now! Not a lot to critique to a good level, well done! Consistency, you have the ability for really good movements and that's where the set got let down. You'll nail it, then miss it the next time through with an embellishment; the first tune is close to being a solid performance. The 2nd tune is improving and the 3rd sounds like a nice wee tune to the set. Other than consistency, follow up on your chanter cut-outs which also leads into drone waving. A bagpipe water manometer can be made at home pretty cheaply, some shops sell pressure gauges as well... they may help with steady blowing. Be proud of the progress, it is steady!

      @@bagpiperbruce You're very welcome! I don't mean to pester or be rude, but I'm genuinely happy to hear about your progress as an adult learner. It's been great following your journey, and I really appreciate you sharing it with us. I think counting your practice hours is such a unique and effective approach. It allows for clear, achievable goals and gives you a valuable perspective on your progress. It's a fantastic idea, and I think more people should consider doing it - especially recording their practice sessions! I've been fortunate to spend over 20 years with the pipes, learning along the entire way. My parents were dedicated to getting me to multiple lessons and band practices each week when I was younger, and I was lucky enough to receive a high school scholarship for pipes. I've played up to Grade 2, became involved in learner programs, and helped tutor a Grade 4 band for a season before I moved with work again. That experience was incredibly valuable, and I probably learned more from it than they did! I’ve had many opportunities to pipe for hire and fill in for band gigs when possible, which has allowed for a different experience. Unfortunately, we don’t have many Grade 1 bands in my country, but I’ve been welcomed to practice with two of them at opposite ends of the country. However, I haven’t had the chance to attend yet, as my career has taken priority over music in recent years. And to be honest, I’m not sure I’d enjoy the pressure these days (or be able) but I'd have loved to give it a crack early as an adult. Keep up the great work! I’m looking forward to hearing more of your progress!

      Well, at this point i build a shed and soundproofed it.. I know thats not possible for a lot of people but it makes it possible for me to play every day for as long as i need to. During the beginning in the first 2 years i did not have my shed yet so played in an appartment and made clear appointments with my neighbours. I played about 30 mins indoors every day and most of them did not complain at all. Some did, but after that i decided to just practice in front of my appartment complex outside when it was not raining. If it was raining i stuck to my practice pipes.

    Very little work to do in the 1st & 2nd measure on their first time through - well done! After that inconsistences on all movements were apparent. One of the difficulties is you can have very clear grips, so when you clip through or can't get that little finger down for a closed touch or it's full length it's really noticeable. Temp got pushed which probably contributed to less consistent movements and non committed embellishments, that's hard to hide on the G1 chanter having a wide hole space to cover. The good thing is you have nailed embellishments, working on consistency and making them stick every time should be a key focus. Be honest with your practice - if you miss it go back and hit it, break it down and build it back up. Play the rhythm again etc don't let a poor embellishment go. Also recognise yourself for when you get them right! You've come a long way and the improvements are clear keep at it! I think dojo has helped alot for you, are you still doing it?

    • @bagpiperbruce
      @bagpiperbruce 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you very much for your mayor feedback! At this moment in time i was doing a quick runtrough. Just to see as it is, i did not focus specifically on embellishments or tempo or steady drones. As you can see im in nice clothing.. i was on a hurry to something christmassy.. So i played in, tuned and started to record, took me 15 min total instead of the regular 50 mins of a video. Im going to take into account the not accepting failed embellishments, thats a good one! Iam still feeling like im a bit overreaching with these kind of tunes but regular tunes have become boring like scotlnad the brave green hills etc.. I think im in some kind of in between level or something.. Im still follwing the dojo but i took the 6 month next grade plan and put about 30 mins a day in to follow that.

    • @adventurousmedic
      @adventurousmedic 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’d agree with your point about 'overreaching' - it’s tricky to find the balance between pushing yourself and not rushing into expanding your repertoire too quickly. Having a mix of competition tunes, personal favourites, and fresh challenges keeps things engaging. I’d probably end up playing hornpipes and reels entirely if it were up to me! It sounds like you’re in that transitional stage between grades where simpler tunes feel uninspiring, but tougher ones still feel like a stretch. It’ll click - your progress so far clearly shows you’re on the right track. If you’re looking to refine further, professional private tuition can make a big difference if you can afford it and have the time to give to it after your next grade plan. It can offer a level of personalised, constructive critique that regular tuition or band practice might not fully provide due to skill, others needs and social restraints. If you can fit it in, it’s definitely worth considering for your development as any piper. Practice isn't always about hours, whilst endurance helps. Targeted shorter practices can often give more refinement... It’s a bit like strength training: consistency and precision with the right targeted exercises can be more effective than sheer volume. Merry Christmas!
