Hello! I’m an American expat living in Australia. After two years living in Tasmania, moving for my marine biology career, I made the move to Melbourne.
I love to chat culture shocks of moving to Australia from America, and different perspectives I have after years of leaving the USA. I love to share my day to day life, while also focusing on coffee culture and travel!

No wakkas and she'll be apples are normal to me, fair dinkum and larikin are old people slang
Lol been in melb for 14 years from los angeles, still can't pronounce melb like a local
bush telly NOPE!-melbourne
You don't understand how super works, it's a part of your PAYG. It's your money you earnt, the only difference is a small % is forced to go into a super account untaxed so you don't become a burden to society when you're too old to work and would normally be able to receive a pension but can't because you were forced to put money into it by the government so the government doesn't have to pay your pension. And you're not allowed to withdraw from it unless you're okay with being taxed 50% on it, in which the government is happy to take but if untouched it's tax free upon retirement, which the government is happy because they wont have to pay you a pension until you spend it all. Over the course of your working life it's expected you should end up with half a million in super at least, and ideally already own a home and car thus 500k should last at least a decade or two depending on how they spend it, at which point you're in your mid 80's and if you haven't died yet you will soon and thus the government avoided paying you a pension and it cost them nothing other than a small portion of tax. Pointing out it's called benefits in USA is pure semantics and it's also not a right, it's a mandate.
All these were common about 30 years ago - older people still use them - you’re young and probably not hanging around older Australians - if you were in my family (my parents are in their 90s) you’d also hear - cobber, stone the crows, crikey, struth and grouse - not to mention Blimey Charlie and bonza beauty
Clementine looks amazing
Yes its normal
More country areas use these terns not so much inner city or suburban areas
It's just the hand brake, it's not an emergency brake??
These all get said but mainly by rural types
Wait do americans not do this??? What the hell guys use your parking brake there's literally no downside
That’s called the park brake over here for that reason. Very few people won’t use it as the primary means of holding the car when it’s parked. If parking on a slope, people will usually put the car in gear as well for some additional security, but the park brake is the first option the vast majority of the time.
lol omg superannuation is not a right! And it’s not in everyone’s best interest. It’s the biggest economic scams and is actually benefitting the government and big corporations on the stock market as opposed to the individual
It is a long way from the old diner experience like in the movies where some agony aunt always gave you coffee refills and you got to eat pancakes and juicy burgers. Seems America has become a third world country full of take out junk food places.
Yes :)
Fair dinkum is so 80s
As an Australian I’ve never heard any of these things before lol.
It’s ok.. you can move back..Tasmania’s won’t complain ..
Good God - don’t come to Britain then - Americans are Captain Sunshine compared to people here 🙈
I love Tassie🌸🫶🏻
My mum says them, but younger generations not so much
Australia is continent.
i live in austalia WHY MELBOURNE WHY
Ive been and Aussie all my life and here’s what I say 1.never heard it 2.never heard it 3.sounds like it could true probably old slang 4.never heard it Edit:I have always lived in Melb and it depends where in the land down under ur
go back to America
Australia's shit. What fucking shit are you on?
Herd them all
And Aussies hate Starbucks.
I often say and hear no wakkas
Fair Dinkum is for old people, mainly men talking to other men. No wukkas is something I use lol
Larrikin (like Larry, larry-kn) & no whuckers yes, the others are older sayings, you'll find old people in the country will probably still use them.
People generally say "no wozzas" where I am (Melbourne metro)
The only fools in Australia that think there titles mean privilege and must be said are those IDIOT race baiting politicians we have
The first two are quite common. The third I never heard of. And the last we can forget about it, cause it's the Aussies way to do things without planning, which sometimes ends up badly.
Don't hear any of these in Bris but I do say No wokkas. I'm the only on that says it snd it became a permanent part of my vernacular against my will thanks to friends using it around me ironically, and now no longer saying it 😅
Be fair though, Melbourne is low key one of the greatest café cities on the planet…
I think Americans don’t realise how much they keep the UK monarchy pumping. In Australia and around the world that whole ‘Established Titles’ malarkey was such a joke, but clearly a lot of Americans felt very ripped off that they weren’t genuine lords for $50! Whatever it means to be a lord. I’ve always thought it explains the medical system a bit too- you want to be able to be better than your neighbor and if you get in trouble to be able to buy your way out of it. For any problem you’ve got a guy. It’s guna be a someone else’s problem because you’ve got the top guy on retainer…
or just the "nod" for a hello
I’ve never heard of the last one but the other 2 are definitely real and are used. They’re both considered old slang, so it’s usually older generations who use them, especially larakin.
yes i do. no wucken furries mate, fair dinkum mate
Only crazy people would want MINCE MEAT cooked anything other than well done.
as an australian, honestly i've never heard any of them before, and everyone else is saying that they did so now im confused 💀
So, welcome, and hope you continue to enjoy the work to live, not live to work, and thin-skinned bastards aside, don't take it too much to heart if you are unfairly criticised. (Those who know matter, those who don't know, don't). Finally, by all means express an opinion, just be prepared to defend it occasionally (keeping in mind thin skinned bastards, ratbags, and red necks, in which case, smile, move on, and ignore...) I lived and worked in Louisville, Ky for 18 months many years ago. People were generally very welcoming, and I am still good friends with many 30+ years later. Yes, there are many similarities, and you are discovering some of the more fundamental differences. Boils down to don't take life or yourself too seriously and try and enjoy life and those around you. Once had a padre sum it up like this : - "Why are you doing that? (A task at 9pm that could have waited till the morning) You going to look back on your death bed and wish you'd done more of that? Didn't think so, now piss off home to your family..." Another way of putting it; "What will you look back on and wish you'd done more of? Then do more of that."
These slangs are old skool 70-80's slang
I wouldnt bother guys australia is little tough for ya when ya so full of ya self its hard to fit in
In 94 you could get a place just like that, really that same day and sometimes not even that long.
Think we can all agree that America is a cesspool.
Used all of those, mainly decades ago
"no wukkas" is short for "no wukkin fories" which if you swao the first letters of "wukkin" and "fories" will show you how it came about ;p And as a lot of otherd are saying, these slang terms are location dependant, so depending on where you are and thr tyoe of aussies you hang out with, you'll hear it more
no wokkas is probably the only one people say
