    I grew up in Miami, FL but have lived in Minnesota since I was 23 and now I noticed that I have basically adopted a Northern Cities vowel shift hybrid accent lol I notice it in my vowels. Like my As become a dipthong in words like "back" but a monothong in words like "lake". Hamster sounds like "byack" and "lake" like "lehk." I also watched a documentary that involves a murder of a girl from Rochester, NY and I noticed how all her friends sounded like women I know here in Minnesota.

      Check out the output/monitor on your DAW .. map the output to maybe windows audio (not sure about Mac) and not the audio interface. Also, it is preferred to have the audio out through the audio interface for best results, either through studio monitors or headphones.

    There are two basic differences from NYC speakers and upstate speakers. One is the hard R sound like motha vs motherrr. The other is the intrusive R as dorg vs dawg for dog. I Iearned the NYC accent is a remnant of a British accent and if you listen to Brits speak you can hear it. "My motha broke the lore" will sound the same from a NYC speaker and from a London speaker.

    • @julienandross
      @julienandross 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i can picture that honestly, sometimes they do sound pretty similar. i think my ears are just more acclimated to NYC cuz of its proximity to me, but yeah there are definitely some similarities between it and a southeastern british accent

    I think swear words are like implicit punctuation. Saying Fuck is like dropping ! into your speech. Or less obvious, I think excessive swearing is like TYPING IN ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME AND GETS ANNOYING. Now..... both !!!! or maybe !?!? or words in ALL CAPS here and there can have their place, but used in excess, can make you be taken less seriously. Another way to look at it is to Spice up conversation and pair up well as you say with jokes. But even with food, you want the right amount to enhance it, if you drown food in excess spice you've made a mockery of cooking and ruined it. However, using it in subtle clever ways greatly enhances it. As for me, I'm a truck driver and swear all day, but to myself out of boredom watching dumb shits in traffic, but I leave that excess cursing behind when I'm out of the cab.

    i like the point you make, and i agree to an extent. it really depends on the people you surround yourself with. if you are around people who swear a lot, swear words do much less. my friends swear a lot, so saying fuck or shit holds little to no weight. i think it really depends on context and people, but overall i definitely agree. i swear a lot and i do notice when clean speech is effective, especially in professional settings. great video. i also absolutely love the snow, winter is the greatest season by a mile.

    • @julienandross
      @julienandross หลายเดือนก่อน

      they definitely arent all bad, it is context dependent and swearing has plenty of use in the right situations. if you remove the habituality of them tho, now you pick and choose when you use them, rather than having them accidentally fly at a time where you didnt want them to. we never speak "perfectly," but we can speak mindfully 😄⛄️❄️ (winter enjoyers stay winnin btw 😎)

    This is excellent, thanks. I'm from Otsego County, which is part of the northern Appalachian region of New York. But my mother was from Germany and my father grew up in the Hudson Valley, so even though I was born in Otsego, my accent was a little different (until I forced it to conform). I became aware of subtle accent shifts by doing that, and one difference is rhythm. In the hills along the southern tier they have a country drawl, a slow staccato, with clipped words, which definitely sounds far more like a northern country drawl than anything I hear in the cities of Syracuse or Utica, etc. Have you traveled into Steuben or Chenango or any of the backwoods locations along the southern tier and noticed the clipped, staccato rhythm of the country people? I'd love to hear your analysis of it someday, thanks. Good job!

    • @julienandross
      @julienandross หลายเดือนก่อน

      i have not spent too much time in the southern tier honestly, ive only ever driven through, but at a church out in a small town by the finger lakes i had a few interactions with people who 100% fit into this catagory of speech! they spoke real slow and just took their time with everything, to a point where it was almost a little frusterating lol, so if they happened to be from the southern tier or had a family that was influenced by that northern appalachian style of speech that cuts up thru PA and southern NY, it would make perfect sense. its definitely nuts how different those parts of the state are from everything else. being from buffalo i cant help but feel the isolation when im out there. if i drive thru a place like nunda i think to myself "wow these people are an hour away from every metro area, and theyre fr just livin all the way out here!" the cultural difference that can exist across the rural to urban boundary is shocking, and its nice to venture out and traverse that gap by meeting and interacting w folks

    • @jeffreyshampnois2471
      @jeffreyshampnois2471 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@julienandross The "drawl" can also be rapid. There's an odd saying that might be local -- "Don't keep your hand on your ass" -- which seems to mean "don't expect something to happen soon (I think). But it's said rapidly, and the beat is staccato, each word emphasized heavily. Except the word "your" can hardly be heard, it blends with "hand" -- yerHAND -- and the words "on your" are blended into "ONyerASS". So it's spoken fast, but it has a clipped rhythm.

    I live in the area and I think you hit it spot on. Now I can't unhear it. I honestly think this is actually a big reason why growing up I had a horrendous time trying to learn how to spell. I just came across this video and as someone who's been living almost one year in México (I decided to do a Master's degree as a B2 level speaker), I can tell you that learning Spanish is no easy process. It's great that you're reading books in Spanish and expanding your vocabulary but, you know, depending on your language learning goals, I see two routes you can take (or can integrate if you so choose). You can learn Spanish as a formal language, as in, being able to speak it at a seemingly high level or, you can master Spanish at the street level. One regret of mine is learning too much of it in a formal educational setting, it kinds sucks because Spanish in school compared to Spanish on the streets is pretty different. There are also different social statuses and classes which can make you come across as a douche depending on how you're speaking and to who. I'd recommend continue listening to music that mimics Spanish in a natural native setting, listen to people irl speaking like this and learn the slang of the country's Spanish that you are interested in! Also, take baby steps when you are having dialogues in Spanish, apply whatever you learned and do it again in the next dialogue!
