Dune Research Presentations 2024-2024-12-05 GEO Seminar at Calvin University
The Department of Geology, Geography, and Environment (calvin.edu/geo) at Calvin University welcomed six student research teams on December 5, 2024 to describe their dune investigations as part of the First-Year Research in Earth Sciences (FYRES) course.
Seminar Summary: Student research teams present the results of their research projects focused on Lake Michigan dunes and Calvin University’s Perseverance Dune. Topics include emerging dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline, threats to a rare dune thistle, ecological succession in a blowout, impacts of building a boardwalk on a dune, vegetation patterns and the effects of trampling in a blowout, and sand fences and rare thistle patterns on a managed dune. The presentations were given in person to an audience in North Hall 078; the event was livestreamed and recorded on Zoom.
