Hello, were these lenticular round shields actually historical? To my knowledge they were only featured in art, no actual archeological finds suggest real use of convex round shields by any european culture, only round shields with a straight/flat profile were used (even in Carolingian Francia, where ironically most of the artwork featuring convex round shields is from).
@@ilikepotatoes1345 there are some rounded metal handles found in allamanni graves. But they could have been bent by the collapse of the grave
@@tailorofsteel2783 It's a shame that there is no real evidence for lenticular/convex shields, it's a really cool looking design. Your's turned out amazing by the way, awesome job man!
@@tailorofsteel2783 If I could also ask while I'm at it (figured someone like you could perhaps know), would flat/straight round shields only be made with the center/boss grip or would there also be ones made with strap grips (while still having a metal boss in the front) in the early medieval period? I'm asking because I'm sort of working on an impression of a frankish cavalryman/proto-knight from late 10th century and I'm sort of indecisive between the two and don't neccesarily have that much knowledge in this field.
@@ilikepotatoes1345 i dont quite know about round shields, but there wehere some Norman style shields like this.

Unless I missed it, I did not notice if you welded the socket?
You didnt miss it. Im not good at forgewelding and didnt want to destroy it
@@tailorofsteel2783 I forge woodworking tools and have problems welding sockets. I have taken to forging the socket separately and forge brazing the blade onto it. You can also forge weld, but I really don't like starting over. I protect the braze in the hardening cycle by wrapping it with a wet rag. The finished line of brass looks decorative. Your spear point is beautiful.
Hi, I came across this video while looking for a way to make a historical aspis, do you think the way to make a lenticular shield would be suitable for making a Greek shield? btw great video
I think so, but with thinner planks I used 6mm but thats to thick.
Nobody likes a boop on the snoot.
Thats why they inventet the Nasal Helm
a lot of work has been done, but there is a complete lack of understanding of the technology for making helmets in a given era. lack of understanding of the geometry, design and use of the helmet. The author needs to read more basic books on armor making.
This was one of my first projects. Im sorry I offended you.
Norf, I would love a link to your video series of hand-making medieval helmets
The hardy c clamps. I've never seen that before. It looks like a key instrument for forging farm tools like shovels, and pitch forks. If I can't find them, I'll need to make them by hand.
You can do it.
Very well done!

Looks amazing friend
Thanks
You're doing a great job ,if I may make a suggestion, a sticker ( an apprentice) would help you greatly, he or she could stick the hammer you're holding for deals and socket making, better control.
Its always easyer together. I would be glad if I had someone helping me
That was awesome!!
Thanks
Cool, you made two spears in one, after forging it was basically a hasta, then after grinding it became the Gammertingen form. I wonder if that's how they got the idea for this spear, by redesigning an old war trophy taken from a Legionnaire. My guess as to how they made the central rib when forging was by repurposing conical swaging dies used for forming arrowhead bases, rather than a lot of grinding (or dedicated swaging dies used expressly for this). Sort of like what you tried with your conical die, but with a second stacked on top to provide a crisp rib rather than precise strikes with a hammer alone. Steel was a premium item back then and I doubt they wanted to grind it into dust when they could've figured out a way to forge it and lose less steel, not to mention the fact that grinding back then was a lot more arduous of a task. I don't blame you for grinding it in though, as a blacksmith myself I shared your anxiety when you were hammering close to that central rib. No telling how many things I've made a bad hit on and decided it didn't need a rib after all lol
Yes thats definitely a possibility. I've actually made a Tool like this for another project but I simply had not made one for this one. So grinding was the way to go for me on this piece.
Great ! i'd like to see the quenching and testing of this spearhead !
Sadly I did not use a hardenable steel for this one, since its Only for Display purposes.
Nice work!
Thank you
I promise you, your English is far better than my German. It's been a long time since I spoke German. That is a great looking spear head! I've thought of trying one for a long time. Once I clear some things from my workbench, maybe I'll give it a shot.
Its a Quick little project for a free evening.
Hey! Nice work! Except it's not a spearhead from the "Middle Ages". Sorry, but you got an iron copy of a cast bronze spearhead. An ancient smith, had to find such a shape of the product, so that (ideally) after forging it should only be sharpened. After all, metal cost a lot of money. I am not belittling your work as a blacksmith, but it would be interesting to see the ancient techniques of making forged items from the Viking Age.
Its a reproduktion of the Gammertingen Spearhead form 570AD. The shape and size are a nearly exact copy. I do not know if the material Was leftover Black or polished but it was definitely possible and not unheard of at the time.
Very good 😅
Thanks

hi, I can make you one, just like you want it, but its not cheap you know.
@@tailorofsteel2783 so what would we be talking in Dollars Not marks Please🤝🏻💥☘️
It depends on what youre planning to use it for. For a rough forged 11" Spearhead without the central rib, ill take about 75$ +Shipping from Germany. if you need a hardened and tempered piece or a good surface Polishing it'l cost a bit more

Great Video Man, I can Understand you well, you sound Nordic? ⚒️💥🔥🤝🏻☘️@@tailorofsteel2783
Agreed, the spear looks great. Makes me want to break out my forge and anvil again and get to hammering. And everyone who speaks English has some kind of an accent. I'm a native speaker of English and I can understand his accent better than I can understand the accent of some other native English speakers. I think most English speaking people sort of accept and even expect that people are going to have accents and make grammatical errors. So for anyone out there who isn't a native speaker and is trying to learn English, don't worry if you get things wrong or have an accent. Very few native English speakers will care and many won't even notice.
