This is not a helpful video. A demo of an effect should show the instrument with and without the effect. Also, why is this DI box so expensive?

Would someone be kind enough to explain just what the level knob does? I just ordered one of these and I'm spending most of my shipment time watching every video on this box ten times over; however, I'm still REALLY confused about that Level knob.
I wondered about this myself so have done some research… The attenuator control on the Acme Audio Motown DI WB-3 unit is used to adjust the input level of the DI signal. It allows you to reduce the level of the incoming signal to prevent distortion or overload in the input stage of the unit. The unit has a fixed input level, so the attenuator control only reduces the input level. Turning the attenuator control clockwise will increase the amount of attenuation, effectively decreasing the input level. Conversely, turning the attenuator control counterclockwise will decrease the amount of attenuation, allowing more of the input signal to pass through and increasing the input level. When set to "DIRECT”, it bypasses the input attenuation circuitry altogether, allowing the full level of the input signal to pass through to the output stage of the unit. This can be useful when working with low-output instruments or when you want to add coloration or saturation to the signal using the transformer and EQ circuits in the unit. When set to “ATTN.” mode, turning the attenuator control fully counterclockwise to "0" will bypass the attenuation circuitry and allow the full level of the input signal to pass through to the output stage of the unit. Turning the attenuator control clockwise from "0" will reduce the input level in a continuous manner, up to a maximum of 10 on the attenuator dial. Hope this helps!

Man, If y'all could lower the price to likee... $800 or $900 each??... I would buy 4. or more. probably more. ...okay, definitely more. But, then I wouldn't have any money left over for microphones. Have you ever considered making a 4 or 8 channel version of this? Simplified schematics, no VU meters, less "bling", but the same sound and the retention of an input & output stage..... then, I know... a few people who would be interested. Seriously. I want a minimum of 4 of these (for drum & bass recordings), but ya' boy ain't got $8k laying around for preamps!! what a shame, I was hoping to have some vibey, gritty analog pre's before I'm 40 and I'm past my "prime" as a musician :/ anyways, fuck me, right!!?! *cue the worlds smallest violin*
I would like to know what microphones were used to go along with this in the recording? And there's the guitar player going directly through that into an interface? How many drum mics and what kind? Please share more info!
For the drums, it looks like a pair of tube mics in a Glyn Johns OH configuration. One over the snare, one by the floor tom, (plus a dedicated kick mic for punch). I can't remember the name of the mics they're using for the overheads, but I've only ever seen them in photos from Abbey Road Studios, or for similarly massive orchestral sessions. I believe they're vintage Neumann tube mics, but you can probably get away with a couple of U67s. They sound great in Glyn Johns. Bass is going directly in, no FX, just good tone. Guitarist has some pedals going on, but nothing crazy. Vocals are using a Gefell large condenser mic. I think its the "CMV 563/M 7S Tube Condenser". Plenty of processing is happening there, but the most audible thing is a reverb send. Which brings me to the point of what I'm saying: .....All of the gear, including the mics they used.. are prohibitively expensive, and they used mostly tube mics wherever microphones were used, so don't get your hopes up unless you've got tens of thousands of dollars to burn on recording "vintage inspired tones". The reason this sounds good is because the song is written and performed much like an old 60's or 70's song, and they are saturating the signals a decent amount. Old music was just that: well written, well performed, and recorded in really nice acoustic spaces with ribbon or tube mics and a decent amount of harmonic saturation on the way in. Mixing only does so much. You have to commit to great performances, great spaces, and a bit of "grime". I wouldn't get caught up on whether they used a console or a computer; they probably used both at some point. I would focus on getting the sounds as tight as possible as FAR away from the recording equipment as possible. Ideally, you just want to capture a performance, drive it a bit, and then walk away. This final mix is a great example of committing to a great mix early on and not relying on post processing or whether or not analog vs digital gear was used! I hope this cleared up your question and pointed you in the direction for further research and exploration into recording!! Cheers yall!!

@asher myers warm and smooth for sure I've been looking for like a month and a half looking at different gear when you come from tape and go digital you realized something didn't make the transfer this will be a great help! thx again

I love talking gear.. btw I don't use any analog outboard gear or tape, so ribbon mics are my go-to for drums and pretty much anything else... except for screaming rock vocals!! warmth aside, I also just love the transient response of ribbons. they sound chunky & phat on drums and guitar amps!

Such low levels. The bass would've sounded so much better had it been turned up to not peak at -20. Gain staging is important! The bass player I use on my sessions has one of these and her tone is outrageously great! Wish you could've used her for this.

Man, I'm not into vintage gear, but this thing sounds so thick, smooth and creamy. I didn't even have to think about those adjectives. While it doesn't sound holographic like I prefer my gear, it just sounds like a nice, brotherly hug to my ear drums. I'm like...not minding ever owning one!
what do you mean by holographic? lol can you tell me about a preamp that sounds holographic? I'm looking at all types of preamps for my U87ai.
WTF is with the photo of Carol Kaye and The Wrecking Crew??? Glad to see your Japanese bass player has LaBella Flats on his P-Bass: that's the Motown sound. Put LaBella Jazz Flats on the Tele and you'll get Joe Messina's sound.

What mic is the lead singer using?
The german tube mic Neumann Gefell CMV 563 with an M7s Capsule. It's a vintage microphone, but there's a modern reissue (propably used in this video as they sound and look the same) from Microtech Gefell, which is still the original company, just running under a different name today.
Wow! Really great demo, great song and playing I spy some Motown EQs in the rack?!! Are those from the day or some sort of reissue as well?
No they bought them from Vintage King a couple of years ago
Yes those are originals and next year hopefully we will have our reissue finished. It's a really complicated design so it is taking a bit to make it come to life. Thanks for watching.

I would have liked to hear a comparison of the audio without the compressor and with the compressor with all the settings. Anyways, that slow setting totally changed the sound of the vocals: you could clearly tell that the vocals where being slammed with compression.
Acme has some of the best demo's on YT. I wish everyone else would make their demos this simple yet revealing. Good Job guys.
Not enough demo, a standard amp vs di comparison would have be nice. At this price point a more detailed demo is lacking.
iT sounds good, i ve got one, but unfortunately when i received it, the selector normaL / slow / fast doesn t work. Always same speed. I see in this video that apply fast setting in an out : is there someting to do to activate / deactivate the speed fonction ? Thanks....
