How I Select the Best San Pedro Cactus Seedlings
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
How I select Seedlings of San Pedro Cactus. The basic plan is to grow cactus seedlings out in the most uniform condtions I can (still working on it) so that when I make initial selections, I am more likely to be picking them for genetic differences vs environmental conditions. I want them to express thier genetic potential. Once they are of a certain size, usually over 1 inch, they start to sho...
Rooting Cactus in Charcoal, An Ongoing Experiment

An ongoing experiment in rooting san pedro cactus in charcoal instead of potting soil mediums. So far, it seems great. I've had a lot of cactus root very fast and not much serious problems with rot or mold. Tobacco on Cactus: San Pedro Meally Bug Annihilation Campaign

I've treated meally bugs on san pedro cactus successfully in the past using tobacco. This time I'm attempting to completely eradicate an infestation using a three pronged approach, fumigation, spraying and watering with tobacco tea. If I'm successful, all cactus I acquire in the future will be either quarantined, treated or both. I did some reasearch on pre-chemical age treatment in greenhouses...
Smokin' Cactus, Fumigating the Greenhouse w/ Tobacco
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
An old school method of fumigating greenhouses using tobacco smoke. Nicotine is a potent insecticide. People used to fumigate greenhouses with tobacco leaf and stems. Tobacco tea insecticide spray and washes can be made by steeping leaves. Add a teaspoon of soap to the tea to help it adhere to plants and spray on. Tobacco water and dust have also been used as an insecticide to apply externally,...
Bro please sell to Canadian shits so annoying trying to buy san pedro only fir it to say (usa only smh)
I’m using 70% alcohol wipes to rub them off
I like spikey bois
Great collection 😎👍🌵 The worst part of having a cactus fall over, is catching it. For me the spines are the coolest part. Lumberjack would be an awesome addition to my garden.
I might have some cuts of spikey stuff vailable soon, including LJ. Or if you live in norcal, I'd like to sell some plants.
Id love some Pala and oceanside!
Have you shared anywhere your substrate mix? It looks beautiful
Nin detail, but it is basically standard potting mix, preferably coco based, with an equal amount of charcoal. I do add other stuff when I have it. coffee grounds, wood ashes, shrimp, fish, or crab meal etc. the charcoal can suck up a lot of nturients in the beginnning, so either charge it up with nutes or use extra fertilizers for the first month or two. the charcoal is a big investment, but they seem to thrive in it and it lasts forever, just like an aggregate. I might talk about it a little here th-cam.com/video/OgSRBl1xJD4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rAbd_HGj5ASaJoQ6 I'll make a video about it and the rationale sometime.
Very cool. Thank you. And may I ask, what size square containers are you using @20:43
@@1neAdam12 the bigger ones are anderson 5x5x8 tree bands. they have no bottom really, but you can put in a piece of netting or sometning, that's what I do.
Do you have a website or a way to purchase something from you
www.teamwachuma.com
I have a san pedro cutting i planted in small decorative ceramic pot for my patio after it slowed down growth from being root bound i pulled it. Out and trimmed the roots just like bonsai growers do now its growing happy again
Lots of stores throw away little plastic trays that are used for delivering soda i believe, i put my square pots in them so they dont tip and so i can carry more than one at once
that is what I prefer too. I have a collection of miscelaneous trays something like that, but I could use a lot more. I"ll see what I can scrounge up. It is much easier.
@@TeamWachuma I got all mine from behind gas stations and Dollar stores and stuff there black Pepsi trays with handles works great
Hey dude I know you're probably crazy busy but if you could make a family tree diagram for some of these crosses I'd really appreciate it I find it fascinating but I get all mixed up
When I start selling cuts of seedlings, I'll write something up about parentage. Otherwise, that probably won't happen lol.
Nice touch with the smoke!
These are awesome
Bro, Mantises suck actually.. Bad creepy vibe 👾 overall. No joke I know they eat pest tho
don't be that way bro, mantis are friendly insects.
Everything ive gotten from Team Wachuma has been healthy and vigorous. Plus inexpensive with a few " Rescues" thrown in. I will only spend what little spare money I have here. Dude is the best.
Thanks for the feedback :)
😍😍😍
Is this a dream? Am i in heaven?
Maybe I am ;)
Who is this independent researcher that finds plants from South America to preserve them and their medicinal knowledge? I am interested in his work.
Ben Kamm of Sacred Succulents. He has a website, but it is pretty bare bones and just about cactus.
No contest, but yeah you are fantastic and full on. Far out!
And wow these are all so healthy. Do know that my guy was great but you are better
That first one I bet makes great medicine. Jewel's Giant
it is spelled Juul's, maybe dutch name, dunno the history on that one, but it is a fantastic specimen of a cactus.
Very healthy very nice perfect fat growth
Sand makes algae grow crazy, i still use it, but right after germination i will topdress with fine akadama or gravel, both keeps the algae down. Or if you want to be sure, use a thin layer of pure akadama on top of the media before sowing, then algae cant grow well without the light. And the cacti can shoot roots trough the akadama after germination. Or just change the sand to pumice or perlite, will also help a lot :) But i find some seedlings like copiapoa grow best in sand based media. (it looks like sandy media to me) ^^ Best regards
I don't use any sand, but it also grows well on the charcoal and vermiculite I use. I'm going to experiment with putting turface on the current flats that just germinated recently. as soon as I think I can get away with it. this problem turned out to be something else besides algae. I had algae too, but this is thicker and not pigmented. someone said it might be the same as the bacteria that holds the soil together in the desert by forming this top crust. I was able to sanitize the soil by heating this time around too, so hoping that just doesn't get started and less of all of it I hope. moss can be a big problem for me too.
@@TeamWachuma Yes keeping the surface dry, with fast drying materials will help a lot. I sterilize all my soil and keep pots inside in incubators, and still get algae, so i think it is something you just have to try and keep down :)
Can I buy some of those
Pro mix w myco-rhysal soil works really well for keeping slime mold algae and trich in check you still may get a little algae but it doesnt get out of control
thanks. I think this turned out to be a bacteria or something that grows and binds all the top surface together. someone said similar to the one that grows on the desert soils in peyote country that holds the soil surface together from eroding. this year I figured out how to sterilize the soil, so I'm going with that. I will probably try to water in early with some kind of soil innoculants. we'll see how that goes.
Can you grow more TBM-A, TPM, Psycho, icaro, sharx blue, althea, Sauage, CSD, Kates bridgessi, ogun and its crosses i would love to see these on the seedling list
I only have a few of those. Most of them would not be things I'd be excited to use in breeding. Kates in my experience is not all it is alleged to be. Does TBM-A actually ever flower? Is that the short or long? I have the short only. For now, all my seed is sourced from other people. I have had crosses with ogun, althea, tpm and sharx before.
@@SkillCult a sharx x Althea would be amazing to see I just got a few more cacti from u I got malo4 x scop and some other ss hybrids and a BBB cross I love the scolivia i got from u and my shulgin is doing aweesome
Id love to see a video about your perspective on breeding and how many generations it takes for stable offspring
I don't think that will happen for cactus. It seems more like apples than like the stable vegetables we think of growing from seed. But that is good. I don't want stable. The more variety seed lots throw the better, because it gives more to choose from and more posibility in breeding. I think you could make hybrids and semi-stabilize them eventually, into something like a land race or new species by constant inbreeding and reselection, but it would probably take squite a few generations and there just still seems to be a lot of variation within species for these guys. It is an intriguing project, but I probably won't live long enough, unless I figure out how to get them to flowering size very fast.
Dude this is so awesome you are liveing my dream
Do you have any idea of the various alkaloid levels of various crosses
Can't really discuss that sort of thing.
@@SkillCult I completely understand, by the way your garden is beautiful dude
Dude where do I buy your apples
Nowhere lol. I am not even a producer and they are just getting out into the world. Eventually some small orchards might start growing and selling a few. otherwise you have to grow them yourself. Up until this year that only happened by grafting them yourself, but I'm working with Cummin's Nursery and my friend Chris Homanics grew some trees that might be for sale this winter. Best follow my other project, @skillcult to find out about all that.
@@TeamWachuma ah man , I figured there was no way to buy them bulk , but jeez it looked delicious, for what ever reason breeding apples is something that never crossed my mind , I love apples and iv made my own crosses of a few plants but for what ever reason I never even considered selective breeding of fruit trees it's fascinating and it seems like you are creating something truly unique
@@drakeweddner that I am! eventually you will be able to grow them. buying the fruit, who knows.
@@TeamWachuma I know you probably chop up a lot of the fruit for the seeds, but if you ever feel like selling some limited supply apple slices even if they are frozen or preserved in honey or something id love to try em
Dude using the same knife to dig in bad soil and new soil transfers mold, algae and other stuff.
I got my cacti in pure silica chrystals. (Catlittersand) I dont know if its sold in other countries. Im Swedish
Perlite?
@@sempi8159 No its more heavy. Looks like white chrystals that goes transparent when its wet. I belive it could be the same as the tiny bags you get in new shoes but the catlitter is in bigger chrystal pieces.
@@lillamy2896 ah interesting! So like glass?
@@sempi8159 I also use it together with LECA to other house plants that are prone to rot
@@sempi8159 Yes. I dont use soil because most of my houseplants is in colder rooms. I got a big house and dont heat them all in winter. Between 10-15 degrees celsius.
Hola como bentilas tu invernadero?
Would love some more talk on biochar. I've made a lot... Most of it I haven't crushed or broken down too much.
I like to crush it down to about corn kernel sized and smaller. Just however it comes out, but with not much larger than that. I don't mind some larger pieces, but I don't think the roots can use them much. I have more stuff on char on my other channel @skillcut I have a playlist on there of biochar related vids.
Just starting my collection. Do you have any ugly cuttings available? Starts? Mids? Pups? Please make me a collection of cuttings… been looking high and low….
Where can I find your seeds?
I don't sell seeds, but I sell seedlings. seedlings are for sale now and on and off at www.teamwachuma.com/store
Nice cuts. I may inquire. Also I find that my thick bull hide gloves never get poked through. Wear a damn mask
When are you going to have seedlings available again???
If you don't already know, I have them now.
thank you from big island ❤ aloha
All I know about tuscon fats is that it is a sister plant of a ritter scop
TMV is what stops me on this one for sure
Cool cat and cacti my dude
I want me one of them variety packs you were talking about real bad! I have been scouring the web for different varieties, and shipping has been crazy!
Good to know. That might happen soon. I have a lot of stuff sitting around, like tips cut off for grafting etc.
@@SkillCult well please let me know when you decide, thanks Hunter Trail!
Nice video👍 Beautiful plants🌵 Those short spine terscheckii look like there crossed with Scopulicola. They don’t normally have short spines.
supposedly south australian short spined tersch, with scop. I think the short spined tersch is probably already a scop x tersch cross. I actually cut that thing and grafted a ton of them. It was hard to do, but now there will be a bunch of them and more propagation material at the end of next year.
Curious as to what you like for fertilizing your cactus, how much, how often. I'm growing in a similar ratio of biocchar, same species.
The easiest and cheapest thing is just pee. It is very high in plant nutrients, including lots of trace minerals, all soluble, it's free and the supply just keeps coming lol. If you run out, you're either dead or will be soon :) Otherwise, either a balanced liquid fert like 5-5-5 or a slightly nitrogen heavy one are fine and easy to use and apply. something like doctor earth brand, made from digested ag and food waste. I like to add kelp extract at least once a year too.
In the growing season as often as every 3 or 4 weeks is good. I think you could do more even with adequate watering, depending on how much you are putting on at a time..
"You can't keep, name and propagate everything" Challenge accepted.
Beautiful project. What grow zone do you live in? Looks like you don't deal with freeze damage.
I have had some freezing damage I'm in 9a. We get hard freezes winter before this last one was pretty rough but I only lost a couple of plants and had to cut off some tips on others. There are definitely significant differences in hardiness that were apparent. A lot of pachs like tammy, huancabamba, tpm and others were more susceptible. Scopish stuff seemed more tolerant
Thanks for your contribution to the cactus community, GO TEAM WACHUMA! Plant more seedlings!
"please start selling ugly cuts" I'm working on it slowly T_T gonna sell a shitfuckton of cereus repandus as well
Hey dude, new grower here. What's the earliest I can start giving my seedlings, plant food? I usually mix liquid All Purpose Miracle Grow Plant Food about 60% of what the directions on the bottle recommends. Is that good?
I wouldn't know about the miracle grow. If cuttings are new, I'd wait til they have a some roots under them. Otherwise, anytime is fine, even young seedlings like food. don't overdo it, but they like quite a bit if you want them to grow fast. I mostly just pee on them and then sometimes other liquid organic ferts and some kelp extract.
@@SkillCult lol! I'll R. Kelly those little cacti! Thanks dude!
Are you a chef?
No, but I do like to cook. sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
