Thanks for this talk conference...
I've never seen such expressive eyes in a painting
this is absurd. one of the most insane things i have ever seen
This man is a viking irl.
Great actor
One of the finest interpretations of Shakespeare's "Hamlet"...the acting, the cinematography...its genuinely remarkable. Work of art!
Awful interviewer. Takes a minute and a half to ask a single question that he inserts himself into, then doesn’t shut up when the guest answers.
A wonderful conversation about a painting that uses everyday language and ideas to describe it. The passion is authentic, unpretentious and relatable. This is the kind of conversation that gets people into art.
This guy was one of my fav in the series so glad to see he has such a depth for him in real life too!!!
Who is the European painter they are referring to? Max Hertwig?
What book is this?
I dislike this kind of art, with every fiber of my being. Nonetheless, students should have the opportunity to study art using the paths of the old masters. However, when artists pompously denigrate and talk down to artists who choose not to follow the traditional path, it makes me extremely angry.
The reverse is a far far far greater problem in the artworld at the moment. Teachers, artists and whole schools of art routinely pompously denigrate and talk down to artists who choose to follow the traditional path, it makes me extremely angry.
@ I have not found this to be the case. The trend nowadays is to denigrate modernism, malign post modernism, screech and yell about the degeneracy and valuelessness of anything that does not look immediately accessible, both visually and conceptually. It’s even now attaining links to political conservatism, traditionalism, and religious fundamentalism. It is as tedious as it is fake.
@ I have never found this to be the case. I think traditionalists just do not like the fact that their genre is just not what interests most at the moment. The impressionists came up against the same attitude from the traditionalists when they first began to exhibit. Attitudes change. Styles change. Tastes change,
@@wordscapes5690 Well actually no, tons of art students have experienced being denigrated and put down for doing traditional art. Also, "their genre is just not what interests most at the moment" that's blatantly untrue. Tons of people are interested in this kind of art, it's just that the mainstream art world ignores and dismisses them and treats them like idiots whose views "don't count".
@@robokill387 if I want to make a quick buck, I churn out what people want (and I assure you, it is not always traditional pictures). If not, I do my own thing, which is sometimes traditional and sometimes not. I was never denigrated for my ability to paint realistically at university. It always came naturally to me… I can draw as fluently as a bull pizzles. Nonetheless, it is a skill that anyone can learn. Creativity and true authenticity, however… that is something that is not so easy to acquire. And no amount of copying the masters will get you there.
I went to art school briefly. I remember asking a teacher how to stretch a large canvas. He replied; 'How do you _feel_ as though you want to do it?' After a couple more inane responses like that, I left, and taught myself by copying. I had a 50 yr successful career, but none of my friends who stayed at art school ever did, interestingly.
It’s pitiful trying to force your daddy, Nerdrum, into a conversation with Rambrandt. Never going to happen, kitsch cucks.
It’d be useful to reference other figurative painting movements/artists like Magritte and Balthus and Kehinde Wiley and Jeff Koon’s kitsch irony. Also as timeless or “outside of time” as Nerdrum’s work is, there are definite Symbolist and Surrealist aspects to his works.
do you paint by candle light or LED? "LED..." ding! Kant.
Definitely Kitsch person
honestly same here! i didn't even know that i agreed with kitsch philosophy
I was a kid when I saw this film first time in Russia and this scene haunted me for many years. Another scene I couldn't forget was when Boris played piano when the bombs were hitting the building.
Thank you for asking these questions. Will there be any more TRAC events upcoming? I'm asking from the year 2023. Haha. I would love to travel to the next one.
If I were in her place I’d take a photo of the crime scene in the studio, maybe even paint running blood steams from the opening in the canvas. Create a story, put that other teacher in the spotlight as a suspect. Display the painting and the scissors as an installation. Maybe even add another layer and create an opportunity for a dialogue with the viewer. Oh my, I remember I was a pain in the neck for my university professors. It was a love hate relationship for sure, but 20 years after we’re on good terms and have fond memories of the past. It wasn’t boring 😂
Wow such a powerful ending.
bro snitched on himself
Carl comes off as a massive prick.
oh.. the futile self-importance of art academics... figuring it all out for the rest of us. How do artists ever get anything done without your help?
So... did she ever discover who did it?
It’s a hot mess!!😂
Good story, but let us see the painting!
this is art
So what is so disturbing about initiation?
who are you? idk! so KITSCH lol
South African Journal of Art History: The In-group and out- group dynamics of Odd Nerdrum positioning of Kitsch as a reflection of Situateness in Contemporary Art - by Willem Venter, 2018 Kitsch Movement = Social Identity Theory (social identity theory, in social psychology, the study of the interplay between personal and social identities. Social identity theory aims to specify and predict the circumstances under which individuals think of themselves as individuals or as group members. The theory also considers the consequences of personal and social identities for individual perceptions and group behaviour. - Britannica) Jacques Ranciere - Resistance to Oppression - Dissensus - heirarchy in politics of art and aesthetics. - distribution of the senses - the police (the critics, teachers, artists, dealers who deem themselves in the know) Clement Greenberg - 1939 Essay - Avant-Garde and Kitsch Kitsch - term first used in 1860s by artists and art dealers in Munich. Meta-Modernism = beyond modernist and post modernist thought Kitsch needs to be re-evaluated specifically as something within itself, as opposed to being defined by what it is not. - marginalizing representational art as "the other" Modernism - What art is and what the purpose of art is - different criteria 15:00 Repositioning Kitsch: Nerdrum & kitsch movement - Figurative Baroque style - does not attempt to innovate High Kitsch vs. Low Kitsch 18:00 22:27 Artwork created in Modernist time certain practices or actions within society are set as 'Norm' by what Ranciere calls "the police". In time, these Norms become so intrenched that they become "the rule". Let us consider a possibe application of these ideas by Ranciere. Allow me to link Modernist thought to the phrase "the distribution of the sensible", we can easily see how certain beliefs regarding the creation of art within the modernist paradigm have become so institutionalized that they have developed from being "the norm" to being "the rule". "The police" could then be argued to be the art critics, art curators, art teachers, artists and other so called knowledgeable experts who place avant-garde art not only at the center of art creation, but also at the hierarchical top dismissing and marginalising that which does not follow the ideas of "the sensible". Ranciere explains: that in a situation where illegitimate power used to marginalize those who do not fit "the norm" a resistance will form out of this marginalized group. This resistance occurs when the police is opposed by politics, specifically in the arch which questions the distribution of the sensible, a process that leads to the re-distribution of the sensible. This resistance and consequent redistribution of the sensible Ranciere calls "The Census", he argues that will "the census" - which delivers a redistribution of the sensible - can only take place through art that forms part of the aesthetic regime as defined and taught by himself" The predominance of Modernist ideas towering over Traditional Representational art has repeatedly been lamented and not only defined as unjust but also unsustainable. If the contemporary arts sphere is "the police" unjustly propagating modernist ideas as the "distribution of the sensible", then "the Census", according to Ranciere needs to take place. This "the census" driven by politics, should then question and oppose the police's "distribution of the sensible" in such a way tgat a redistribution of the sensible is brought about. 24:30 Nerdrum's manifesto on Kitsch art
He who broke it bought it. That is the most disgusting thing you can do to an artist. Whatever that person sews they shall also reap. That is a law. Yes no person should touch art that doesn't belong to them. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Good for you repairing and finishing your work. They say that if a painting makes you feel something it is great art. That person really felt something deeply. Take it as a compliment. Maybe they were jealous.

Wow...
This whole set and the two men talking could have easily formed a Repin painting. Theor faces hair and clothes are very expressive.
ha! indeed
I clicked on this in preference above other videos because I thought the guy in the thumbnail might be the one who modeled for Ivan the Terrible in that painting 😂😮
Powerful imagery. Amazing movie
deceiving! Does not adhere to Aristotle ¨Poetics¨ ¨either by art or faculty ¨ . But nevertheless, this quasi sectarian Questionaire has its merits as long as we detach from the source. Be honest and you will OnLY get Odd as an accomplished visual voice predicating here. Zilch of Odds Students has managed to equal Odd. The students of Odd must be very sloppy copyists ?! But Odd, is himself an eccentric - there's nothing(!) of Titian, zero Rennaisance or Baroque or Roccoco and only Rembrandt as technical guide which only technically and ¨simply¨ is appropriated but not assimilated. Odd is quite good, but none of his pupils are! That Odd sect has a lot to say which I deem worthy and fun to think about, but if there's a pupil of Odd's and some Kantian Renegade, I would say... either, or. Besides, nothing points to Odd - along the lines of these 12 Questions - being anything other then a Kantian.
This is such an incredibly informative interview/survey with experts. Very fascinating!
I remember that for one who continues to strive, there shall be redemption.
Can we say that the emergence of kitsch as a means of expressing anger, disappointment, freedom of imagination
This film, and I Am Cuba are magnificent.
No caption brother
Great scene. But this is not the ending scene.
Genius art
