Garlic Planting - Clove Soak & Treatment -
In this video we'll provide a detailed overview of the products we use to soak and treat our garlic cloves prior to planting. Used as protective measures to protect against bulb/wheat mites & bacterial disease and to protect an extra boost of fertility to stimulate quick root growth in the fall along with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi for healthy root growth and enhanced nutrient exchange throughout the growing season.
If you are struggling to control mites in your garlic we strongly recommend that you DO NOT USE straw or other grain crop mulches. Instead use chopped leaves or do not mulch at all. Additionally if you are planting cloves that have obvious signs of mite damage its critical that you use a miticide (Cinnerate is OMRI approved miticide) or Neem Oil to kill mites/eggs prior to planting. Alcohol & sanitizing dips, in our experience, have proven to be ineffective against GOOD control of mites in garlic.

Oxidate: Oxidate is often available significantly cheaper if you can find a local source. Due to the pandemic supply has been inconsistent.

Tips for Harvesting and using Garlic Scapes
มุมมอง 57K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Garlic Scapes are a fantastic early season bonus for those that grow hardneck varieties of garlic. Depending on variety and you location they typically occur 3-5 weeks before you would typically harvest bulbs and signal that the garlic plant has finished the leaf growth phase of growth and will not focus its efforts on bulb development. It is critically important to remove the scape so that all...

    Thank you very much for the video. Wish I was able to order some garlic from your farm. I am in Canada and unfortunately can not order garlic from the US. For harvesting, I count the number of leaves on each variety and harvest once 50 to 60% of the leaves have turned brown. I have not been having issues with this method but to be safer and for longer storage, you can stick with 50%. Wishing everyone a healthy and wonderful garlic harvest. ❤ from 🇨🇦

    Thanks for sharing. Back yard gardener in Iowa, but your process has applications for us. I have a question for you. My wife wants to only plant cloves from bulbs with 6 cloves, since that's the ideal count for the Korean Red that we grow. Does it really matter? We have some large bulbs with fat cloves @ 7 or 8 per bulb. I would like to use them for planting. BTW, 'large' for this variety is a bulb 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter. At least that's what we've got. I'm happy with it...

    Very good but one of the most important parts of understanding scapes is which section of the scape to use in eating. An inexperienced grower may use the entire scape which is way too woody. Of course the woody parts of the scape can be used to flavor stocks and soups like bay leaves and discarded latter. But neglecting to tell a total neophyte making soup or dishes with bay leaves to discard or not consume the bay leaf.

    wow, wish I had found this video last fall. I just had a horrible learning experience in losing half of my hardneck garlic crop. I planted 2 varieties that did well in the past (music and montana), but this year, the entire montana variety was lost to some kind of bulb rot...always at the root end. Suspect some kind of fungal rot, but don't know for sure. thankfully, the music variety all made it. I will for sure, be doing some kind of bulb/clove presoak to try and prevent this from happening again. thx for posting your wisdom....never too late.

      I would not fertilize with chicken manure directly before planting, its going to be much too high in Nitrogen, I would fertilize with it in spring, prior to planting, and sow a crop of buckwheat into it and then incorporate in late summer prior to planting garlic. While garlic enjoys N it has a tendency to do some funky things with excess N.

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garlic in general does not like to have its roots disturbed. Transplanting at anytime is not really a great option but if you have too it’s better to do so when the plant is very young. If more than 4-5 leaves it’s going to set the plant way back. We’ve done some spring planting experiments where we transplanted from cell trays that were about 5 weeks old vs direct seeding cloves and the direct seeded cloves in every variety outperformed the transplants.

    Can plants that have leaf miner larvae but good bulb formation still be cured?

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. In our experience we’ve never seen ALM in the bulb, it always seems to stop in the stem at the soil line. We believe this is due to ideal temps for ALM. Depending on severe the infestation will determine the impact to bulb size, up to and including lose of plant/bulb if the infestation is high enough to cause the plants to lodge (fall over) early in the season prior to scaping in hardnecks. When ALM first appeared in our area we would see one or two in a plant and there was no noticeable difference in yield. In year 3 or 4 it became very apparent.

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s also important to understand the life cycle of ALM. There is a 2nd adult flight every year that occurs in late summer/fall so the larvae/pupae that are found from spring flight in your harvested crop that is curing will hatch long before it’s time to plant in the fall. This is also the reason there is little/no concern about transfer via seed stock.

    Thank you for your informative videos! I’m in NJ and have a small home garden. I’m excited to have planted garlic on October 25th for the first time. It is now early June’s and I have noticed yellowing on the tips, the first few inches of the tops, of my garlic plants. Yesterday I decided to give them soluble fertilizer of 24-8-16 with a little fish fertilizer. I thought they might need nitrogen. I did side dress them in April and planted them with compost and fertilizer . I see I now have scapes on the hard neck varieties and as per your wonderful information I am going to harvest them and learn to make wonderful things with them. My concern is have I done damage by fertilizing at this late date? Did I do the wrong thing? They don’t seem ready to harvest as I only have maybe one brown leaf at the bottom. The yellowing and browning is at the top. I hope I haven’t damaged my desire for having wonderful garlic bulbs. Please inform? Thank you!

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karen, yellow tips in spring/early summer is typically caused frost/freeze damage on the tips of leaves. Garlic starts growing well before spring frosts end and those early leaves/tips pay the price. The cell walls get damaged from the freezing and when temps warm up and it gets hot the tips dry down. This spring was especially bad due to the unseasonably warm temps in March and April and then a return to cold multiple times. If you look at the pictures on our Facebook page you’ll see a field full of yellow tips. That’s the cause. As far as the fertilizer you applied. Really not ideal for two reasons: 1) way to late in season to apply fertilizer. You should stop fertilizing about 2 weeks prior to scaping. In your location May 15th is a good rule of thumb unless you are in Northern NJ than move to May 22nd. 2). Fertilizer that you used is WAY to high in Nitrogen IMO. In well prepared/composted beds I would be reluctant to use anything higher than 10.x.x. In fact we use 5/3/4 in fall and fertilizer in spring with fish emulsion 3.3.03. What’s going to happen? It’s going to delay your harvest. Plant is going to want to keep growing instead of forming bulb. It could also cause the plant to start “Witches brooming” which is when it grows extra leaves (actually elongated clove wrappers). Nothing you can do now other than wait and see.

    • @thegarlicgrower1443
      @thegarlicgrower1443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very useful question and response. I'm in NJ, same question about yellowing tips, and same mistake with fertilizing, high nitrogen and too late! Oh, well. I guess we'll see what happens! My garlic was going great, and over the past few weeks it has been looking a bit yellow and wilty (it has really been HOT), but still overall seems healthy. Because the yellow tips were worrying me, I fertilized them with calcium nitrate 8 days ago. Apparently, a big mistake. I have scapes on some varieties, and will soon have more, so at least that's going to be great! It's only my 2nd time growing garlic, and as with all gardening, it's always a learning process. Thank you, The Garlic Grower, for your video and detailed advice!

      It really depends on what kind of fertility you started with, but yes, generally two applications of something like 4-2-4 or 5-3-4 is good. You need to remove the hay first and scratch the fertilizer into the soil for best results. I’d apply some in the next 10 days and again the 3rd or 4th week of May. @@markizanochi65 Do you fertilize with organics? I like Neptune Harvest Kelp Meal 1-0-2 in the Fall. Granulated and 1 tsp under each bulb. Sounds labor intensive if you have 100+ plants going. I only have ~30 Rosé de Lautrec plants.
