Do you think they’d handle down tuning well? I have a 28.6 scale 4 string I want to do drop A and drop G
Is there any benefits of long scale when it comes to fretless?
Awesome!
Sound better.
Really heard a difference in the mid range and they seemed to have more output. How old were the regular strings and what gauge and material type were you using for the shorties?
excellently played, very melodic tune on a gem of a bass
Thank you!!! I do kinda wish I bought it!
Great video
These sounds great! Might have to get some in!
They certainly do, it's so hard to explain in a video, but its the feel that makes them really special
@@CalMakesNoise i’ll have a word with Neil and get some in my next order! Thanks man
really interesting design! I like the simplicity of the switches, yet the flexibility of three pickups. I'm not an "in between sounds" guy, I use my blend mainly to choose my neck pu, bridge pu or both. What about potential phase issues if using three single coils? And I guess there is no "classic J bass both pickups" sound in there due to the positions, right?
I'd like to try the Hex Core Steel for my Status Graphite Headless Bass. Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
I discovered Alpher today and was totally impressed by those incredible pieces of art! I went to their website to configure my dream bass, just for fun, and what I came up with is almost exactly what you've got here! Yes, the Mako Prime V2 with 3 pickups and 5 strings in a worn color, that's what I'd go for! Just a different color and different types of wood (or maybe not?). Thanks a lot for the demo, this sounds so killer! Also awesome playing! Now I have a new dream bass!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you found them! I love mine.
That's some good stuff man👍
Such an addictive bass!
Magnifique 👏👏
Thank you!
Great video!
Thank you!!!
Beautiful bass, beautiful playing!! Best regards from Argentina!
Thank you!!! That made my day!
@@CalMakesNoise Glad to hear that!
Wow! What a great bass and demo piece.
I've got this bass on loan atm and, whilst I'm no fretless player, it's incredible!
It's a delight! I'm sure you'll get a great sound out of it!
It does sound fantastic!
€3k? Wow!
All I know is it's one of the best fretless basses I ever heard. I had to check midway through the sound demo to count the strings on it, cuz the E was so low, I thought this was a 5 string I missed counting. They are way out of my price range, but a really great sounding Bass.
The short scale definitely adds a little extra fatness to the E! The whole bass is so resonant too that the open strings just sing!
What is the retro looking bass on the floor behind you?
That is a Pheral Hammerhead!
Thank you
Looks and sounds fabulous And great playing Cal
Thanks dude!!! Hope youre well
@Cal Williams all good thanks, keep on doing what your doing butty ✌️😎
Great to see you back on TH-cam Cal! Tasty playing, concise description, tight editing, love it!! Beautiful sounding bass too.
Awesome!!!
Amazing sound and tone on both. Excellent basses!!🔥🔥🙌🏼👏🏼
What a KILLER looking AND sounding bass. NAILS the 1970's.
Great video as always!!! Would love to see a rundown of what gear you take to gigs / sessions 👍
Thank you! That's an awesome idea! Keep your eyes peeled!
She's sounds Magic Mate. Beastie of a Bass
Thanks dude!!
Really fat Flatwounds on this bass, right?
Correct!! They suit this bass beautifully!
If you have a chance - please do some fretless demos. Thank you.
any plans on flatwound or tapewound strings from Newtone ? Nylon tape ?
Great playing Cal! What kind of strings are on these for the demo? I just picked one up second hand and am debating on what to replace them with.
Hey! Thank you! I believe they had Dunlop Superbrights on for this, all Alphers ship with those. They sound excellent with flat wounds on too!
@@CalMakesNoise thanks man! Will give those a shot to start. I see DR makes short scale high beams too and may give those a shot later down the road.
Nice work!
The Cobia sounds like a very good J bass to me. Excellent demo.
Thank you!
I really wish you didn't have the drums playing. I can't hear any of the nuances of the strings. Also wish you played with a pick as well. Other than that nice video.
I agree I can't tell with the drums and would like to hear some slap
You need drums to hear how they'd sound in a band, it's ok just having bass on its own but the real test to know if they're great is to hear them in a band
@@robdelabassist Just because you only need this example doesn't mean it's all everyone needs. When you're in as many bands and work as much as I do, you know how to test your equipment the way you like to test it. Thanks for the advice, but we don't need it.
@@robdelabassist It's better to hear an instrument raw, because I wouldn't necessarily choose to mix the same way as other people. I might hear various subtleties that I might want emphasize, and in order to hear those subtleties, I need to hear the instrument by itself.
@@lennyjg8968 whatever
Great tones on both, great playing too!! Nice work.
The Mako sounds much better to me ... but to be fair: I’m absolutely not into Nordstrand PU sound...
I think the Mako is my favourite! Just got a punch that I love!
Ace, Cal!! Great video.
Great comparison. Good info video. Now...important is if they all come TAPERED, and especially low B's. I have a beef with all tapered strings as well as the esoteric open core strings by other brands. As well as silk wrappings on ends. Todays modern bridges renders the "final" gauge of a tapered strings too long into the speaking length of the strings, and there's no means to retract the ball end further back, or move the saddle as you jinx intonation then. So are they tapered or not? Or, really, are the lowest strings tapered?
Just placed an order with the custom string configurator on their website - you can specify whether you want a taper or not, for each string individually. Not sure about their stock sets.
super description of the options..I'm working through them right now!
Never owned a short scale but it seems like its like this. A P bass with flats brings the fundamental. A short scale brings that and takes it to another level. The tone is so much fatter and hits a lot harder.
Great video mate! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks dude!
Really great video, thank you for putting it together. I've used Newtones myself for a very long time, they're bloody marvellous strings!
Excellent stuff Cal. Looking and sounding great!
Legend, Thank you brobeans, much more to come! x
How much is the Bass?
I love it
Fabulous thing isn't it?!
It is an epic bass. Played it, and I've got my own V2 variant of that with Nordstrand PJ blades
Ooohh would be nice to hear it with the blades!
looks great, a little pricey
That's some serious Bass Face you got going on there ;)
Hahaha, thank you!
