Thanks for the info about the Buescher horns, it makes me appreciate my 1949 Big B tenor a lot more!
i have a Leblanc harmon mute and it feels great!
Interesting video! The venting issues and setting proper key heights must be tough for a repairman. Cool possibility’s though.
we're so glad you enjoyed it!! the Model 100 is truly something. from jake: "because of its construction, it came with an entire extra manual for setup (and repair)! makes for interesting speculation about where the design could have been further refined, if given the chance." thanks for watching!!
which sounds better? Buescher 400 or a CONN 10M? and what about Play comfort between this two?
from jake: "each horn has different responses to sound concepts. they are truly unique, and it's worth trying out both to see which you like more, and fits you better! good luck on the search!" 🤓 thanks for watching!!
Buescher is my favorite vintage brand across all the voices. I have a true tone, alto, soprano and bass sax, a big b bari thay was a school horn that I found in a dumpster and with tlc still plays and plan on getting a tenor soon.
that's lovely! thanks for sharing. glad to hear it!
I have a gorgeous 1933 Conn transitional 6m. My search for my alto sax soulmate (which included Yamaha purple logo, Yanagisawa 9933, Martin Committee III and Selmer Mk VI) is over. To paraphrase Lester Young; "This bitch is for me".
as jake would like to say, "when you know, you know!"
you look a lot alike Sal Nistico lol
jake's favorite look-a-like! 😂
Sounds great
we're glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching!!
Add Marshal Royal from Count Basie's Band as a lifelong 6m player. I've also seen photos of Lou Donaldson playing a 6m.
great additions!! thanks for watching and sharing :)
Is this the "naked Lady" model? My friend has a 10M alto saxophone with a 3-digit serial number, but it's not the "naked Lady" model. He wants to trade it for my Buffet 18-20 tenor saxophone.
hello! yes, this is the "Naked Lady" model. if you'd like to send some photos of the saxophone in question to "hexachordx@gmail.com", we will pass them along to jake to assist you further! thank you for watching!
Does it olay???? 5:15 5:15
not yet, but soon! 🤓
Love your videos and….. your tone! 😂 beautiful sound man!
big thanks from jake! we're so glad you enjoyed it :)
this is really nice thank you... i
we're so glad you enjoyed it! stay tuned for more!
AWESOME BRO! WHAT MP are you on?
jake is using the Link that was on the horn when borrowed... we believe it's a 5*! thanks for watching! we're glad you enjoyed the video :)
You get a nice sound on that 5 star link. I'm on a 8 link which is too troublesom to play
from jake: "larger mouthpiece openings often get in the way of finding the balanced sound between you and your horn... plenty of projection comes from the instrument itself, to which softer tones can speak louder than others!" thanks for watching... we hope you find the right setup soon!
Very cool!
Mpc brilhart ebolin?
on this video, it likely is!
Insane that you got one in such mint condition! The Big B is my first professional horn too and I love it!
enjoy every day with it! it's stories live on with you now :)
So sick!! Keep saxing it up buddy. Can’t wait t hear you play it :)
you got a deal! 😇
Interested in seeing some high-resolution photos taken for posterity!
first thing on our list!
It is too bad that that you dont show much of the instrument despite moving it about in your hands.
... leaves something to be excited for in the follow-up video! thanks for watching 👍
Thank you for this very interesting article! I'm excited to see what will follow.
thank you for watching! we are very excited too. :)
Absolutely incredible that this still exists.
we truly think so too. :)
I think the forked e flat was designed for playing in keys that you won't play often if your native key is E flat or B flat, I find it more useful on my C Melody sax
from jake: "a very interesting thought! I can see the extended uses shining on the C-saxophones, but it fit the nature of this Aristocrat so nicely... stay tuned for something soon, I think you'll enjoy what's to come!" thanks for watching! :)
A wonderful demonstration of a classic old instrument! Love your sound and inflections. I have a Buescher 400 Bari.
thank you for watching!! we'll pass this along to Jake. more saxocology news coming soon! stay tuned :)
SAX TENOR CONN 10M É MÁQUINA !!!!! PÔR ISTO QUE A SELMER PÁRIS COMPROU A CONN USA . PARA EVITAR A CONCORRÊNCIA !!!!!
is that a Master Link?
from jake: "it is an early Tone Master - serial number T87." thanks for watching!
you sound great and you make the instrument sound great! i play C melodies and C sopranos exclusively, and i totally agree with what you said about the 'non-existent weight' of tradition with this instrument. thanks!
we're thrilled you enjoyed the video! thanks for watching!
Hello is this sax for sale?
hello! no, this saxophone is not currently for sale... it is part of jake's personal collection. thanks for watching!
I own a busher alto and so impressed with how warm the tone is despite how light the sax is. But I also own a Martin alto that would love to get some work on anyone u can suggest. ?
i'm afraid we can't give any direct suggestions for repairs, but we are thrilled to hear about the saxophones in your collection! thanks for watching and sharing!
Hey 1st time listening your channel and I promise it won't be my last. Do u out a sax shop that make repairs?? Where u located?? Thank once again
Love it. Do the other brands make a C-Melody Saxophone?
thank you for watching! from jake: "yes. majority of manufacturers (before the 1930s/40s) had C saxophones in their production lineups. the American companies were the largest proponents of the instrument, however other companies (Europe) made them as well!"
The tone is beautiful, but I suspect it's 90% player and 10% horn.....
we're sure this will bring a smile to jake. thanks for watching!
I just bought its sibling, number 334,234! I can't wait for it to arrive!
wonderful 🤩 where did you get the tshrit from?
its official #saxocology merchandise! - and will be available on our channel soon :)
@@hexachord I was going to ask the very same question. I'm a Conn man (so to speak). I own both a 6M and 10M, and I dig the shirt, too. Can't wait until it's available!
spread the news, and help grow the channel! we can't wait to have it available, either!
a few other 6M players at various times were Johnny Hodges, Art Pepper, Boots Mussulli, Charles McPherson, Marshal Royal, Willie Smith, Tab (no relation) Smith...
Please,What mouthpiece did you use on this video?
we believe it's an Otto Link Tone Edge! thanks for watching!
Great informative video! It would be nice to have a wider shot next time so that we can see both hands on the sax. That way, we can see how and when you are using the alternate G#. Also, we would be able to see how to play the same phrase with and without the alternate G#. As it stands, you did a good job explaining the functionality.
thanks for the feedback! we'll pass this along and hope to hear from you again!
Your voicing really brings the machine to life. Just picked up a C Melody and overhauling it for my son's collection. Good job.
A qualification about Snap-In pads...Yes, they were proof of concept for resonators in saxophones. And they greatly simplify a single-pad repair in the field. But you DO have to seat and probably also shim that pad! Doing a whole horn this way guarantees frustration. I tried it. $150 and a lot of time and stick shellac later, my tech had it singing.
H.N. White (dba King) doesn't seem to have made a lot of stencil horns beside their own Cleveland brand. They used shallow conical, clarinet style keycups, which might have betrayed the horns' origins too easily. OTOH Martin used beveled toneholes on their stencil saxes, just as on the brand name. But they're harder to spot at a glance.
It's tempting to call Bueschers a "classical" horn. It's part of the reason jazz players steer clear of them. Another reason is lack of name cachet - Buescher shared directors with Conn for years, and Conn got almost all the endorsement deals until Selmer started taking over the pro market. But there really wasn't a classical saxophone teaching/recital tradition in the US till it originated around Cecil Leeson in the 30s. (He played Martins, btw.) We got Sigurd Rascher as an emigré during WW2, and Larry Teal began teaching on Selmers after the war. However, there was a _pre_-classical precedent. Gus Buescher modeled his 1888 Conn on an Adolphe Sax alto whose timbre he liked. And he kept that horn, and modeled his saxes on it when he began his own company. He felt strongly enough about it to appear with it in a short film in 1924. It was a 1928 True-Tone that Rascher chose back in Germany, learning somewhere along the way that the horn and mouthpiece were inspired by Sax. In 1933 he replaced it with a New Aristocrat, which he played till retirement. This is the one sax _least_ associated with jazz (a shame - they're incredible instruments).
I've been told - mostly by old New York players - that you can't really get around on a 10M. I think they meant with scales, arpeggios, and a metronome, rather than just blowin'.
Great tone. Joel
thanks, joel! we're glad you enjoyed the video.
Lovely tone..both 'Sax-sound' & 'C Melody 'Sound....What year is this sax?
thank you for watching! to answer your question, this 8M is from 1921 -- serial number 73142.
süpersiniz çok beğendim
Got the same year 10m beautiful sound
great horns!
I need help identifying my childhood Tenor. It has a T and an L(low). Its number is a M263xxx. It looks and sounds like this one. Could you help?
that sounds like it's a 10M! if you'd like to send us a photo, we'd be happy to take a look!
