One Man's One Man Band: Funky Experiment

Drums came first. I then noodled on the guitar until I found something that fit. Bass came third. With those three, it still didn't sound quite right, so I threw in some organ from the B9. It's rough in a lot of parts, but my philosophy is to just finish and then make the next one better.

One Man's One Man Band: Experiment
มุมมอง 732 ปีที่แล้ว
Just a little experiment. Electric guitars were recorded through a Blues Jr. (left) and a Vox AC-15 (with Celestion Blue) (right). Each amp was miced with a Sennheiser e906 and sent to the DAW via a Focusrite Clarett 8 Pre USB interface. The drums were from a Roland TD-30. The bass was direct via a head. The audio was mixed in Reaper. All video was recorded on an iPhone 12 and edited in Premier...
Epiphone Wildkat Pickup Covers: Metal vs. Plastic

Does changing the pickup covers on an Epiphone Wildkat from metal to plastic make a difference? I explore that question in this video. Featured in this video is the Jumblestomp Continuum, my new favorite overdrive. These are built in Chicago, and they ship worldwide. Check them out! www.jumblestomp.com

I actually aimed for a stock pearl wildkat aiming for a nice mellow p90 neck pickup for jazz and it's feral meow for blues moving away from my normal goto of jaguar that's meant to strangle switch in bright single bridge. Anyone playing jazz with the kats???
A small capacitor in parallel like nF value will also continue to sculpt the frequency. It also acts like a resistor and creates treble bleed.
Found out I got a hollow wildkat as well. nice vid
I de-farted my Epiphone Wildkat Studio semi-hollow ( no center block under pups making it lighter than the Bigsby model). One volume, one tone, 3 way switch. Hipshot Staggered Locking tuners, Gotoh bridge, Wound 2 Alnico vintage pups. The original P90 were way too hot for my purpose. 🎯
This is so cool! Nice video with quick comparisson I would've liked to hear the combination of both Kinman and Duncan too But adding the jumpers directly to the guitar is clever, i think i'll try it myself
Nice explanation, mate. Now I'm very confident I can do that mod on my guitar (Duncan TB is easy enough and give the best result for my ears). Now I just need to know how it actually sounds, because I'm hearing your pick on the strings more than the actual sound of the guitar. Maybe line recording could solve it? (also, why most of the best videos out there, with easy to understand info and well explained, usually has the worst sound capture/recording?)
@@blackpanther256, yeah, it’s so hard to make videos at all, but getting perfect sound and lighting adds orders of magnitude to the complexity. I’m just glad my son didn’t drop the camera! 😅
Great Video. I love the Dogars on my Gibson made Casino more with the plastic Covers than my MIC Casino. There was a guy who did a strip down of those Chrome MIC pickups. All decent parts used in the build of those that you would find on top end pickups, even down to the magnets and wire. But they sound awful muddy. The covers were replaced to pure Nickle ones. The guitar electrics were also replaced. They sounded like top end pickups then.
Best cover on youtube dude...and not just for this song.... all about the performance.. holy fuck.
Thank you for your kind words!
You pulled all the wires.......THEN what did you do beside clean dead spiders off them? Did you replace them above the clip?
If you look at 7:06 and onward, all of the black wires are new. (I think all of the old wires I pulled out were gray, red, or blue.) I just removed the old wires, one by one, and replaced them with new ones. I did not touch any of the wires going to and from the pick ups, because that was different wire that was not at issue.
Err, umm, aah, err, um aah (etc, etc, etc)
Guilty! 😉
What a load of b******* Wildckats sound good as they are, just leave them alone.
Nice backing vocals. I’d turn that guitar way up though! Lol
WHOA! Just found this, great job!
Thank you!
Love this song!
Cool
I assume that you mean 100k ohm, 150k ohm etc for the resistance? 100 ohm wil eat the whole signal in Duncan mode at 5:51
Using the Duncan mod is in fact placing a resistor parallel over the volume pot. So the logaritme of the pot is disturbed and it is now become a semi lineair pot. That makes the behavior different for our logaritmic ears. The Kinman is way better in this way.
Thank you Sir! This vid is a great help!
Thanks for an informative vidoe.
Thanks for showing what a pain in the butt this is. I was about to attempt this but I'd rather just wire new pickups instead switching the magnets like I planning to.
now do it clean, and take care of the buzz
The buzz is coming from the unshielded alligator connector wires. Only audible during testing. In other words, once I put it all back together properly, the buzzing immediately went away.
Great video. Thanks mate. I’ve had my Wildcat since early 2000’s and have had trouble with the bridge pickup. Plus “that” tone problem. Was thinking of purchasing a new harness but this looks like a great option. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I love this guitar and this mod would be the way to go. Best wishes. 👍
I love that but v treb was the new meta maybe
People usually think that punchier, brighter or clearer sound is a better sound. It's not. That's only coloring. Pickup's job is to act as a guitar's microphone, not add character. That whole thing about covers, for the most of people is waste of time. You can change it, but it won't be better, but a bit different. That is it. The best tones in music history were achieved on guitars with metal covers (Freddie King, BB King, Chuck Berry, Albert Collins, Petar Green etc..).
If a guitar doesn’t have that frequency you get when you rub your fingers together in front of your ear, I’m out. I have to have that clarity. This pickup cover replacement ended up being a great thing for this guitar, because it gave back enough of that frequency that I am still excited about this guitar. You are absolutely right that clearer is not necessarily better. I kind of disagree with you that a pickup is a guitar’s microphone. (I would say that a guitar is fancy decoration for the pickup.) But even with that said, if it is the microphone, then as we know, recording engineers manipulate microphone placement and EQ to achieve just the sound that they are looking for.
Yeah, whatever. The improvement in clarity, with a greater openness in the high end is not an improvement. You nailed it! Muddy, crappy sound is where it’s at! 😐
I need to try this
What gauge wire did you use? Could you give a reference of brand and type of wire you used to upgrade? I ordered my wildkat last week and it’s almost here! I’m planning on upgrading the wiring , potting the pickups, changing the roller, spring and adding a vibramate plate!
I used whatever was mentioned in here. There is even a link to buy. A huge amount of useful information here. www.award-session.com/pdfs/Epiphone%20WildKat%20Tone%20Mods.pdf
Hi, considering the angle or the slope which is visible at 1:36, you could have totally done without this new raised bar and passed the strings directly on the bridge which is high enough for that. Besides of that, i also recommend changing the 7/8 inch spring that these epi come with and use the 1 inch spring instead (don't buy from Bigsby brand, they're too stiff) my 2 cts.
That doesn’t work, because the strings will slip off the bridge unless there is enough break angle on the bridge. I can imagine why a longer, softer spring might be a nice thing. I’ll have to consider that.
@@DrumStrum Some people have tried successfully, just take a ruler and measure the angle, if there's enough angle, the strings won't slip off because of the pressure, my es295 copy has this with a B6, no problem at all, and really responsive and smooth
Drunk handling a camera….
Guilty as charged. (My young kid helped me out.) 😂
I changed the pickups on my guitar to two dogear Kent Armstrong P90 pups and at the same time had the guitar changed to standard Gibson wiring: each pup has one tone and one volume. This simplified the wiring scheme drastically. After these changes. The guitar went from a lifeless “boiled hotdog” sound to a brilliant, beautiful, gutsy, very detailed & awesome sound. It cost $250 to make these changes but now this is a really amazing guitar. It’s worth every penny.
I rewired one of my Wildcats with ‘50s Gibson wiring (2V/2T), and I immediately knew it couldn’t stay that way. I switched it back perhaps a couple of months later.
my wildkat costed 150€ I cant imagine puting another 250€ into it
Distortion is better witbout treble bleed
Great video, Thanks ! I know the principle for long from my '81 Ibanez Blazer ("Simple"), and implemented it - without too much research - in all my guitars. But i didnt know the duncan or kinman scheme, thanks for your great explanation ! And - please dont care for stupid people anyway ! Your video is a great help for anyone who is really interested - f##k the rest ;-) Cheers !!!
Nicely done. Sounded great.
Great set!
thats nice bro! Im also doing some one man band covers 👍
I have a Wildkat. The way I keep her in tune. Is I do,nt use the bixpy at all. I just move the bar out of the way. Works for me.
Looks awesome! Can't wait for more content!😝
Great video, thx
Are you using Kohms or Ohms from the 270?
See the video description and some of the earlier comments. I totally screwed up and used the wrong values. Should be kOhms.
The resistor is in range. Depends on pot values. Disregard the keyboard experts. I like kinman but may try fender w two res
Oops on your part. In 20 or 30 years that guitar will have no value cause it's not a epiphone anymore
A peice of cerial box works better than a cloth to remove knobs
Just cut the cover wires off!
amazing
How did you attach your wires to the volume pot for the testing phase - alligator clips or solder?
I managed to be able to use only alligator clips.
Yes my man you have just just proven my problem is with having the cap and resister in parallel is doing exactly like you say, making not a lot happen until you get to 2-3 on volume
Just be sure to take what I said with a grain of salt. As you will see in the video description, I completely botched my cap/resistor values! (Maybe you botched your values, too!)
that's a good video thank you
Mammoth task! 💪🏽 brought a smile to my face this
I agree with your updated comment. The last 75 years of electric guitar, there should be a zillion mods to choose from, but only a handful because those who experiment and explore, are mocked because Leo said so.
Tone knobs are Much simpler
That first riff had me going "aaaaaaaaaaah What time is it?"
