German YouTuber: How I Overcame Years of Anxiety and Rediscovered Joy (MathemaTrick)
Meet Susanne Scherer of @MathemaTrick. Rockstar, dancer, and your famously-hot German math teacher. In this podcast episode, we talk about her struggles with anxiety and mental health issues and how therapy and hypnosis helped her to heal and to start a new life. I met Susanne while Salsa dancing and we quickly became friends. Through numerous conversations, she convinced me to start my TH-cam channel I had been talking about for years. So, it is very special for me to have her as a guest, especially because it is her first interview in English! She was really nervous about her ability to speak in English, but I think she did great! What do you think?

When I started therapy, the first couple of therapists were not a good fit. Sometimes, it takes time to find the right person. However, you might be surprised at how a conversation with someone who has gone through something similar might help. One of the isolating aspects of loneliness is the belief that what you are feeling is wrong and abnormal. A lot of my guests struggle or have struggled with feeling desperately alone, it is not as uncommon as it feels. Find me Instagram (melding_minds), and let's talk.

@skidicp When I was in a similar spot, the only thing that helped me was therapy. This was because I didn't even know where to begin to look for the answers. If you have had a really obvious traumatic experience, in some ways, it is easier to identify the root cause of why you are struggling with something today. In turn, it is more difficult when that is not the case. The first couple of times, I went to therapists, they wanted to know my life story and then come up with a treatment plan. What I needed was to tell the therapist what my goals were for our session so that the therapy was focused on that. It could be as simple as "I don't know why I can't be happy when I have all of these things in my life that I have been told should make me happy." It turns out that I really struggled with feeling accepted. My relationship at the time didn't help me feel better even though I was loved because the lifestyle they wanted for me and our future children would have meant that even in my own family I would have been an outsider. Once I figured that out, the rest of my life started to make sense, I started to heal, and I have been gradually happier each day. It was painful to leave my relationship, and even more so to know that through her pain, she really just wanted the best for me. I really want the best for her as well, but I know that her happiness romantically exists, but with someone else. Of course, there were no children involved, so that made it easier. I am not saying that to project my previous situation on you, but the larger point is that you are not broken. You are just missing some critical information that a professional can help you find. If you are interested, I can send you the contact information for mine. She even still does virtual sessions.

I am amazed at the courage of the people on Melding Minds to reveal themselves to everyone out there. This particular podcast, although longer than some of the others in the series, really grabbed me. Sharing the difficulties of childhood thinking and behaviour. Being open about an addiction and its effect on friends. Appreciating friends who stuck it out through thick and thin, and understanding those who didn't. Recognising those who make it their daily business to help others, e.g. teachers, often without recognition from the general public. Last but certainly not least, the key to serenity, and I quote Paul: “Being able to like who you are and where you are” I absolutely agree, although it's one of the hardest things to achieve. Big thumbs up to Crombie and his incredible ability to actively listen and create a safe space for his guests to open up.

I am also surprised but pleasantly surprised. In a time where we statistically feel more alone than we ever have, knowing that other people are struggling with or going/went through went the same things you are can make you feel less isolated. And that is a step towards feel seen and not always feeling "invisible".

Great conversation, as a single mother, I asked my son everyday “How was your day?” He said “fine” everyday. The question should have been… What made you happy today?, what excited you?, what made you frustrated? Make a game of identifying feelings we have throughout the day. When he got to be a teen he didn’t know what he was safe sharing. Therapists: just like you told him what you needed in a therapist is what you tell them in the beginning. I need someone to operate like this to help me….and if they can’t follow that get another therapist. ❤

I had the great pleasure of meeting you in line for pizza in the middle of nowhere. The conversation we had was nothing short of wonderful. As for men having a safe space. I believe we can often struggle to let ourselves feel seen and safe to the depths of our souls. The world is becoming a place where men and boys alike can cry. I found myself being closed off to my wife for fear of her not seeing me as her rock or her seeing me as less of a man, until the day she sat me down and told me I was safe with her. As a young man, I needed to hear her say it. I felt like I needed permission to be sad. But from that day to my final day, I know I have a safe space not just with her but everyone in my life who cares for me.
