Drop Nineteens - Kick The Tragedy (Bass playthrough/cover)
Excuse the flickering - the ceiling fan was on during recording.
“Kick The Tragedy” is the 4th track off Drop Nineteens debut album Delaware. Released June 19, 1992, the album is now considered a shoegaze/alternative cult classic. The band had an erratic, short-lived history but time has passed and allowed the original members to regroup (Chris Roof drummed on “Delaware” but did not join the reunion) and release their first album in 30 years titled Hard Light (2023). I discovered this band in the late 90s when watching an epic (still epic) TV Show “The Adventures of Pete & Pete”. The song “Delaware” regularly featured.
In anticipation for the release of ‘1991’ - a collection of b-sides and rarities coming out next year (2025) I was listening to my vinyl of Delaware. The bass on the album was really pushing through my speakers exceptionally so decided to pick up my bass and jam along. Recorded a session playing “Kick The Tragedy” following that listening session. I edited out the spoken interlude where no bass plays.
I have enjoyed seeing live video footage of the band reunited too, enjoying Steve Zimmerman’s bass tone.
Just recorded this via D/I using my Cort G Series bass, which I purchased back in 2008. Yes, I play bass like a guitarist but hopefully you can comfortably follow and learn it. Simple but tight tune to jam too. Standard tuning, just rip it all out on the low E string.
This album is available on vinyl as a re-issue, and the band also made a fan video for the song just recently. Link below.

The Sundays - Folk Song (Guitar playthrough)
มุมมอง 5594 หลายเดือนก่อน
"Folk Song" is track 3 on Static & Silence, released in 1997 on Parlophone/Geffen. Written by David Gavurin & Harriet Wheeler. A guitar playthrough of The Sundays "Folks Song". I was actually working on "Love" and "I Won", but I've always had fun picking away at this one so with some free time I gave it a take and came out okay enough to share for listening enjoyment, or visual guitar applicati...
The Sundays - Through The Dark (Guitar Play-through/cover)
มุมมอง 64611 หลายเดือนก่อน
David Gavurin's work on "Blind" still remains conceptually incredible to me, "Reading, Writing & Arithmetic" is perfectly locked in time to the era, but on "Static & Silence" he really shines with his guitar technical proficiency with the song-writing shifting a lot too. This tune is a B-side from the release of the single "Cry" in 1997 (CD2 and cassette). I love the romantic elegance in the so...

The Sundays - Noise (Guitar play-through Rhythm & Lead)
มุมมอง 381ปีที่แล้ว
A short tune from the Sundays I first heard as an accompanying single to "Goodbye" on a CD long gone. I just love the atmosphere of the song and, like the album 'Blind', the guitar parts are layered in moods that visually drift along in a very whimsical and dreamy manner - somewhat melancholic and nostalgic. The lead guitar licks are way cool! Tuning is just standard tuning EADGBE. My pedals in...
The Sundays - Goodbye (Guitar Playthrough)
มุมมอง 5Kปีที่แล้ว
My favourite song by The Sundays, and one of my favourite guitar performances from David Gavurin. This album holds a special place for me. I perform the song in Open E tuning, and very confident this is the way David played it as well from the few snippets of footage I've been able to see the guitar performances. He played a Gibson ES-335 on this tune in studio. To tune your guitar to Open E, s...

Very nicely done. Great feel. And memorizing where all the changes / rises occur is no small task. Cheers, - SZ
@dmitri8905 thanks for your comment bud. Yeah it's a bit of an odd composition - structurally not conventional. Just many years listening to it helped but was fun working it out at last
Great job on this, absolutely nailed it
@alecspidalieri9849 cool people are still coming across the video. Thanks bud, was a fun recording
What’s the tuning you’re in??
@drewstrong2356 Just standard E tuning
My favorite song by The Sundays !
perfectooooooo brooo!!! maravillosoooooooooo!!😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🥰🥰🥰🥰
@@SrMauroxHunter101 Mil gracias mate!
always loved the guitar part of this song. this video is everything! thank you
@@flor-zh4mc I get really kind comments on this video. It was great playing this recording as I was in the zone and enjoying the music. What a band
THIS IS GREAT!!!!!! TYSM FOR THE TABS AS WELL!!!
@@eiia9418 Enjoy learning and playing along!
Thanks for this, I love The Sundays and it's great to see how may others do so too.
@chrisbarrett8659 cheers Chris! The reaction to the video has been a surprise and the bands music is certainly still adored by many
Wow! Why have I never heard this song?? And I'm a " B" side girl❤❤. Great job!
@Irisheyes228 hello again! Yep, I think this would have fit perfectly on Static & Silence. Instead a b-side but here it is
@@AdrenalineConcept I completely agree! I actually found myself listening to most of Static and Silence last night. My ❤️ heart belongs to the Blind LP but something about the melancholy of "Static and Silence". Through the dark, to me sounds like "When I'm thinking about you" some of the chords. It's such a treasure to hear and find a new song, "new to me" from a band that was a part of your life..🎶🎶
Amazing cover, i saw a comment interpreting this song as someone climbing a tree to watch the sunrise. This song brings me nostalgia even though I just heard it for the first time one year ago
@kylejones4440 enjoy yourself immersing in the music and the visuals that accompany.
Like Harriet David Gavin doesn't get enough credit
@MichaelRector-qf7xp strange too given guitar dominance of the era - but also a lot of players too at the time. Hands down my favourite guitarist.
Is there a tutorial??
@Sonamy09 no tutorial but I have put the chords in the description. There's chord and tab transcripts for the song out there very close to what I'm doing here
such a pretty cover great work
Very kind comment. All credit to the band and string performers for a beautiful piece of music
Bravo!
Always loved the chords in this song. "Love" and "I Won" has some great drum work but I am sure back then there were drum machines of some sort, but who cares it was and still is amazing!
@Irisheyes228 there was drum programming on both albums, e.g. Goodbye combines live and programmed hi-hats. But Reading, Writing... was more predominant. Drum sound was just very different - mic and recording techniques, bigger deeper drum shells (U2, Phil Collins, Simple Minds) come to mind. Patch appeared rock solid live
@@AdrenalineConcept such a fan of Phil Collins. U2 so many great drum solos..Simple Minds " Alive and Kickin 🥁🎸🎶🎵..The trips down memory lane....
I have been a fan of The Sundays since 1992, and Goodbye has been one of my all-time favorites. What you have created is absolutely phenomenal, you took me back to the moments of youthful days, when life was simpler, and music had true meaning. Thank you so incredibly much!
@Irisheyes228 this is an awesome comment to receive today. I recorded this cause I love the song, and am a huge fan of David Gavurin. If someone could learn it, cool. But to have someone have memories and associated emotion unlock, that's really special. I'll be doing Folk Song shortly as I have some time
@@AdrenalineConcept you're absolutely welcome! I was reminiscing old songs on you tube by The Sundays and you popped up. Your cover is truly spot on! Those riffs are undeniable @ the 3:31 mark I was blown away, I'm a fan! Looking forward to hearing more from you. Best of luck and thanks for the memories..
@@Irisheyes228 This is so kind of you. When I recorded that part I hit my overdrive pedal and the volume blasted my ear drums, but in a very satisfying way! I matched it more so to how David would play it live. You were fortunate to have been listening to them during the Blind era. Whenever I listen to Smashing Pumpkins, Feeder, or Jeremy Enigk I am thrown back into interesting passages of my life, so it's fun when music gives escapism. I get you. Your comment is timely as I just uploaded "Folk Song".
@@AdrenalineConcept and I just heard it! I never thought about how lucky I was being "alive" and enjoying those youthful days, but it was the best times of my life. Personal times... I was in the military, living in NY and got to experience so much of life at a young age listening to these amazing bands with extraordinary lyrics that you just cannot find anymore. I am shocked to say I still have all their CD's a priceless GEM in my repertoire. Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic/ Blind were always on repeat!!!
@Irisheyes228 I have the first 2 albums on vinyl (and CD for Blind and Static & Silence US editions) and I just discover layers every time I immerse myself in a listen. Winter listening mostly. In the military and travelling the USA, that's quite a unique world to be in early 90s from Ireland
Such an amazing piece, is there sheet music to adapt to piano?
@vectorthurm no idea what is out there but not being piano based one would merely be creatively interpreting
Please help with folk song by the sundays tabs!!
I uploaded a cover of this recently
such a good cover of through the dark!! how did you learn to play this song? ❤❤
Hey Jessie. I actually learnt this on bass. Then translated the root notes to chords. Listened to the song for many years ago so ear picks things up - helps if it's in your skill range and mine isn't exactly extensive Haha
This is so good ❤
Im from rural Sumatera island, love this song
Excellent thanks so much saved me so much time I was trying to figure out in standard 🙏
Can be done ambitiously (worked off the root bass notes) but not going get the sound and flow versus Open-E. Stoked this will set you up!
That was so beast bro amazing
So refreshing to hear people reviving this great band. Beautiful playing.
Every 30 years seems to be the revival of great music and bands after their initial wow phase - often the wow part not fully acknowledged when the band is active and creating great music. Nice comment bud.
Nice job. How great is this song and album, right?
My favourite album by them mate.
you think you could do Cry next? Its from their first album
Hey! I'm currently working on another song off Blind and 2 off their debut Reading, Writing & Arithmetic. I've jammed "Cry" a few times - lots of guitar layers on Static & Silence (3rd album) so hard to work out best way to play for the arrangement. May get onto doing a play through unless someone comes along and does a great job
Thank you 👍
My pleasure, enjoy playing the tune
Hell yes this is gonna help me a lot with my arrangement man! I love this song
Awesome! That's one thing I hoped it would help someone with.
Very well played and nice guitar sound again my bro!🎸
Thanks again mate, yeah would have sounded better through the amp but more practical and quicker the way I did it.
Perfection.
That's extremely kind
thanks so much for the work you did and shared man!!
Sensational
❤ thanks for the cover. It deserve more views
So good
Entire album is just such a majestic listen.
I watch this more than I listen to the original - amazing
Too kind!
This is awesome Ian, Great memories my friend. Where are you now.
Totally identify with this song 🎵 😊
This is very cool - I love the "Noise" cover as well.
Thanks so much. 'Noise' isn't that well known a tune but confident the few who see that video will like it
Very cool man! Although I just have to point out since I don't think anybody's said it - and I hate to be this guy, but - your B string (the one that's normally tuned to B in standard tuning, that is) is a little bit flat.
Excessive chorus and reverb wouldn't help the cause. My ear isn't too locked into it to bug me. Drummer.
Love The Sundays and you’re doing an awesome job here my friend. Glad to see young people such as yourself have great taste in music. New subscriber, keep these videos coming….🎉🎉🎉
Thanks bud. Good music lives on! Be nice to do a few more but been in the studio with one of my other bands so only been working on original music. Happy you enjoyed this
I'm new to playing guitar. Would this be considered lead, rhythm, or both?
Combination as the band was instrumentally a 3-piece. So guitarist carries rhythmic and melodic responsibility. It's very much though a guitarist "leading" the track with isolated notes and arppegios over warm chords.
BRAVO
Is that a total open all 6 string strum in the mix ?
Nah, delicacy with the strumming pattern when playing the open E. Down strums catch the low 4 strings and upstrum high 3 strings. Only the final chord is hitting all 6 strings. I just note all strings in the tab as they are relevant
Great work man
Thanks mate! Happy the performance is being enjoyed
I Wish we can hear the sundays again😢
A wish for many but certain the curtain is forever closed. Got 3 great albums at least!
I got to give Harriet a bracelet lolz
This is brilliant work - well done!!
Thanks mate! Your comment is kind
Supercool ! Thanks. I tried to learn it in standard tuning and thought “ that’s impossible!” 😀
There's ways to make it happen in standard, but this gives it the warmth and flow standard can't quite achieve for the player.
Love this song! Love the whole album. Great job Sir!!
An album that was a left turn in the 90s but has remained a time piece for 1992. Quite something really. I also love Blind start to finish.
Very nice.
