I was watching a training video and thru synchronicity was led to this podcast. So heartfelt and genuine. It's so incredible to hear the spiritual aspect and challenge of the journey discussed so fluently and openly. We are often so focused on the technical.

Back in the day I worked with both harness and thoroughbred horses. My impression was that eye contact was a form of communication with them. It was as though they were reading you through your eyes. They didn't seem to mind if you maintained eye contact, especially if you were around them a lot. In fact, they seemed to expect it. On occasion, they would initiate a staring contest. No threat was implied. It was just something they did. Most likely they wanted something. I'm not sure. Anyway, you'll notice that when you first approach a horse they will make eye contact. It may only be for a nanosecond, but they'll always check out your eyes. If they're bored with you, they look away. Interesting animals...

Very critical discussion. It's definitely crucial that equine-assisted therapy and equine-assisted psychotherapy is a mental health resource that should be equitable, unbiased, and accessible to everyone who needs or wants it. Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. has been doing amazing, trailblazing work with bringing EAT and EAP to urban centers in underserved communities and making sure to work with licensed clinical therapists who're well-versed in cultural competency. Patricia Kelly has been doing trailblazing work on this. Good talk.
