The Windsor Institute
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ต.ค. 2018
For 20 years The Windsor Institute was housed in a three-building compound on 60 wooded acres in Hampton, NH. This beautiful setting is where Susanna and I went to work every day. Here, we taught as many as 35 classes a year with a maximum of 28 students. In 2016 we retired and closed The Institute. However, people who had not been able to attend a class begged us for help. Susanna and I heard their pleas and decided on a solution: to videotape our celebrated introductory sack back class and post it on a TH-cam channel. That way, anyone can take our class and make an heirloom Windsor chair without ever having to leave home.

Very informative, thank you
Thanks for the detailed lessons , I work and live in what used to be the furniture capitol of Michigan, back in early 1900's their was over 100 manufactures in the city of Grand Rapids I work in the last two manufactures in the 1990's, Kindel and Baker, each one where a 100 year old company. I now have a small business building furniture and repair.
I'm curious of what finishes where used on these chairs before synthetic varnishes.
So much good stuff.... You are a Saint of Wood Working for taking the time and having the foresight to document your process... Giving it as a gift to the world after you retired is really awesome. Paying it forward for sure
I wonder how the old man ( King) is doing these days......is he still alive ?
Alive and well and enjoying retirement.
Mr Dunbar. I have watched all your videos on making a Windsor chair twice. I must tell you i have never had anyone explain things so well. I feel like i already made one. lol, I am going over them again and taking notes, ordering what tools i need and have the wood . You truly are a great teacher, thank you so much.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm pleased if the videos help you to make a chair. Be sure to send me a picture. Nothing tickles me more than helping someone accomplish their goal.
@@thewindsorinstitute2047 I AM FINDING THE ARM IS THE HARDEST PART FOR ME SO FAR. IM ON MY 3RD ON
Beautiful! but isn't there a stage for using contour scrapers , in between travisher and sanding?
The seat is made of pine. It is soft and does not scrape cleanly.
Thank you for an amazing lesson!
That was amazing, great video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Mike! I built my first Windsor from your book with the blue cover. I also did my own research, etc., but what a wonderful form of woodwork. I hope this chance to say Thank You finds you...
Hello Mike, can you please tell me where to find a quality draw knife?
Hi Mark: I am using a knife made by Woodjoy. They are no longer in business. Barr Tools made a good one. Give them a try.
positive reinforcement for my first attempt at one of these marvelous chairs
How did it go?
Great tutorial Mike, thank you for sharing your insight in woodworking.
Great series, thank you for sharing. Wish I would have discovered chair making earlier in my life.
Thank you so much for this tutorial series, the content is excellent, the instructions are very clear and the bonus will be when we create the finished product for ourselves.
So far.. everything 👏👏👏. But the headlights. You just know that those indicators won't be seen with the headlight pointing at you at night.
how to weld the metal tang on a vintage wooden spokeshave. like the one you have. i purchased it online and found out as i was removing the rust that one of the tangs was cracked off. i tryed JD WELD and ca glue mix with salt. no good kept breaking off. a little help please...
It is difficult to advise without seeing the cutter and tang. Was is made as a single piece? If so, try having it brazed. This require finding someone with that capability. A gunsmith perhaps.
He did not explain well the issue of bevel up or down. I think it may be a case of learning to use it one way which soon becomes comfortable, and then deciding that is the proper way. Both drawknives I use were built with the handles bent up from the flat back. That brings them parallel to the stroke with the bevel down, and is most comfortable for me. I understand that a deeper cut can be made with the bevel up, and he illustrates that by taking a deep cut using a chopping motion, something he previously said shouldn't be done That's confusing. Both my knives have a slight curve to the blade, the flat back being convex. With the bevel down , the pressure against the blade tends to straighten the blade out when cutting, so I'm pretty sure they we're designed to work that way . Obviously any carving knife can be used left or right handed so they will cut either way, but the direction of the cut is different than a chef uses carving beef. The draw knife is more complex.
Kia Ora & Good Evening from North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand …great video bro …
Good man, great video very helpful. Thank you.
if this reaches you in a timely way, i just want you to know that i hope you got through all the flooding in hampton beach this past march weekend, i thought of you as soon as i saw it online.....
The flooding is bad, but limited to the beach area. We are two miles away and on higher ground. So, we are fine. Thanks for you concern. I hope you are well after all these years.
Hey Mike. Thanks for your sharing the Windsor chair knowledge. Your sackback class was one of the highlights of my life. The chair I built in your class is as solid as it was when I built it in 1998 and it should easily last another 100 years. Hope you are well.
Mike, my late husband attended your school. He love it. He made me two windsor chairs and a bench. I treasure them. Love your youtube channel. Marie
Mike, I'm still enjoying the dack bCk I made in your class 20 years ago.
Awesome! You make it look easy. Thanks for your time. A gift of love to future makers.
Thank you for your kind comments, David. I hope you make a chair that your family will honor and pass on to your descendants. You are correct. The VanHovenometer is named for the student who suggested the idea. That was our practice. When someone had a suggestion that proved to make the process easier for others we honored the guy by naming his suggestion after him. I would then come up with a humorous name for the device or technique.
Mike, These videos are great! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. But I must know! ...please tell us the backstory of the name: VanHoven-ometer? (maybe it could be a TH-cam short all it's own) My money is on a former student-or former mentor.
Really, really good thank you
I attended a workshop you had in Atlanta Ga., some 30 years ago. I'm sure you remember that time because President Jimmy Carter attended that session. Glad to see you keep your passion alive. Best to ya
Loving these videos and working my way through them. What a fantastic teacher imparting vast knowledge! I'm almost tempted to embark on a chair making journey myself...
great video ! thank you so much
Danger. Warning. Stop. Do not cut. I love it. Glad I'm not the only one that does that.
Fascinating. I intend to undertake a Windsor chair, and I find this in-depth information fascinating. Thank you.
You are a great teacher. I love this videos.
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and collection. Very valuable and appreciated.
Hello Mike. Very good video. What is the brand of milk paint you use? Thank you very much
I have always used Old Fashioned Milk Paint. I discovered it around 1975 and became friends with the fellow who produced it. Later, his daughter took over the company. I understand that someone else has since bought it. However, the product remains the same formula. This is their website: milkpaint.com/
Thank you very very much 👍
So useful thank you!
amazing I cant imagine old timers in 1780 s doing this angle work with hand drills!!! the chairs must have costed a fortune for them to buy a months wages>
The craftsmanship is amazing. Actually, around 1800 a Windsor chair sold for about $2.00. That was two days wages for a typical worker.
@@thewindsorinstitute2047so essentially that works out that a ‘commodity level’ Windsor built today should be about $600
do you have any skilled people near or in San Diego? Id like to be able to do a hands-on many classes to do and finish a chair !
Mike I LOVE windors!!! please tell us how we purchase one of these from you??
Your video is good, clear, instructional and informative. Thank you! ❤❤❤👏👏👏👍👍👍
Would you know when they started using rush seats in Windsor chairs?
Great video! Thank you
Hello! I just wanted to say thank you for your wonderful lectures. I love researching about furniture history and often times it is difficult to find in depth information online. This whole series is wonderful and appreciated!
Now I know why I always loved the Windsor chair.
Spent the first ten minutes of the video trying to find a gutter adze for under $200. Failed. Now learning a lot about the scorp market...woof.
Have you tried eBay or antique tool sites? Good tools are expensive. However, you will have them all your life and will leave them to future generations.
@@thewindsorinstitute2047 Great point! eBay is pretty expensive, and the quality is hit or miss. I think what gets complicated is that I'm not sure I'll want to invest a ton of money into specialized tools before I try it. But to give it a good try, I need to use decent tools. :) But the way you explain it sounds right. This is the way. I'm going to start quietly tool shopping on my cell phone. Thank you for taking the time! That helped a lot.
This is one of the BEST TH-cam videos I have seen about Windsor chairs!!!
Πολύ καλό και χρήσιμο μαθημα. Πολύ καλή ικανότητα μετάδοσης της γνώσης. 👍
Loved this. Learned a lot.
Great video!
