    Hey I just found you but love these videos! Question: so I'm undergrad EE at a state school but we don't really have grad courses to take and also our electives (which is like how we choose a discipline) are very limited unfortunately but I have an internship and am graduating early so I want to know any advice! Most of the research done here isn't in power. It's in embedded systems and I'm finding it really hard to boost my resume in terms of research (even though I'm in a lot of leadership positions) but I really want to apply for PhD or masters. Any advice?

    • @fancyfueko
      @fancyfueko 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hmm If you want to do power in grad school i don’t think the embedded systems experience will hold you back! that experience is still super valuable, a bunch of those skills transfer over to power systems, so you can definitely make that work for the applications. also if i were you i wouldn’t worry about finding a program that’s super power-focused. you can definitely tailor your app to support a transition to power, but even so most grad programs are flexible, and you can specialize once you’re in. many profs will let you do your own thing as long as it fits somewhat within their work. for example i wanted to do VR/hci/haptics work from the moment i started MIT, and i currently do that but in a drones lab because it can be applied there. the sucky part is that im often left to figure things out by myself rather than following up on existing research in our lab, so there are always pros and cons!

    Any recommendations on how to get start in AI in medicine and healthcare?

    • @fancyfueko
      @fancyfueko 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The interdisciplinary fields are a little bit tougher for beginners because they mainly focus on the applications and may assume you know the machine learning. I would recommend exploring some Kaggle competitions (if you search "kaggle competitions healthcare" or "kaggle competitons medicine" it should take you to the search page) and see how other people have solved the problem, then maybe try to make your own solution (referring to basic ML tutorials as you go) I also think its really useful to read survey papers, for you specifically on AI in healthcare and medicine, and that would also give you an idea of where the field is and what kinds of methods people are using

    Does Stanford have a pass/no record policy? Did graduate school interviewers/admission reviewers interrogate you about the NC in organic chemistry? Just curious as I just finished my first year at Caltech and am worried about my C+ in multi variable calculus 😥

    • @fancyfueko
      @fancyfueko 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup except it’s pass/no pass. The no pass didn’t have an effect on my GPA. I didn’t have any interviews for grad school and nobody mentioned it or seemed to care to be honest. although i highly doubt they looked at my transcript in detail, probably just at my overall GPA

    • @fancyfueko
      @fancyfueko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it depends on the class, a lot of CS classes would weigh the homework higher than tests so you can make up for it, but also there were huge curves in the grading of many classes when I was in undergrad that i imagine still exist today!

    Hey a quick question about gpa's, as iam applying internationally gpa scores vary from university to university ,for instance in my university its really hard to get a 9.4 or 9.3 out of 10 but in other schools its really easy to get that kind of gpa. Does taking gre help here?

    • @fancyfueko
      @fancyfueko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! From my past experience I think that the reviewers are very aware of this and are instructed to take it into account. When people review your app they are basically told that GPAs vary from institution to institution (especially at international schools) so GPA is usually not the deciding factor when moving an applicant forward to the next stage of review. For many applicants the GPA just has to be “good enough,” especially if the institution has a reputation for being rigorous, as in that situation a lower GPA isn’t a huge indicator that someone wouldn’t be successful at MIT. While the GRE can somewhat help, I don’t think it is considered super heavily, so in my opinion your experiences (research/internships) will be considered more heavily than any test scores. That being said a high GRE score is never a bad thing 🙂

      there’s actually no standard way in EECS, we don’t have rotations in this department like others do. but usually if you’re accepted you’ll have meetings with different professors during visit days, and one of them may offer you a funded position in their lab. however sometimes you are just given a fellowship for one or more years, but no funding offer from any of the advisors you meet with. however you will likely not be accepted without some sort of interest from at least one professor!
