I retired here from Newnan. Small town, way less traffic, slower pace of life. Beautiful mountains and Lake Chatuge. Love it here.

My brother had a place in Hiawassee on Skyhawk Mountain. He moved there permanently from St Pete Fla when he retired. My wife and I enjoyed visiting him several times a year, especially in the Fall when the leaves were in full color. We'd almost always go to the Georgia Mountain Fair. We also had some adventures on Lake Chatuge in his duck boat. He took us once to Blue Ridge for a ride on the train into Tennessee but we always had to go to Andrews NC for the Gibson Shoe outlet. And we also liked going to Brasstown Bald Resort for their buffet at Christmas. I haven't been there in 5 years since my brother passed but I still remember some of the places you showed in the downtown area. The Appalachian Trail crosses US76 a few miles out of town on the way to Clayton.

At that park we have live bands and sometimes we have people selling their crafts.

Hey and thanks for the video. From what I gather y’all are from my home state of Alabama. My wife and I now live in Southeast Georgia where it is hot for a good part of the year. We love traveling to the North Georgia mountains and have stayed in and around Hiawassee many times. The Appalachian Trail map you mention, starts near Amilacola Falls State Park. There is an 8 mile approach trail from the park up to Springer Mountain which is the southern terminus of the trail. I started section hiking the A.T. in 2023 and have continued this year and have managed to get 1/3 of it done completing 732 miles of it so far. I’m hoping to finish the entire trail by 2026. Wishes to you all for many more happy travels.

We just came back from the north Georgia mountains. We stayed in a beautiful wooden cabin, as well. It’s so peaceful up there!

Visited the museum last week. Exceeded all expectations. Well worth seeing.

If you’re not using repeaters, especially when traveling, you’re not going to have much success. Seems you were using it as a simplex radio (radio to radio with no repeater). Repeaters greatly expand your comm range for transmitting & receiving. The radio you featured is a very good radio.

We enjoyed your video. We’ve camped at Service Park twice so far and absolutely loved it both times. The traffic on the waterway is one of our favorite parts

Thank you for this video. I recently got my HAM Technician license and shortly before that got a GMRS license. You quickly find out HAM is complex and expensive. So I put that on hold and concentrated on GMRS. Bought a couple of GMRS HTs and have been looking at the Midland ammo box base stations. My interest is more associated with emergency comms. I'm still learning but it seems to me GMRS works well when you have a group of people off roading or something similar, where you have a small group that might want to communicate over a distance of 5-10 miles depending on conditions. We've even considered satellite phones but they are expensive and require a subscription plan. It appears that in the future cell phones may get satellite capability. Maybe CB is still the best option for your needs.

I have to agree with you to a degree. It seems in my area, most everyone is on a GMRS repeater. And they happen to be located in areas to where when I go home, I’m too far to hit the any of the repeaters. I think a lot of people are just out of that type of communications this day and time. A lot of people I know think GMRS is for hams and don’t want to spend the time taking that test. Maybe some day it’ll be nine popular with the average joes than it is now. Thanks for sharing your experience too!!

You're exactly right. In the alabama-florida South Carolina Virginia Maryland region it is pretty much dead. And if you notice on most of the videos out there the people that are using them are at Mountain terrain or in the middle of the desert. And in terms of range around here if you use one of those radios where I live at in Maryland you're lucky if you get two and a half / 3 MI. But again most of these videos out there that are in the middle of the desert they're showing 10 or 12 miles of range in line of sight. But going back to what you said you just can't beat a good Old Reliable CB radio at least you can hear more chatter. And in terms of ham radio I am a ham radio operator and I can also tell you that it is fairly quiet as well. Unless you get up on the HF bands. Anyway great video direct to the point
