The secret to helping men with their mental health according to psychotherapist Marc Azoulay
Did you know that men often need strategies to help them through trauma that differs from women?
We talked about these concepts, and more in this week’s episode of the Reawaken Your Health podcast with psychotherapist Marc Azoulay. Marc has been a psychotherapist for over a decade and shared his journey into this field after surviving trauma in his childhood followed by drug addiction and recovery in his college years.
Marc explained his dive into Buddhism and psychoanalytic theory that helped him become clean and sober. He shared how he was able to face his demons and use Buddhism philosophy to help him realize that he is pure at his core and could use meditation to gain clarity.
We then discussed why he began treating men and why he pushes to help mental health treatment get up to speed for males. He shared how both political ends of the spectrum can be damaging to males and their mental health.
Marc explained one of the biggest issues related to men’s mental health: loneliness. He notes that men are not taught to connect and the competitive nature and judgment that surrounds a man’s emotional state can lead to a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
We then explored how treatment for men can differ from women in that men are more object-oriented and need action. Marc explained how he has to challenge his clients and get them to see that the idea of sharing is not weak but powerful.
We discussed psychodrama and how it helps Marc achieve results with his clients. He also explained the idea of process circles and the use of the meso poetic heroes journey.
We covered much more on anger and rage, as well as the need for group therapy and retreats. Marc went into the detail on the need for individualized therapy prior to group sessions, where men form a community and bond.
Marc is the founder of Men’s Therapy Online and leads wilderness retreats to help his clients release from the past.
Please join us to learn more about the importance of addressing issues of mental health for the man in your life.
Please feel free to reach out to Marc Azoulay at menstherapy.online

      Hi. The relaxation part can be difficult depending on the person. That's what I work with people on. Generally speaking, your ribs need to relax down and in to get your back muscles to relax. You can try switching sides often but ideally you want to be able to sit straight back or stand with a neutral spine.

    Hi! Thanks so much for this informative video :) I was wondering if I have to lean back if I use my exercise bike in a recumbent position? I usually lean forward (straight back, not arching) and hold the bars to engage my abs (the bars are chest level for my bike since it converts between upright and recumbent).

    • @DrAmyNovotny
      @DrAmyNovotny 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! It really depends on how your body is positioned on the bike. If you are trying to get a leg workout, I'd recommend leaning back into the support so you can focus on your thigh muscles learning to do the work. If you are sitting up straight, you are training your back muscles.

      When you go to a doctor for a preventative check up, you typically don't get a cancer diagnosis at that time. You get might get referred for additional testing to explore what's going on. So, I wouldn't say preventative check ups are bad and I don't believe Katherine feels that way either.

    I don't think there's really any such thing as an "autoimmune" disorder because the human body isn't stupid. It isn't attacking its own body. According to scientist, Lida Mattman, PhD, what the immune system is really going after are the "stealth" Cell-Wall-Deficient bacteria hidden in those tissues. CWD bacteria cells are so tiny that they're as small as, or even smaller than, the cells of a virus. In addition, it takes months for them to be seen on a petri dish so pretty much all lab tests miss them because their tests only run for up to 3 days. Other scientists are saying Vitamin D isn't really a vitamin, that it's a natural steroid which was misclassified as a vitamin back in the 1920s. So I wonder if that's one reason why people feel better after taking it: are they, in fact, taking a (natural) steroid? In addition, scientists say this D-substance feeds the CWD bacteria. They LOVE the stuff so, of course, they multiply and grow stronger, eventually making us sicker. I avoid taking "Vitamin" D supplements. (There are websites and YT videos on the science behind the "Marshall Protocol.") What finally cured my heart disease was homeopathy. It has cured so many problems in my family, even my loved one's "incurable" "bipolar with psychosis" and another relative's so-called "schizophrenia." (What they both seem to have had was Toxoplasmosis, a common cause of mental disorders typically misdiagnosed as "bipolar" or "schizophrenia," likely contracted from our sick cat.) -- Linda, author of "Goodbye, Quacks - Hello, Homeopathy!"

    • @DrAmyNovotny
      @DrAmyNovotny หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing this Linda. I have many clients who use homeopathy as well as take vitamin D. Yes, vitamin D is mislabeled and it's a hormone that's produced in our body in response to sunlight. So many of our conditions are related to a multitude of factors and finding the right solutions can take time and be frustrating. I'll look into the CWD bacteria!

    • @lindasantini5618
      @lindasantini5618 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DrAmyNovotny I so agree with you, Dr. Amy. It's just my theory, but I think CWD bacteria are the same thing as the miasms. As you probably already know, if someone contracts, say, syphilis and has it treated with high-dose, short-term antibiotics, the bacteria just run and hide somewhere in the body. They often don't show up in the bloodstream but they're still there. They don't come out again until the coast is clear and they often simply pleomorph into CWD bacteria. The founder of homeopathy, Dr. Hahnemann, discovered the same thing 200 years ago even though he didn't use microscopes. Back then, syphilis was treated with mercury (!) which turned the illness into what he termed a miasm. They sure seem to be the same thing as CWD bacteria. I really can't tell the difference. I'm not a doctor or scientist, just someone who is fascinated by homeopathy and use it to cure pretty much everything in my family. BTW, there are lots of medical doctors who now treat their patients with homeopathy. According to the science underlying the "Marshall Protocol," (videos here on YT) people feel better with "Vitamin" D because it feeds their CWD bacteria, making them happy so they are not so hungry or aggressive. Scientists say that when we do this time and again, often decade after decade, these bacteria grow stronger and are what eventually overwhelm the body and kill us. The Marshall Protocol did help my heart a little - but homeopathy cured what was causing all the palpitations, skipped beats and other "gymnastics." That was years ago. - Linda, author of "Goodbye, Quacks - Hello, Homeopathy!" (It's about how psychiatry is quackery and cures no one - and is also a primer on homeopathy.)

    Wow I stumbled upon this open focus/feeling space in my own meditation explorations (I think this is the same thing that would be called "the felt sense of being" in meditation language.) I kind of underestimated its significance for a while because it seemed almost too easy but now do this all throughout the day. It's basically instant liberation, you are immediately "unstuck" from some inner point of view or fixation and feel clear and open and free and not in opposition to anything. I imagine the space expanding to include the entire universe and everything the you can perceive. Amazing shift in a matter of seconds. Fantastic to hear the brain science behind this!

    Problematically "ancestral ways" are too often interpreted as meaning only a century or few. The refining of flours into degermed, dehulled ocurred centuries ago. Coconuts by the way may be a major contributor to the shortened lifespans of Polynesians, and one CANNOT in good conscience prescribe significant use of that saturated fat. Do beware of foods limited by habitat, and understand the facultative differences in r- and K- selection occurring in different populations, however "ancestral." Consider also the severe effects of presence, for example, of alcoholic, dissociated, abusive fathers. Psychological studies have noted the extreme correlation of obesity with early abuse. Over 97.5% of obese report increased threat perception - unrelieved stress, to more generally identify the problem. In that massive percentage in light of the cognitively destructive effects on the brain and in our dense, unrelieved social exposure, itself a factor in unrelieved stress, it is to be expected that a significant reluctance of the other 2.5% to admit truthfully to experiencing extreme discomfort, that the percentage may in fact approach nearly 100%. Religion is also a suppressor of normal cognition, replacing clear introspection with dogma, false guilt, false ingroup comparison, increased threat perception beyond anyreasonable norm. Whether entombed in a culture prescribing killing of apostates, as occurs in far beyond a billion humans, or in social exclusion, another equal number exposed to the destructive effects on familial and general inclusive, altruistic love (children seeing through the coercion and social rejection occurring within family by religion, DO experience forcible outgrouping in this culture to an extent larger than admitted). "Comfort foods" available in fast food outlets, certainly contribute to the persistence/addiction to all these cognitive, emotional, ingrouping/outgrouping factors. As obligate social animals, we are subject to making continuing poor choices due to social forces upon our need to feel safe, desired, secure. While no single factor may be sufficient, the web of malignant social effects rather surely does surpass sufficiency, and though "addiction" is improper attribution, we can use the term, as the universe of factors inducing persistence of antihealthful behaviors IS well defined by Coercive Addiction, an ill as destructive as abusive forced child prostitution or violent enslavement, IS forced upon individuals through the two specified her in my note, resulting in what is ERRONEOUSLY termed "epidemic." It is each of us, failing to become aware and act counter to, those abuses, who remain CAUSAL factors to poor health. In and since medieval times, the young, evolved to outbreed rather than inbreed, flocked to the markets and fairs that became cities. Since those odd excrescences now attract humans throughout their entire lives until older ages, we might well include this as coercive and destructive social pressure, as it may be causal to the desire to abandon natural affiliative attachments. The illusion of endless alternatives, preventing development of such necessary attributes as forgiveness, openness to resolve disputes, and other perhaps once more universal and courageous behaviors, is, as this unedited note indicates, part of that web of coercive malignancy. (see, btw, Stanford Forgiveness Project, to understand how intimacy is necessary, and requisite!, to resolve even the most severe breakdowns in the healthy relationships absolutely essential to health, longevity, and full cognitive development.

    Why would I pass an EMG done on my leg and hip if a nerve is pinched? I can not lift up on toes on right leg. My low back muscle does tighten when I lift my right knee. How do I get that low back muscle to release? I have a tender spot right of my lower thoracic spine?

    • @DrAmyNovotny
      @DrAmyNovotny 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. If the EMG was fine on your leg and hip, that means the muscles themselves are okay. You could be having a disruption in the nerve signal coming out of your back that goes down into your calf to prevent you from going up on your toes. To get the back muscle to release depends on how your body is positioned. I can't tell you that without looking at you because I could give you the wrong advice and easily make things worse. Very interesting information! It all resonates. I experience crushing mental health problems when I eat junk foods. She is right, it is sooooo addicting. You can get stuck there if you don't get help. If I want to be happy, I need the proper diet and supplements. I order healthy foods from a meal prep company when I'm tired of cooking. Best investment I've ever made in my health. I didn't realize the supplements after one minute would already be producing an effect? I have been trialing aminos for many years now. I hadn't realized there's an amino that can help with endorphins/hug feelings! I just started on DPA this week after that discovery. Do you have opinions about iodine? I have read it requires the right cofactors or can be unsafe, so I'm not currently taking. I have stopped a cold in its tracks with it before. I have read (potential) positives it may have for the thyroid, preventing cancers, etc. I also had my methylation genes tested so I've been exploring that angle of health too. It's a lot to unpack with all these pathways and whatnot. But when you've suffered, you're willing to study and implement. I studied to be a pharmacist so I nerd out on this stuff. I don't respond well to most meds so it's been helpful to find some alternative options.

    BARLEANS FLAX OIL helped my client come completely out of a long depression. Joy was in her late 50s. I owned a pain treatment clinic here in Carnation Wa. I was a myoskeletal therapist and had overcome devastating headaches and back pain. I got well after years of suffering suffering and bought the clinic. Joy had been a crime scene investigator 17 years earlier. She had fallen at the scene of an investigation and broken spinous processes off in her back and neck. She had a couple fused vertebrae but they were done minimally and with bone. She was sent to me by a professor, i had helped with anxiety issues from the local Kirkland College. Joy had blinding migraines, stiffness and back pain. Besides all the heavy heat packs, massage, ROM stretches, arnica and epsom salts baths and massage, Joy was feeling much better but still depressed. She had already been cutting sweets, taking my favorite enzyme, megazymes and a good full spectrum probiotic. She had been on antidepressants for 17 years. All if these people as you know have stomach sleep issues. JOY had very dry skin and hair and said she felt like she seriously needed an internal lubricant. We decided on flax oil. She started taking 3 flax capsules with every meal. Within weeks she was acting strangely happy. Very very happy, singing, laughing. She claimed she felt she had come out of a tunnel and that is why she was so happy. She ran out once FOR ONLY A WEEK. When she came in for her massage appt, she said she was BLUE 💙. We discussed the changes and I asked her about the supplements. She said she had not taken the flax oil for a week. She stopped and got more on the way home that FRIDAY. Early on Sunday, two days later, she called singing hallelujah. She said she couldn't believe it, she was HAPPY again.
