Small Double Deck N Scale Kato Layout Part 2 - Less is More
Glued down the foam, roughly painted the bases, drilled holes for the bus line and turnout cables, cleaned and glued down the lower track, had a go at ballasting (more practice needed!), also glued down some earth.. Thanks for watching.

Small Double Deck N Scale Kato Layout Part 1 - Less is More

Less is more. Only 1.25m x 0.8 meters (2.6ft x 4ft) in size, the layout should provide enough running and switch ops interest. Three bridges, a passing siding, potential for five industries, a town, mountains and tunnels. Lower deck can easily run six axel locomotives as well. This small Kato layout will work for any era for Us, UK & European road names. Built on very inexpensive 5cm (1/2 inch ...

The Valencia floods were about 400+ kilometres away but we've had floods closer to home in Malaga. The area I live is between the Mediterranean and Atlantic which has its own microclimate but for sure we could be next. Spain has always had weather extremes. @@sarahwinfield3989 yep, EBAY isn’t quite what it used to be like a lot of things. Whatever price they are asking, you can always offer less, they have to sell but you don’t have to buy. Time is on your side. A lot of vendors and shops buy whole estates worth of stuff for cheap then promptly resell it for a lot more. I also do generic searches on Google, and other search engines which also search other less well known sites. Also ask in the model railway forums which companies they use or dealers or if they know of anyone selling in a certain area. Most model railway types usually have more than they need and may consider downsizing and sell off surplus items at a reasonable price. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Love your layout and attitude. I've also recently got into G scale. My layout is a smaller loop on some decking outside, with a passing siding and tiny goods yard. Tiny layout means no big locos unfortunately - Stainzes are perfect because they're so short. To add variety on a small G layout I can thoroughly recommend the equally short LGB E1 electric shunter steeple cab from the Mixnitz - St Erhard line in Austria. For DCC I've gone down the DIY route building the command station off an Arduino. For decoders, sound modules and smoke generators I've find mXion in Germany are excellent and unbeatable on price compared to the more established brands. I think also backwards compatible with LGB MTS kit.

    How many tracks is the N mainline? Is there room for a second or multiple station stops for all the passenger trains? Windows 98 is when I switched to Mac. • @rhopkin2512
      @rhopkin2512 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a double mainline and only one station. Originally, I had planned to have another double mainline and second station on the next level up but that is now occupied by the OO gauge track. The old LGB MTZ (Multi Train System) software is essentially like JMRI but it's the early LGB DCC (pre 2006 Marklin) and the communication protocols are ever so slightly different. I could read/write the decoders with my Digitrax/JMRI setup but not quite all of it and I couldn't change the speed step from 28 down to 14. All the old LGB stuff tends to be 14 step which is fine for my very small G-Guage layout and 4 locomotives.

Lgb that’s not so weird about the software differences here’s my examples I run digitrax. And any Kato has digitrax. Same thing with MTH on MTH z4000 Vs a Lionel feature response time. Rhopkin! Glad to see you’re doing well. You are fully responsible for me adding 3 rail o gauge. (Because of your LGB) But like a picky eater kid they can’t touch lol. The n scale is in its own train room double deck layout as you know, and then when I wish the room next door (rumpus room) I can setup the N scale Las Vegas and Los Angeles modules which are on wheels, and setup the whole thing in about an hour. the o gauge 3 rail has its own take down able modules. They store on my ceiling with lag bolts. The guys in my n scale club were worried I was going to be leaving N. at 110ish locomotives and 1200? Rolling stock , near 20 years of collecting there is no way I ever would. Still my favourite! You can do so much with space wise it is the best bang for buck hands down! Especially the passenger trains. But the o gauge for when i just want to see it run around on a loop and not so much worry about operations I enjoy the o gauge, for what it is. Which is VERY different from n. I really like after you seeing and watching your videos on the lgb, I think you did amazing in the space you have, including designing the track plan while away from home! Once I saw that you could do a not very deep benchwork on a big train and run big small locos like the styles you have, it was kind of a neat ide that inspired me Big trains in a small space. But I’m confused about the oo. I would have done a woodland scenics riser or some other grade between where the n scale mainline is currently and then on the 3rd level where the hornby is another loop of N. 3-4 mains. 3-4 n trains running. The fact that it’s Retro the hornby is really interesting and awesome. But I would have thrown it on a portable table of some sort. Like a 4x8 foot table. That is the common table size in ho with millions of track plans for ho out here. Oo being very similar. Something really cool on the typical 4x8, instead of 3 loops in 3 scales, it would be a different layout. To do something unique with that collection you picked up. With a uk theme. Where would you store the 4x8? On the garage ceiling of course! Upside down. Removable buildings. Can still park in garage. To get my fix like you I have the giant trains, and the tiny ones. If someone said Tyler here’s a ho train from your childhood (athearn) it would have to be on a non touching layout, that I took out when i wanted. I have one ho locomotive from my childhood. A sd40-2 in cp rail from athearn. Anyway glad to see your progress and the new schedule will be better it sounds like.

      Hi and thanks for watching and the input. I did think about putting the OO on a separate 4x8 or similar board but ultimately I don't have a huge amount of area to store the board, even on the ceiling and its easier for me long term just to have a single line OO around the top. I did consider putting the N scale higher but that would have also meant a secondary layer of foam to clear the bigger OO and my benches are high enough as it is, I would have almost been looking up at the N scale as it would have been 40cm above the lower deck. So, the N scale is DCC with multiple turnouts and will have as many as four trains running at the same time so I need easy access to them. The OO gauge is only a single line, single train analogue so once it's started it will just bumble around the tope layer keeping everything simple. Plus it cuts down the number of N scale buildings I need to fill excess spaces which halves the cost since the Hornby was free.

    • @rhopkin2512
      @rhopkin2512 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dremel and a drill press will steady the device so the drill bit spinning does the work rather than downward force but honestly unless you have eternal patience (which I don't) then just glue it and then dab white wood glue on the join surface if you want to simulate trestle bolts before painting. I just used Balsa wood but maybe you can also try spruce which is a much harder wood. N-scale you can get away with a lot, most people won't see it anyway. Thanks for watching.

    For cleaning track, I find soaking track in cheap white vinegar for an hour or two, then pull out and take a used toothbrush and barkeepers friend and this cleans off the rails, including deeply weathered [almost black] track sections. Once you get the shine rinse off with water. Just watch out the barkeepers friend rinses off completely and doesn't cake up on the rails.

      @@rhopkin2512grab a cheap beard trimmer or the flip out one on back of the 3 orbital shaver and mow some patches of the grass down where needed if you have wanted different lengths. Airbrushing that will look amazing. I would get brown or tan tile Grout for dirt, and sprinkle it where you want and then just on 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and there’s glue in the tile grout so it’s rock hard once wet and dried. Then you can put static grass tufts on the patches of the grout for weeds or new growth. I use mod podge glue not sure if they have that over there? White glue isn’t tough enough anymore. I really like the caves. You have talent there for sure. A TINY bit of glitter on the inside wall, so when the loco headlights hit it it sparkles like metal deposit seams. I’ve got one of these sets with the Serial controller that’s been in storage since I first bought it in the early 2000’s. The traction tyres on one locomotive had become very brittle and the other was sticky so I tried replacing them with 26mm x 2mm silicone o-rings which worked on a test run. Not sure how long they’ll stay on for.

    • @rhopkin2512
      @rhopkin2512 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're running analogue DC (direct current) locomotives and not DCC/MTS (generally similar low voltage AC current) digital control then you will need to isolate the sidings. Some people do anyway even if they have full digital control. Analogue DC control sends the same voltage to all the locomotives so of course they will all run at the same time if not isolated. If you're running DCC or MTS digital control and multiple locomotives are running at the same time then you need to make sure your locomotives all have a different digital address. I think 3 is the usual default address for NMRA DCC, my old LGB MTS digital set came with the addresses 2 and 4 pre-set into the two different locomotives. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

    Scenery. Paint the plaster cloth or table etc area with a couple nice Color’s you like of paint (I typically use craft or latex paint and 4 Color’s) and I spray alcohol to mix it and foam brush. Then Sift on but don’t completely cover (allow some paint to show through is fine, different Color grouts , then spray 50% alcohol on the grout. The grout is thin, has the glue in it and glues itself when it dries vs than spraying glue. I’m on layout 12 and I wish I knew what I now have perfected. I have 3 Colours of tan, and pre washed playsand for gravel roads and bigger gravel. Barrie has brown grout then green grass for forest. After the grout is dry then you add static grass, peel and stick tufts, bushes, moss, etc etc. it’s cheaper than any other method and the multiple Color’s look more realistic. Grout here is 26$ bag and I am just about finished 1/3. Vs one shaker of foam is 29$ and looks fake to me except if you’re doing IRELAND. I don’t know what area of Germany you are modelling although I’ve been there a lot. I put my MacBook beside me with saved folder of pics of the area im scenicing and I stare at that photo and match my paints and grouts to the picture. It works! If you pickup paint chips at hardware store and mix latex sample jars that’s one way, or you get the small craft paints is cheaper but you may have to mix to get shade you want.
