Oil change bonus footage - DON'T PREFILL YOUR OIL FILTER!!
A bonus clip from the Hemi's oil change. As I did not film putting on the new oil filter and refilling the oil, I didn't get to segway into this footage and, thus, did not add it to the episode. It just felt out of place.
However, given that it does contain what I feel is some pretty important information, I decided to upload separately.

Changing the oil on the Hemi

The easiest (normally) yet most important maintenance you can do on your own vehicle. For the oil filter episode of Engine Masters that I make reference to, I can only find a trailer on TH-cam. However, if you google Engine Masters Oil Filter Shootout, there are many streaming services that have the episode, so I suggest you give that a look there, if you are able. As I read all other youtubers and comments, I learned that about 98% prefill oil filler before install it. I bought a brand new car and I did change oil myself for 35 years without prefill the filter, but I don't see a problem. My car engine is still not showing any problem. I guess no matter prefill or not as long as you change oil every 5000 miles, you will be good to go. The oil filter supposes to filter the old dirty oil. Not filling the new oil filer with new oil maybe is the right way.

    I would recommend people watch this video: th-cam.com/video/939WTeorBnQ/w-d-xo.html which debunks the idea that oil is dirtier from the container. Further, if you're really worried about it, you can always use a filter to prefill. Howiever, there is proof that slight damage can occur to your engine when you do not prefill, which could be worse than small particles that may be in the oil you prefill with. Also, there are quality standards for more premium oils (Motul, Amsoil, and a few others). The argument that the contaminates in the oil could be greater than what's in your engine has been debunked.

    If you go on any blog about this subject they will tell you not to prefill it. The owners manual doesn't say to prefill it. I've driven cars over 250,000 miles without ever prefilling the oil filter. Just change your oil regularly and don't be paranoid. Small internal combustion engines ranges fine for decades before they ever added a pressurized system with a filter on it.

    There have been tests that confirm that not priming your oil filter causes a few second delay on establishing proper oil pressure. This is not fractions of a second. Do not buy cheap oil. You contradict yourself by saying it's recommended for diesel engines. Don't trust your oil? Why use it? Send it to the lab before you make a video spreading misinformation.

    Yea but, the oil in your engine gets circulated many times before it goes through the filter, that's a fact, even with diesel engines,, they all work on a bypass system, or a passive bypass system, or it would just blow your filter off, which happens on rare occasions when the bypass valve is stuck. So many people including experienced mechanics miss this important point

    Both incorrect, API and oil blenders have ISO cleanliness standards. Dont ever do this with oil from a bulk tank. My lab testing shows 32x more particles. The new oil is cleaner than used oil after passing through a full flow filter. I have a calibrated oil pressure gauge on my engine. It takes 3-4 seconds to fully fill the filter and pressurize the engine. A pre-filled filter takes less than 2 seconds. During cold weather operation, it is common for the bypass valve to open, allowing contaminents to be sucked up from the bottom of the filter, directly into the engine. The purpose of prefill is to saturate the filter media. This can be done regardless of orientation. Lastly you have a large volume of air in the filter. Air does not lubricate, and must forced out through bearings and other orifices, displacing the oil. Similar to a garden hose. Would be nice if oil filters were designed with air purge valves. I clear flood my engine, until oil pressure is achieved, then I start. Ive installed pre-lube pumps on some vehicles. Large deisel powerplant engines wont start unless crank bearings are pressureized.

      @@Keith-e5f LOL, who cares how many miles you've driven, it's irrelevant. Are all those miles on one vehicle, how many times have you analyzed wear in an engine and did you do a tear down and exam that engine during rebuild. Commercial trucks average 1-1.5 Million miles between engibe rebuilds. I have racked up a million miles on four vehicles, always filled the filter, always had exceptional long life performance.

  • @bobt897

    I agree with @PistonAvatarGuy, this borders on paranoia. If nothing else, when you start your cold engine some mornings, the filter is probably bypassing somewhat because the oil is too thick, & the computer sets the idle at 1000-1200 RPM. Motor Oil Geek sent a sample of fresh oil to the lab, it came back cleaner than the fresh oil in the pan. This myth started with VERY large bulk oil containers that had contaminants at the bottom. Cavitation? What about that quart sized cavity inside the dry filter?

    "Dry start" does more damage to the rod bearings than anything. Look at the back panel of the oil your buying. YES, there is API & SAE standards for oil, or lack thereof, at dollar store oil brand. Disable the fuel relay or fuse, crank engine 10 to 15 seconds, IF YOU DON'T prefill the filter. That way all oil passages are primed and filter is full. Reinstall relay or fuse. Enjoy longer bearing life & trouble free oil change. 😁👌

    How is putting oil into the post-filter part of the oil filter any worse than putting the same oil into the crank case? At worst, contaminated oil has to leave the oil filter before entering the crank case, rather than just being added directly to the crank case? I personally think the biggest contamination risk comes from people accidentally contaminating their own oil, rather than that oil companies risked a scandal by contamination being found in their products.

    • @613Mopar
      @613Mopar ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil goes from the oil pan (crankcase), through the filter, then gets circulated in the engine. Prefilling the filter by adding the oil into the post-filter part of the filter allows any contaminant introduced to be circulated through the engine, essentially bypassing the filter once.
