John 10 1 “Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 8 “All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them." It's hard to argue that 'the thief' is a single character like 'the devil' when apparently there are several or many of them. Verse 8 makes it sound like Jesus is talking about former prophets of Israel and Judah! A few verses later, Jesus identifies himself both as 'the door' and 'the good shepherd' who enters by the door. The adversary transforms from a thief or robber into a wolf. This is called mixing metaphors, and it's confusing... Adding words like 'rich and satisfying' to 'abundant life,' may be a bit of... poetic license, let's say. The text literally says 'have life and have abundant,' whatever that means... As Patrick has mentioned previously, Matthew 7 is actually just part of the sermon on the mount beginning in chapter 5; the chapter and verse numbers are arbitrary. The original texts are all in capital letters, with no punctuation or anything. So, what is the narrow gate? Well, within the sermon on the mount (or the sermon on the plain in luke), more than once Jesus lays out rules that are actually MORE strict than the Jewish law. That would certainly make it harder for folks to enter... If we want to take individual verses out of context and emphasize them, how about Matthew 7:20: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter." Seems very solid, but also seems like the opposite of 'faith alone.' Remember, the entire audience here was Jewish. They knew what the will of God was, and were being called back to it. In Acts 15, gentiles asked what the will of God was for them (us). They got their answer, which was reinforced in Acts 21. This answer, though, necessitated an all-church meeting to decide. Why? Because Jesus never told them! What is the significance of this? And why don't we abide by this decision?

On Sunday, amy stressed how important it is to get the kids when they're young, so they can 'experience the real Jesus, as revealed in the gospels.' Did paul ever know the real Jesus, as revealed in the gospels? Does Paul seem to know or care about anything in the gospels, except for the most basic events of the passion story? Was it important to Paul that anyone experience the real Jesus, as revealed in the gospels? Would experiencing the real jesus be enough to save anyone? Isn't the really important thing to believe that Jesus died for one's sins and rose again? might not experiencing the real jesus necessitate admitting that the real Jesus was always a Jew (and never a Christian)...? Patrick's message inspired some interesting thoughts too. When the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, does this mean tempting us to sin? What is the opposite of this? Does life, and abundant life/abundance, in this context, mean Jesus persuading us to choose obedience? Does life, and abundant life/abundance mean following the law?? Does this sound like the gospel??? Didn't Jesus only come to die? Is the thief responsible for our sin, or are we? Is Jesus responsible for our obedience, or are we? Doesn't 'lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil' make more sense if Satan the tempter is working for God (after all, we're asking God, not Satan! to lead us not into temptation, right??) What would it look like if everyone chose obedience, all the time? Do we have a word for this? What would it look like if everyone was obedient, because they had no free will? Do we have a word for this? At the end of his message, Patrick did actually stress repentance and said 'jesus is here to help us' so that's surprising and significant...

Such a powerful message! When Pastor Patrick says "All too often we are judgement oriented, fairness oriented, & forgiveness is unfair" I feel I fall victim to this as well and think it was a great reminder to stop that bad in it's tracks.
