A common misconseption is that you can always go straight on in stockholm terrain when orienteering, if there is no big hill in the way. I don’t think there are any before spring, but it’s good training!
@@forestdetour but In spring will you go to race?
@@balazshavasi3480I don’t know, I prefer classic forest orienteering. But it is a good training method. Maybe I should try a race? Do you like to run sprint orienteering?
@@forestdetour Yes I like it because I think forest is harder and longer and my first forest experiences wasn't good
@@forestdetour and you should try a race
@ Ok! Maybe I will try it in the spring!
Nice video will you go to sprint races?
Where are the affiliate links?!
@@oskarlin I’m waiting for all of the shoe companies to call! Must be something wrong with my phone?
Interesting to see the map changes...mostly the contour lines either get smoother, or more pronounced due to erosion or develop emend. Similar to what we see here. Oddly, that solid roadtrack didn’t look correct...it was a triangle, but the left part you took after you tied your shoes seemed incorrect. The whole thing looked like all three roads met in similar arcs, essentially neither should have been the solid track.
Yes I can see what you mean! Looks a little weird when zooming in!
Will be there a race soon?
No the race season starts in the spring, but there are some training races during winter.
Nice video
Nice video Where are you from?(I m asking because the snow)
@@balazshavasi3480 Stockholm, Sweden! It’s a thin layer here now so it’s easy to run in.
this a great video sad my country doesn't really have this
Orienteering is popular in some European countries, but is available to do in other places too. In what country do you live?
Do you make your own little training maps, and what program do you use?
@@johnrobertson7583 This one is a local club that put up these new training courses every second week, this one I drew the course by hand on a old map. But you can try ”Purple Pen” for making own courses on digital map files/images. For own mapmaking I recommend ”open orienteering mapper”. Both are great, free software.
Fun task. I think the right hand trail option would have worked as well or better...leading to the vegetation boundary being followed to the next trail then spotting the boulder on the trail edge as an attack point.
@@johnrobertson7583 Yes that might have been faster, especially if getting to the control safer.
Great video
Thank you!!!🙏
@@forestdetour please make episode 2
Second one is uploaded now, hope you enjoy it!
You are still great. I got much more lost than you in all my night orienteering (which is like 2 races and maybe 2 o-trainings).
Thank you a lot! I think that night orienteering is a skill that needs to be trained regularly, I mean that even if you can handle day orienteering you can’t automatically handle night-o. It’s a kind of as a separate thing almost.
@@forestdetour yeah, agree. It's very different.
I really like the small additions you have in your videos. The text is nice, as well as the really cool little red moving pointer and dot!!!
Thanks!
Can you show how to use the compass please?
Yes I could do that, just have to remember to bring the compass with me first! 😄
Haha nice i like it, so fun! It's important to follow the compass. I'll be competing in the 25-manna event. :)
Yes I really realized this when running without! But it is good training to run without compass. I was supposed to run 25manna but I got a cold so have to cancel my prticipation. Looking forward to see your movie from the race. Good luck!
Such a good boy!
Yes… Do you mean me, or the poodle?
@@forestdetour all of the boys!
LoL, fun strategy.
Yes, it was really interesting way of orienteering training!
Yeah, night orienteering is another level. At least you had fun watching it afterwards. Great commentary. 👍
haha too fun! :D
Detta är GULD content!!!
The last one is also called “the (Danny) Glover”…
How do you make the custom map footprint shapes? Thats a nice highlight in your videos.
Thanks! I do them with some kind of “masking tool” in DaVinci, which requires some work but that way they don’t cover too much of the video.
@@forestdetour Yeah nice...MP orienteering uses davinci...but I am cheap and have only the free programs!!
@@johnrobertson7583 I have the free version of DaVinci! You can do a lot with that too.
Kompassen! KOMPASSEN!
1:45 like they say, no job is so simple it cannot be done wrong. 😉 4:35 I wouldnt say classic parallel error...you were in an area with more short elevation gain vs that small marsh 150m to the NW...but depending on the vegetation growth for summer it could look a lot different 5:12 AND remembering that you paid to do it also...LOL
Yes, every kind of mistake is possible when running a little bit too fast for your orienteering capabilities! No it was more like a parallel mistake in my head, you know when you want so much to believe that you are on the right spot that you read the map just so it will fit to the terrain around you! And yes, I paid both with actual money and with physical and emotional pain! 😅
@@forestdetour Yes, I have started to micro-orienteer a little more early on into a route choice. Oh...so kind of like most of our politicians? I finally got a video done, but need to figure out two things...quickroute doesnt let me trim the track if I forget to turn off my gps while I am at the finish gasping for air for 5 minutes...and I cant seem to get the trick of putting on screen comments in at the right time...all takes practice...you know if you learn to swear in a language no one understands...you wont have to resort to using punctuation marks for subtitles? Navaho, Swahili, Inuit, Gaelic, Hillbilly...!!!
Nice video because you mixed humor and technic
Yes, sometimes it feels more like a comedy show than orienteering!
This is a 7 km long distance I ran on Saturday. It’s shortened and has got comments with my thoughts about it all, that might explain a little bit what happened. Please leave a comment if you have questions or just want to add your thoughts! /Daniej
Nice to look. Right is more technical and by this way more interesting
@@jurafevrier2012 Thank you for the feedback! And yes, I also mostly prefer the more technical routechoice with more orienteering because it’s more fun to do!
Good video🤗
And man...the way you insert randomly the map and then fade it to the edge! 1:45 Thats a nice touch! We simply call these courses Permanent, or fixed. But they also generally have a cluesheet to go along with the map.
Thanks again! I like to do this editing extra things with the map, it is a bit tricky but I get to learn the editing software. 😅 These permanent controls has been around in Sweden for ages but this newer kind of thing called “Hitta ut” is maybe 10 years old and uses your phone (or printed map if you, like me, prefer that) and has become very popular outside the orienteering scene. The cluesheet is in the map or on the free printed map but I printed a limited area of the bigger map and forgot to bring the cluesheet…
Interesting concept. Nice video. I am struggling a bit making complete videos to upload which include the gps on a map view, and the camera view. I am using a recommended procedure of Avidemux, Quickroute, and Orientview. Can you briefly describe your process and the programs you use? Thanks.
Thanks! My procedure is probably not the most convenient, as I use windows “game bar” function to make screen recordings from the orienteering gps service called Livelox that akready has the maps in their database. Then I do the rest in the video editor (davinci). But I recently saw an instruction video that may help on XCJAGGES channel that uses Routegadget, maybe that can help.
Yeah, that was a bit of bad luck but you found it after all. So 👍
Ny chans idag igen!
Hey thanks for sharing. I completed an event over the weekend and am now trying to prepare a video to upload. Ive gotten a few tips on the programs to use...avidemux, orientview, and quickroute. Are those what you use? Evgeny Antipov made a nice video tutorial about the process, but I am hoping that you also may have some tips. I would think that I could merge my Livelox track video without having to create a whole other one thru quickroute.
Someone sold you a load of horsepuckey...must have been those guys at the bar the night before bragging about how they can run an O event along every purple line!!!
Yes those guys sure did fool me.. This is obviously to “run straight on” too literally I guess, but…if I only could swim faster and if it wasn’t a big hill in the way, then maybe it would be a great route choice!
Clue me in bro the method to know the control location, or even the feature…🤔🧐
Yes this is a bit confusing and one of my more experimental exercises, see the full length version where I try to follow the paths in the snow from all the runners in a competition. I could see where the control had been (from my map memory).
Kameran i handen under hela Långa natten?
@@forestdetour phew!
There’s only one thing that’s wrong here. Mr Detour is not in Finland.
But now: Only 9 months left to jukola! Hope to do a Mikkeli comeback 16 years since last time!
Well done I enjoyed your commentary, 1.25x speed was perfect!
Thank you, it was a viewer and club mate (Oskar) that came up with this idea increasing speed. I could increase the speed while editing, but in this video I liked to show my actual running speed.
What Software do you use?
So far, I have only been making the videos using editing software (free version of DaVinci) and use the video capturing function in windows 11 (“Game Bar”?) to record the Livelox gps track. I am curious of testing more automated solutions, have you any recommendations of Headcam orienteering software to try?
Amazing coverage of the event, thank you for the subtitles! Amazing video cant waot for more!
Thank you, that’s nice to hear!
This is my culture.
Do you use the sun in that sort of situation to also keep you on track?
@@jime2504 Good question, I was first thinking “no, only the compass and map”, but maybe I subconsciously are using the sun when it is this low and actually can be used to keeping directions. That is a good idea for a video, only using the setting sun as a compass - I have to try that sometime!
It looks like you are using a chest/belly cam. I want to use the same placement, for the main reason that I need a good wicking running hat and a headmount wont work while wearing it...along with not having a video showing me twisting my head back and forth while I am running, while also allowing me to show the map in the viewscreen as you do. My biggest hurdle I believe will be trying to find the correct apps/programs to sync the video to the GPX track.
I actually held the GoPro (hero 8) in my hand all the race, the stabilization is so good I didn’t have to think much about it. But I would recommend a chest mount/harness, I bought a cheap one from Amazon that works fine. I have problems with the gpx sync software so I take screen captures from Livelox website and edit it manually in DaVinci which is probably not the easiest way.
Thx. I know the 8 is still decent…and youre right…the stabil is pretty darn good for that model…Kiziev in norway uses one…but whats crazy is people here still want $200 for one when you can get a 10 or 11 for near the same price…i paid 200 for a 10 with 2 tripods and the media frame with microphone and flipup video screen and three batteries.
More good advice on bears...make sure you have a set of good running shows with you. You dont need to be faster than the bear...just faster than your friends. Do you think Control 7 was 10 or so meters off?
I was saving energy all this race just in case I had to run away from the bear! I think the 7:th was right but the gps slightly offset?
@@forestdetour Yes that definitely happens in denser woods...maybe that patch of trees had an effect, it seemed you were underneath the shrubbery...also sampling rate of gps device...although it looked right on the rest of the time...
