Have hyperbaric chambers been used in stroke recovery?
Thank you for the interesting question! When it comes to hyperbaric chambers and stroke recovery, there are two different perspectives to consider: American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA) Guidelines: According to AHA and ASA, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is not currently recommended as a standard treatment for stroke recovery. The most recent guidelines, including updates through 2024, continue to classify HBOT as unsupported for routine use in stroke treatment due to insufficient evidence of efficacy. The AHA/ASA suggests HBOT should only be considered within the context of clinical trials. For stroke recovery, they emphasize evidence-based approaches like lifestyle modifications, rehabilitation, and proper management of risk factors. HBOT as a Potential Treatment: Despite the AHA's stance, HBOT has been explored as a treatment for stroke recovery. Some studies suggest potential benefits like improved brain function and reduced inflammation, but more research is needed. HBOT is considered an adjunct therapy and is usually provided in specialized centers. Patients interested in HBOT for stroke recovery should consult with their healthcare provider and consider centers with expertise in hyperbaric medicine.
As additional information, in the US, the FDA has published a list of approved indications for hyperbaric therapy; stroke is not currently one of those indications. More information about approved indications and how to know if a center is accredited is located here: www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/hyperbaric-oxygen-therapy-get-facts.
