Power Quality, power factor correction and voltage regulation
A Power Quality simulator demonstrating the effects of heavy inductive loads and real loads on an electrical distribution feeder. This simulator also contains power factor correction capacitors and a voltage regulator, which serve to mitigate the effects of the previously mentioned voltage sinks.
The system operates on a 120V, single phase supply. All overhead primary buss work is energized at 120V, 60Hz. All phases, AΦ BΦ CΦ, are actually "in phase" with one another. However, the voltage drops seen at the end of the circuit are real. The blade switches, located in the lower frame, are used to switch the various components, such as inductors, voltage regulator, capacitors, lighting load, etc, into and out of the circuit.

    With Tesla coil the (air)capacitor is there mass of the wire and moist ground. The resonance can be kicked on by shutting the flow, so it will create a water hammer effect that produces back spike to the circuit. Or a static discharge from external source.

    Despite the humor with the Ken doll and music, the experiment shows just how serious even a tiny arc flash can be. Those burns the doll got would be just as bad (actually worse) on real flesh. Now, multiply that by hundreds of times (a typical 120v arc like you'd get working on hot wires in a house) to tens of thousands (Commercial or industrial switchgear) or millions (power transmission/distribution) and you can easily see that arc flash is no joke. In my career I have experienced arc flash a few times at both the residential and commercial levels, and it was only my PPE and a LOT of luck that my worst injuries were some singed hair and ringing ears. Some incidents are caused by damaged equipment, but most are caused by "experienced" workers getting complacent and working on energized gear when not necessary. All it takes is one small slip up to cause a serious arc flash. Stay safe!

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The transformers are homemade. Various parts from around the shop were used to construct the tanks and bushings. The cores are made from old isolation transformers, originally used for street lighting. They have multiple tap arrangements which allow for proper voltage transformation. High sides are usually fed 120 wye. This produces 120/208/240 out the bottom. If the high sides are fed 208 delta, however, then everything out the bottom has the same ratios but get boosted by √3 ---> 208/360/416. Although not standard, those voltages can still be used to provide demonstrations for load balancing exercises, etc.

    Conceptually, I want to agree with those conclusions but I’ve recently done a similar experiment and am running into some issues that perhaps someone can rectify. Using an LRC meter, I measured the inductance of the high voltage winding of a 2kva control transformer. The inductance was 0.6 Henry. Using the 2πfL formula, that gives an reactive impedance of 2π(60)(.6) = 226ohms. The winding resistance was 2 ohms, making for a total impedance of 228ohms. The applied voltage was 120V rms. Using rearranged ohms law (i= v/Z) that should yield a excitation current of 120V/228ohms = 0.5amps. However, when I measure excitation current, the actual measurement is an order of magnitude lower (0.04 amps). To be that low, the actual impedance must be something closer to 3000ohms instead of the 228 ohms that was empirically measured. Assuming both LRC and ammeter are correct, does anyone have thoughts on this discrepancy?

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very curious indeed. I'm not an engineer, unfortunately, so I'm not sure why your LRC meter showed such a low inductance. But if the transformer was open circuit, and the meter was applied to the high side, the value of L should have been much much higher.... as you indicated by the empirical data. Maybe make sure the meter isn't being "fooled" by something trivial like parasitic capacitance? Not sure if that would affect the accuracy of the measurement... but it's worth investigating.

    @guyteigh3375 ปีที่แล้ว

    Admittedly, no "ferro", but I would guess a tesla "coil" which is really just an air-spaced transformer deliberately driven at resonance is very similar to this effect. if you drive a Tesla Coil out of resonance, you can get a fairly predictable "turns ratio" based output. Once resonance is achieved, things get exciting and the voltage has no (theoretical) limit iIRC. A difference though, is that the resonance on a Tesla is a function of the capacitance and inductance of the Primary only - if the output coil is loaded, the TC stays in resonance. Yet it seems that with ferroresonance here, the secondary would dampen the effect (or I guess could possibly bring it *into* resonance ????) Thanks for the video, i didn't know it was an issue with power distribution kit.

  • @andrewparker318
    @andrewparker318 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow!! How do you keep the arcs from hitting the secondary?

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool ปีที่แล้ว

      The toroid is large, 66" dia. That forces the gradient of the E field to point outward from the top load, rather than downward. As a result, the arcs first move away from the coil before bending downwards to strike the Earth. At least, that's my theory. 🙂 I've never had a strike to the secondary yet.... so it's a good bet.

    Could I ask how you built your transformers? Also, could this phenomenon be replicated with a wye primary and a delta secondary? I would love to show this to my students. Thanks!

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool ปีที่แล้ว

      I built the bank using small, dry-core, multi tap transformers. They are set inside the tanks and being driven with 120/208. They will provide 120/240/208 (depending on how they are wired). From my limited understanding of ferroresonance, the condition needs an LC series circuit to be established, with respect to neutral/ground. Because of this, it is very difficult to create a ferroresonant condition by wiring the high sides of the pigs in wye. Wye creates a low impedance path between the transformer inductance and ground, rather than another phase. This neutral/ground relationship is in parallel to the cable capacitance. So the inductive current is not required to flow through cable capacitance to get back to the source. By wiring the high sides in delta, however, the current has the option to do just that. However, if the secondaries were wired delta, like you mentioned, then it might be possible to create a ferroresonant effect with backfeed, when the primaries are isolated. Would be a good experiment. 🙂

    • @stephenlock6542
      @stephenlock6542 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh! Gotcha. I forgot to mention we typically float the neutral in wye/delta so as not to create an Open Delta situation if we lost a power leg. So, it would have to be an ungrounded wye primary to create that situation. I’ll be looking at finding those capacitors and hope to replicate what you did. Awesome stuff!

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool ปีที่แล้ว

      @stephenlock6542 yes, you have a point! If the neutral is isolated (H0) then there could conceivably be a resonant circuit created through the primary coils of the transformer and the cable capacitance. Hadn't looked at it that way before. 👍

    That looks nicely in tune - did you use PF correction caps to get the power factor so high? I wonder what makes the arc sit for a second or so before moving on!

    • @MegavoltHomeschool
      @MegavoltHomeschool ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. The coil runs synchronous at 120bps. Slow break rates seem to cause lazy streamers (long lived ground strikes). The reasons for this, however, are not yet fully understood. The charging circuit relies on resonance to boost voltage. High side off the transformers is 14.4kv, 60Hz. But because the caps are resonating with the inductors, they (caps) are charged to ~30kv in one half cycle, 8.3ms. The circuit is inductive, but only slightly. XL = 10,800Ω. XC = 9500Ω. So the tank is fairly close to unity already (series resistance is <25Ω). I do not use PF correction. Adding parallel capacitance to the inductors would cancel inductive reactance and this would, in turn, lead to a loss of thru current into the tank caps. The coil is, however, slightly overcoupled at the moment. But that only presents a problem when running wide open.
