I am passionate about supporting people and books that make a difference. I work with SMEs and entrepreneurs to make them stand out from the competition and grow their businesses: clarifying strategy and creating effective content marketing, including print and ebooks. I also offer executive coaching and consulting services to publishers.
After a 22-year career in trade and scholarly publishing working with major publishers such as Oxford University Press and Macmillan, during which I pioneered digital publishing, I trained as a coach and set up Alison Jones Business Services and the Practical Inspiration Publishing imprint in 2014 to establish a new model: partner publishing.

Episode 433 - Writing for Busy Readers with Todd Rogers
'The TL;DR, the too-long-didn't-read of the whole thing, is that everybody's skimming. So we need to write in a way that makes it easy for skimmers if we want to achieve our goals as writers.'
Todd Rogers has been using behavioural science for good for many years, from strengthening democracy to increasing student attendance, so his kids were somewhat underwhelmed when he turned his research to writing.
But think for a moment what the world would be like if everyone wrote clearly and effectively in a world where readers have little time and patience. Imagine the time not wasted, the offence not taken, the goodwill not squandered, the ideas not lost in translation.
Todd argues, and I agree with him, that better communication can lead to a kinder, more efficient world, and it starts with us. Whether it’s an email, a business report, or a book, here are practical ideas for writing that's simply easier to read.

มุมมอง 3614 วันที่ผ่านมา
'Mom, why don't you just write it like you talk to me?' When Laura Hamill set out to write a book about the subject she knew best - the subject she'd spent years researching in theory and practice - she naturally drew on all the studies, statistics and evidence she'd gathered together to support her argument. Turns out, that's not what the reader needed. (And it wasn't just her editor who told ...

"As she was coached during a 15-minutes conversation, she put down each of those worries and at the end of it she was standing there in her full potential and I was like, wow, that's amazing. I want to learn how to do that." If there's a foundational text of executive coaching it's 'Coaching for Performance' by Sir John Whitmore, first published in 1992. Sadly John died in 2017 and so Tiffany G...

มุมมอง 222 หลายเดือนก่อน
'We have this image of a reader being someone who's giving time and attention to our words... but online that doesn't happen.' Anna Faherty found out the hard way that there were no books to help her teach a course on 'digital storytelling' - so she had to write her own. And if you're trying to write a business book then much of what she tackles in it - writing for busy readers, structuring ide...

‘I’m going to tell you how you should be doing it, but it’s up to you to do it. But I’m going to dress it up in a way where the message might land 15 minutes later when you’re on the bus going to town. And you’re like, Oh, that’s what he meant.’ It takes courage, tact and humour to point out to a leader not only that there might be an issue with their organization’s culture, but that the issue ...

What a great idea, virtual hecking, alternative prompted questions.
Genius, isn't it!?
I'm from another country but I came to your video looking for the book, the end of the video was very strong. I have my own business and 3 months ago I lost a client who was a large part of the revenue precisely because of the personal relationship, sometimes I try to "repair" but unfortunately the wear and tear is done and it doesn't do much good... I was looking for book content and a video of 1 minute convinced me, I need it now hahaha thanks for the video
GREAT JOB in this podcast, Alison and wonderful interview with Michelle
Magnificent conversation. Congrats.
Thanks for this video,it really saved me 🙏
Great conversation!
Thanks for having me on the podcast Alison!
You are so welcome - thanks for being such an awesome guest!

Trust and self-belief. Yes, I can relate to the absence of these. I suggest that temperament (MBTI) plays a big role in giving oneself permission to 'feel' smart and capable, particularly in the presence of others. I only began to feel this while in my late 50's in an MSc program where my Academic Advisor had the same temperament as I do - INFP. He understood me. This freed me from trying to make myself understood, thus permitting me to just focus on learning.
Thanks for making this inspirational video on the playbook “The Life Brief” How exactly can you find what really matters to you? I’m truly inspired and liked this video plus subscribed!
Glad it was helpful!
10 seconds in and all I want to do is read that book. Thanks for the post :)
With diction and clarity like Alison's I could forgive her anything. What a superb person.

Brilliant conversation to listen in on.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you a lot! True gem. Please send Richard warm greeting from random strategist on the internet, his earnest and grateful extramural student. I hope some day I'd have a chance to speak to him live.
Two brilliant minds...the world is a better place with these amazing humans in it. I'm not a writer but whenever I'm around these guys they inspire me to think and read better.
Couldn't agree more!
good interaction program
it's very helpful for me☺️
Is the book different from Scott Adam's "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life"?
Yes - more of a personal angle. But both are well worth reading!
@@AlisonJones Thanks!
Thank you for that read

Looks like you have the first video on TH-cam about Richard's new book - with the author himself! Great coup. I placed a pre-order for the book at the weekend and given the quality of his last book I can't wait to read this one.
It's excellent, John - I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
This is an excellent conversation. Definitely worth watching. It sent me back to my writing with more focus.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cathie!

Great interview, which made me think both about the topic itself ("enoughness") and about the processes of writing and publishing. I particularly loved the phrase "the charm of abstractness" to describe the book someone is thinking about writing, rather than a book which is being made real through the process of writing. Also Becky used the word "socialising" in relation to once her book was out in the world. It made me think of how we socialise puppies, but of course that is an ongoing process. The thing about a book is that we can't modify its behaviour post-publication (unless we go to 2nd/ 3rd edition etc). So the process of writing, revising, editing, honing is like front-loading all that puppy training. It has to be done before the press rolls! Lots to think about here. I've been thinking a lot about the interplay between "what is enough" and ambition recently, so a book I'm going to have to read!
Glad you enjoyed it Sheila and yes - SO much food for thought here!
