Far-Flung Friends! Part 30: Pacu-Based Confusion (ONI: Spaced Out!)
This VOD is the 30th part of my Frozen Forest run! In this episode, we finish off our meteor protection on the Metallic Swamp and experiment with building a Pacu farm based on Luma Play's design (th-cam.com/video/TmPosrs3hCo/w-d-xo.html). It is very hot so I am quite confused so apologies for that! Cycles 675-696 are in this video.
Sadly we are likely going to end this run here as the new DLC will be out of Beta quite soon and I am keen to start a new main run with the world generation changes as soon as that happens. I believe we have achieved a major goal of understanding how to handle Meteors successfully with the new Spaced Out mechanics, so 'tis a bittersweet ending. I'm glad that you've all enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to applying these lessons in future runs!

    About how many cycles of Algae is in the starting biome for a setup like this? What about on the whole map? How long would it take for you to blow through all your algae?

    • @erisia_gaming
      @erisia_gaming 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This question would be a lot easier to answer if ToolsNotIncluded still worked. I believe there is somewhere in the order of 100 tonnes of Algae on a classic Terra asteroid. 33 Algae Terrariums would use about 1kg/s of Algae, so that would last for about 170 cycles? Useful in the early game but would eventually be deprecated in the mid game.

    The terrariums ability to overwrite small tiles of gas plus their bit of carbon dioxide consumption also makes them useful for creating little breathing pockets in your carbon dioxide sink. Create a little U bend off the main shaft and put the terrariums there. They'll consume/overwrite enough carbon dioxide to fill the upper part of the bend with oxygen. You don't need very many per pocket since the dupes will only be running over here to catch their breath while working in the carbon dioxide shaft.

    Do you really get a full pipe of incoming water in this setup? The way you've set up the buffer some packets will combine before going in, but some won't, and it seems like this will ultimately limit average throughput when pumping mixed water and polluted water. One naive thing I often do to solve throughput issues is use a pair of liquid buffers in parallel. One thing I like about this is that you can set it up so that the buffers can be deconstructed individually without halting the system, if you want to convert the stored liquid into bottles.

    • @erisia_gaming
      @erisia_gaming 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes I was struggling to find a way to do this neatly so that it works independently of where the Water and Polluted Water are. I think using the Liquid Reservoir is definitely part of the solution but I'd love to see some better takes on this. The easiest solution may be to just have one Pump on the top and one on the bottom, and move them every now and then. Or to build the system slightly smaller so that a buffer is built up for the occasional mixed packets.

    • @adudzik
      @adudzik 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@erisia_gaming If you feed two different reservoirs with different pumps, and combine their outputs, you should have 100% throughput as long as the inputs aren't too imbalanced. A fully robust solution does seem tricky without messing with each pump output individually.

    • @darkehartplays
      @darkehartplays 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When I used a similar build to this inspired by the Rime Revenge run I simply left the initial water supply bridged on to the pipe so that it would fill in gaps in the pipe between the sieves and terrariums. Eventually, after melting the second pocket of ice, I switched to permanently using the main water tank as the source for the terrariums and began feeding the water from all sources to it. Around halfway through melting the second pocket I also installed a tepidizer there and experimented with different settings on it, and by the time I was ready for the third pocket I didn't pump any of it out until I had melted it all with an initial bit of terrium water and a tepidizer. At some point I also had the warmed water pipe run all around the base for temperature control instead of a separate loop, and doing this helped a bit with keeping the pipe spaghetti under control.

    Now that geotuners exist, you can use it to increase the output of a salt geyser, use a bleachstone hopper to use a small amount of gold and the salt for bleechstone for a feed back loop. With the bonus heat it spits out raw salt and 195 degree steam, perfect for turbines. It ends up being more worth while but higher set up cost than the pure play water geyser

    one thing to add about chlorine vents is that they are also salt positive if you are growing dasha salt vines, including the sand for fertilisation because of rock crushers, so they actually are one of the most effective vents to geotune, for more information watch cgfunguses tutorial on salt vines make sure to not put 5 geotuners on a volcano as that will make them give off rock gas which has a lower specific heat capacity, meaning you get less heat out when you do 5 compared to 4 edit: you mentioned that at the end, thats what i get for commenting before i finish

    I guess a very good solution could be using atmo suits inside the recreational room and taking out any gasses of the saunas. This will prevent heat transfer between the pipe and the sauna because there is no gas/liquid in the tile. But because the sauna creates heat it will eventually overheat unless your cooling loop runs through conduction panels. Or maybe the same water output could run into a conduction panel just before going back into the steam room.

Then made the cooling pipes for those tiles insulated instead of radiant, and over the course of many cycles while I was busy with other projects, the tiles heated up to 700C, vaporizing the water, and setting free a swarm of adorable bugs. One lead-suit culling later and we're starting all over again with some important knowledge gained.

    Because Abyssalite is completely non-renewable (and necessary for other purposes like the all important Insulite which consumes it in huge quantities), I would not even CONSIDER geotuning a volcano for power except as a last resort. There are other, better, easily sustainable power options out there. Basically anything that consumes Abyssalite gets an automatic F tier from me.

    • @erisia_gaming
      @erisia_gaming หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is true. In the very late game, you probably shouldn't be using Abyssalite for any Geotuning. Using it for any other geyser is absolutely a last resort if you intend to get to using Insulite later on. But a Volcano consumes so little Abyssalite and gives so much power I don't think this is practically going to make a difference to the amount of Insulite you make in a game in 999/1000 playthroughs. A single 4x Geotuned Volcano will consume 1.8 kg/cycle of Abyssalite and you have hundreds of tons of the material typically available. As you say you can transition to other power sources later, but Geotuning a Volcano could be the means to get you to the late game without much long-term cost.

    Remind me, does insulated gas pipes exchange heat with the building by the intake, if they are in vacuum? If not, and the dupes can use this in suits, vacuum out the room with the sauna. Use conduction panels to cool down the saunas. This way the pipes wont burst But that would work only if the pipe is not exchanging heat with the input

    I liked the video, learned something from it, but I got to point out that geotuning nobium volcano is kind of ridiculous. 1) Nobium is great - but you can easily mine around 500-800kg from nobium tiles on that asteroid and just 'nope' out of there. 2) Remember that to make 100kg of thermium, you need 5kg nobium + 95kg of tungsten. You can then break down 100 kg thernium into 50kg of nobium and 50 kg of sand(for some unknown reason). This means, that you theoretically need only 5kg of nobium and some excess of tungsten to get the whole thing rolling. 3) Given that the superconductive asteroid is probably the most inhospitable place in the game (1k +°C almost everywhere and no resources) taming a nobium volcano is already a huge flex. Putting one or more geotuners there with dupes is just bonkers :)) If someone does it, they probably don't need the extra power/nobium from it, and certainly won't care about saving some refined phosphorus. Cheers!

    • @erisia_gaming
      @erisia_gaming หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, while it is technically very efficient, in practise it definitely seems like more of a flex than an actual practical thing to do. The perfect reason to try and do it! :D

    Personally I can't recommend this build since it's too unstable. Yeah it looks nice but I can't see it going past that. Sorry. General rule is that if you need to go back into the space to "fix or change things" constantly even after the build is "finished" then it's not worth the hassle. And god forbid it's a sensitive one like your refined phosphorus video. And no I'm not hating your ideas since it'll help invoke new and better ideas to others. My point is: Why not use doors to squeeze the steam out? It's much more stable. You can also just prep the room without opening the steam vent using shorted liquid tepidizers to heat up some liquid inside some pipes to get all the components up to temp. You can also use doors to distribute the steam to the steam generators at the top once its cool enough. If you're gonna say that doors are too slow, then power them. You can use atmo sensors to check if the amount of steam around the steam vent is over a certain amount (above 2k is fine) before you activate them to save some power. Honestly, a ceiling light probably eats more power than a door coz they only consume power when they're either opening or closing. And best part is that the amount they move scales with the preasure so if you have any over preasure issues just use doors and watch it eat 100k of either liquids or gasses in less than a cycle. This is a nice idea but don't use it in your games. You'll just get frustrated. You're honesty better off just using liquid duplication at this point.

    • @erisia_gaming
      @erisia_gaming หลายเดือนก่อน

      I like the idea of using doors to pump the Steam out and need to try it out at some point. But I've tested this build and it is stable once it's set up. The door at the end is to show how you could open it up if needed but it's definitely not mandatory. I'm showing ways that the setup could potentially break during set up and how they could be addressed as that sort of stuff isn't often covered in videos and the aim is to get people to understand how to think about problems in the game rather than following rote instructions.

    Duplicants will work during the bathroom schedule, and go when they need to go. I prefer to just have all bathroom time, 3-4 downtime to get home, and with plastic beds 2 sleep, and no work schedules. Doing this can also be beneficial as they will go more often allowing you to harvest more water per go.

      This is interesting. My main worry with this approach is that if your duplicants are frequently working far from the base, that they get pulled back for bathroom once and then downtime a second time, increasing travel time. This sounds like a good approach for dupes that have most of their errands in the base, like ranchers or chefs.

    One thing I always do: Showers go in a Nature Reserve room, so they are "forced" to get that morale bonus every morning. Just keep some natural plants in an area until you are ready to build showers.
