    Did you do the drawing on the canvas in graphite or charcoal? I'm just curious which one you prefer and any special considerations on that part of the process.

      @@jamescowgill4039 I use a charcoal pencil James. I just like the black lines and high contrast but you have to be careful not to smudge it. I tend to fix it as I go. I never know how much to repeat from earlier videos. Thanks for watching.

      @@jamescowgill4039 Yes, this one is on canvas. If you watch some of the other videos I’ve been experimenting with different surfaces. I like the canvas for its tooth and it’s tough, so I can abuse the surface.

    Love your work and I'm fascinated by the process. Was wondering if there was a specific reason why you didn't fix the drawing again after adding the shading or wait to fix it until the shading was complete? Whatever the reason, it certainly works for you.

    • @fred-gambino

      Thanks Wayne. I fixed it twice. Once after the outline was drawn and then again after it was shaded. I don't show it, but I do mention it in the dialogue. Glad you enjoyed it and got something out of it. :)

    I did a scratch built spaceship. Was in a charity shop and found a cigar shaped model. Turns out it was a Lego container and reminded me of the Zeppelin. I added bits and pieces including parts from an old printer, painted it and was able to drop it into photoshop with a space background. Looked great

    • @charlie1872
      @charlie1872 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the drawing us directly linked to the model and as such can be dynamically updated?

  • @charlie1872
    @charlie1872 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an analog space type sketch which I coloured with markers. Would the approach be to copy it into procreate then trace over it and use the procedure you demonstrated to sample the ref? I know in Bentley software you can remove objects by intersection. Many software packages have similar tools but a different naming convention. The model looks fantastic

  • @charlie1872
    @charlie1872 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can I ask you to expand a little on adding the “canyon” ref? How did you “sample” the colours? Are you using that black/white box on the left to bring the colour through? Sorry for the basic questions

    • @fred-gambino
      @fred-gambino ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charlie. Thanks for the comments and I'm glad you got something out of the video. For the colour ref I chose a photo with the kind of colours I was looking for. Blue sky, sandy orange etc. It could have been anything but the canyon pic made sense. Open the image in PS, copy and paste it into a new layer above the others in your drawing document, then change its mode to colour from the drop-down menu at the top of the layers pallet. Select the brush tool, then hold down the option key which will change the cursor to the eyedropper tool. Click on the image and PS will sample the colour you clicked on. You will see the foreground colour update in the pallet on the left. Release the option key and the cursor will change back to a brush. Then you simply paint on the colour layer. Keep doing this until you have the colours where you want them. Blue for the sky, oranges for the ship in this case. When I have the colours roughly where I want them I create a new layer above the colour one, leaving it in normal mode. Selecting colours in the same way I now paint on this new layer, which will be opaque so that I can remove some of the lines of the drawing beneath. Hope that helps Fred

  • @charlie1872
    @charlie1872 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. So glad I found this. I have struggled with software, my copy of PS crashes constantly and have moved to Procreate. I have never had a clear concept of how the layers etc works but this has certainly cleared the fog. Thanks so much for sharing this and shedding light on the subject. The ship looks terrific Charlie 👍🖊📐

    Cheers for posting this, so good! I used to be obsessed with drawing spaceships back in the early 90's, but I never managed to transition to digital art. That simple idea of having a perspective grid behind the drawing is such a great idea. Before the internet, I tried in vain to use perspective, but always found it beyond my ability to realise correctly. You're making me want to start drawing again! I'm trying to get my head around the fact you only have 53 subscribers?! Looking forward to watching this all later.
