Usually, chorale music is written in 8 part harmony, but the Hallelujah chorus is written in 16 part harmony and is difficult to pull off, even with months of rehearsal. I had always loved the Hallelujah chorus and I looked forward to performing it, but you should always be careful what you wish for. The best tenor in our choir was my buddy Dave and I thought it would be such a treat to sing the chorus with him, but as soon as he found out that we would be singing this piece at a special show and for Christmas, he stated that it was time for him to sail the intercoastal waterway. I was new to choir and I soon realized that the tenor section was looking to me for leadership. I was still learning SATB (8 part harmony), so I begrudgingly took on the role of tenor section leader. I browbeat the men into taking a part of the four part harmony that we had to conquer and to stick with it. As the date for the special show neared, I carried the book with the notes everywhere and I even rehearsed during my breaks at work. It was such a relief when the show happened and nothing went wrong. Finally, after three months, Dave reappeared and he brought his teenage son with him. As a critical tenor entrance neared (2:55) the tenors looked at me and I motioned for the tenors to take the lower two parts of the tenor notes. Everyone caught it, except Dave's son, who went for the high note (sticking out like a sore thumb). Dave shot me a dirty look and I gave it back immediately to let him know I disapproved of him taking a three month vacation.
