Dipterists Forum promotes the study, recording and conservation of true flies in the British Isles.
Flies are amazingly diverse and varied, and studying them can be hugely rewarding. It is true that some are pests or disease carriers but most are beneficial, many are attractive and some are spectacular.

Green Forest Hoverfly Hunt: Our ongoing search for Caliprobola speciosa in the New Forest
This talk, given on the 22nd November, 2023 summarises work by a team of volunteers to try to find the stunning Green Forest Hoverfly (Caliprobola speciosa), a rare hoverfly species which lives in ancient woodlands and is confined to just 2 locations in the UK (New Forest and Windsor Forest). Andy Murdock who leads this team, describes the background and approach which has lead to a better understanding of the species and its current status.

This is amazing ...thanks a lot.
Thank you very much for sharing this lecture. (note for myslef:MaxENT talk 32:03).
✨ "Promo sm"
Thank you very much for your talk on species distribution modelling! Is there a tutorial script for your maxent/ensamble code? I am currently trying to compare a couple of different sdm scripts to look for the best method to fit my data.
Terrific stuff, your images are lovely examples of high maiden old-growth Beech woodland experiencing a phase of canopy collapse. It would be interesting to know whether the abundance of Bracken is due to the dominance of brown earth soils.
how i wish the R script was available
A wonderful talk - I would love to hear how you made that setup perhaps an article in the dipterists forum one day?
Proud moment for me
Mashallah great very much excellent
Proud man❤
❤️
Really enjoyable - I wish I lived nearer the New Forest so I could take part
This recording is important. However, I have felt that my recording have not been welcomed. so have only been submitted to the normal county recorders and and wildlife trusts, where I do most of my collecting. I have assisted at Hoverfly workshops, and lead workshops on other Diptera families. But if I submit Syrphidae the record sets I get a lot of unfair feedback, like that a rare species, and it wont be at that location. so we will reject the other 100s of records. I agree, it shouldn't be there, but it was, and if you don't trust me I have the specimen for you to check. but that doesn't seem to matter. Because of the Diptera families I go for, I am not in Syrphidae collecting locations, mostly damp, dark woodland, and boggy locations,, so my records will be a little "left field"
Great talk, thanks very much for this. I work in Luxembourg at the MNHN and in spring we will be starting fieldwork for a countrywide hoverfly atlas; I will be keeping an eye out for these in particular now :) Please do get in touch if you think it will be helpful.
Tantany Wood is one place worth a check. There are a lot of resent tree falls. For me, it is a magic spot for fungus gnats, but opening up. Most collectors don't have permits to collect in the NF. Just send an email to King's House (formally Queen's House) Lymington. it is really not an issue to get. But a big issue if you don't have one, especially if at Denny wood.
Hi Mark, Sorry only just seeing this. Thanks for the nod about the Tantany Wood, its close to some areas we covered but will check and if not perhaps scope it over the winter. Will also follow up on the permit too. Much appreciated! Thanks Andy
Hi. I have recently been filming flies. What I do is not perfect, as my hands often shake and the image is not steady. Filming is often also difficult when it is windy. I have posted a few videos showcasing flies, if anyone wants to take a look. I plan to post a video at some point either today or tomorrow of a beautiful hoverfly I filmed in Greywell. I have just subscribed to you and I am keen to watch some of this channel's videos and I would be grateful for any constrctive feedback about my fly videos. I have given the title of the series, "Come Fly With Me." Thank you.

Mark Welfare - what a sensible suggestion no food no hoverflies the most important thing is habitat, pointless counting if we learn nothing
