Tom & Tammy’s Off Grid Homestead
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 ก.ค. 2023
Living the dream - Left the city life to build a completely off grid homestead. No cell phone service, No electrical grid, Separated from 21st century living. Within the Mountains at peace with the wilderness and nature. We build a self-sustaining permanent life.
The Sky is falling. Tragedy the Off-Grid Homestead the Starlink cable sheared & a broken water line
Tragedy on the Off-Grid Homestead. Cut off from the outside world and a waterline gets damaged. The Skid Steer Bulldozer attachment struck both the Starlink cable and the cistern water line. With the cistern 200 ft above the home site, the water is flowing out at 2100 gallons per hour. The Starlink cable is made up of a smorgasbord of micro wires. All that can be said is what an obtuse dilemma we have put ourselves in. Off-Grid and our outside connection is severed, and our utility water is compromised.

Access, Road Maintenance Off-Grid Homestead
มุมมอง 19112 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Winter is here; it has been raining. Water is powerful, and a lot of water is a lot more powerful. With a break in the weather, we seize the opportunity to repair issues on the BLM access road. With multiple trips, multiple loads, our equipment and bodies are tested.
D/W Livestock shelter, cold & moisture Off-Grid Homestead
มุมมอง 20919 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
It is winter, rainy season, our goats and sheep are sleeping in a leaky shelter. Condensation is forming on the interior of the roof and water is running under the walls. We must correct this immediately before our animals get sick and have hoof rot. Livestock cannot thrive in a damp cold house. Imagine sleeping in a cold, freezing. wet bed. With a break in the weather we seize the opportunity ...
Drone DJI Crash Off-Grid Homestead

Our DJI Mini 4 Pro strikes a limb on a small oak tree. The drone tumbles out of the air, striking the ground. After receiving, it is noticed that one of the drone's propeller arms is loose. Investigation reveals that the front arm axis hinge shaft is broken. This was a low altitude impact. Question is can it be repaired? Do we need to send it into DJI for repair? Can we repair it ourselves on t...
Rain what to do Off-Grid Homestead
มุมมอง 180วันที่ผ่านมา
That time of year, New Year see us maintaining access to the off-grid homestead. The heaviest rains are at night and in the middle of winter. We also discover signs of gold being washed down our springs, creek and river. We explore the path of the water and see what we have done, trying to tame and live in the environment, Tom & Tammy's Off-Grid Homestead.
A Culvert, installation on the Off-Grid Homestead
มุมมอง 1.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Access to the Off-Grid Homestead is via a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) road. A portion of this non-maintained road crosses our property. Without this BLM road there is no egress or ingress onto our Off-Grid property. BLM does not maintain this road and the winter run-off is washing across the road. Before it is too late, and the road gets washed out. We choose to be proactive, installing a c...

It's time, Clear the mill Off-Grid Homestead
มุมมอง 26821 วันที่ผ่านมา
It has been too long. It is time to clear the mill. Usable lumber? Timbers? Time to get serious? We need timbers to complete our timber frames. Time to build a home on the homestead.
The end, Off-Grid Homestead, complete?

Spent weeks, a year - livestock/Lambs/Sheep. Our new to the homestead post driver cuts the blood, sweat & tears out of the latest accomplishment. Black Belly Sheep & Lamb are free from their stall/pen. For the first time on the Off-Grid Homestead the sheep are grazing, in the sun and breathing in the air of the forest.
Easy Fence Post Driving & Field Fence
มุมมอง 251หลายเดือนก่อน
Off-Grid Homestead by the very nature of the words conjures up the thought of old world doing it the hard way. We have newer to the homestead Black Belly Sheep, and they are pregnant. With one lamb already here, we need to set them free. Not really free, but we do need some fenced pasture to free range on. Hence field fencing and driving fence posts come to the Off-Grid Homestead. Do we accompl...

If a building is not properly flashed, rot will soon follow. Todays' cookie cutter construction and the loss of trade knowledge has shortened the longevity of today's building materials. . "Your videos are really inspirational! You are improving so much in terms of creativity."
Appreciate it! Been a tough year.
wow, that’s a big job. Too bad the speeders didn’t come and help you great work. I think the bigger rock is a great idea. Should slow them down a little bit too.😉
Isn't bad to drive over. Next time, if I do it, there will be speed bumps along the entire route.
Love your dog - big job on the road fixing♥
The road work gets bigger if they are not maintained. With neglect it only gets worse.
Your killing my back watching you use that garden hoe & shovel Tom :) I'd just dump part of the load blade it in the holes, If you dump to much easy to sit in a seat scoop it back up & put it in the trailer, You have to save some energy for milling to build your cabin, We need our exercise but not that kind when you have a machine, Take care save your back"
After two days my traps were muscle sore at the end of the day. Next day I woke up fine. Later in the video I do use the dump, to at least help. Take care Don, watched and commented on your latest video. Thank you for watching.
That air space should help :) That's some heavy 2+2's they should work great 👍, I don't use my table saw anymore since I got my saw mill :)) To bad you had a big log already on your mill, Sharp blade does wonders, off grid always fixing something :) Have a great day"
The problem was that the wood was cut green and then stored outside in the rain. In the video you can see how it was stored. The it continued to wick up the moister.
You are operating the table saw from the wrong side because of not enough space next to the logs, you are binding it up pushing from the wrong side.
Your most likely 100% right.
A new blade makes such a difference definitely two people would be much easier, especially with that length of lumber
Sometimes you get what you wish for. Not a lot of people of an off-grid homestead. How often are we trying to accomplish something and missing that extra set of hands? Way to often.
@ if I had an extra set of hands, I could do double the work easily maybe triple
@@exploringmybackyard you must have been either self-employed, in supervision or a business owner.
@@TomTammyOffGridHomestead you nailed it all 3 lol
@@exploringmybackyard how would I be able to get a trifecta? Because I have been there. Stay warm, stay dry and take care. 👍👍👍
Already chopped a small tree down to retrieve a drone.
Did the drone survive. In this last crash, which was approximately 12ft, I broke the arm pivot hinge. Ordered the part & replaced it myself. Flies like a dream now.
Awesome video for a second I thought that was real lightning lol
Maiden flight after the repair. Inspired by the comparatists and the mysterious fog making people sick. Also had just finished watching the Professor of Rock.
Oh, another CIA drone crash. Time to investigate all these dirty agencies. FBI, did, CIA. These terrorists scams have all the earmarks of these treasonous scoundrels. correction DOD. Edit not working ?
Watch for the blinking lights and beware of the mother ship. Worst of all who knows what will happen once you are abducted in the middle of the night, hopefully you're not sore in the morning. Or are they from China spreading the next pandemic? LOL
Beautiful, love the music!
Was a test flight after the repair, after the crash. 😃
Just about did the same thing today lol
That is the second time. The first time I was trying to get a shot and decided to fly it backwards at altitude (pretty high). Ended up hitting a Western Red Cedar on a mountain side. The drone came down hard. Finally found it in the creek bed. Had to send it in for repair. ☹Wasn't good, cost me $300.00 US. This time I have purchased a new Front Arm Axis Hinge Shaft, I'm going to replace it myself.
@ yeah they’re not cheap. That’s for sure.
Wear your glasses, next time!!!
Yes Hunny.
Good morning wow, you have no shortage of water. Have you ever checked to see what type of quality of quartz you have if you have jewellery grade it could be worth a lot of money. Keeping the water off your road is key have a good weekend.
This time of year, the water seeps right out of the ground. Instead of snow, we get rain at night. This area was part of the old rush starting in 1850. WII put an end to the mining. They used lots of Chinese immigrants to extract the gold. In the forest you can see the miles of swales they dug to divert the creek and piles of river rock stacked up from the rock they removed from the creek bed, to get down to the bed rock. I found two mine shafts which were not closed up, nothing to real see but they did go on for a way. There was a rock crusher further down the creek which got removed and sent up to Canada in the later 1900. Take care, wishing a very productive and prosperous 2025.
@@TomTammyOffGridHomestead pretty cool stuff
Nice tour of your property video :) You should collect buckets of quarts clean them & sell them 👍, But them shovels are going take there toll on your back, Tom just stack it out where you need it to go you have a good bob cat to do the digging :) Have an awesome day"
Looking good, lots of plans and work ahead, I can relate 😊 Take care ✌🏼
Happy New Year
Happy New Year to you, too!
sda
Sorry, meaning?
Nice
Good job Tom & Tammy :) All in a days work & you don't want your road washing away, Great fix 👍, Wishing you both a Happy New Year !
Happy New Year. No work arounds on an Off-Grid Homestead. If you do you get to do it again. Take care Don.
Awesome job the skid steer works well quite a bit of water coming down. I’m assuming that was bags of cement that you put around the culvert. Happy New Year.
Yes, the bags were cement. Was worried that if a heavy truck drove across it. We border BLM (Bureau of Land Management). If the government decides to sell the timber, there could be log trucks. Slim chance but you never know. Take care. It is amazing how the water come out of the ground.
@ yeah that was a good idea for sure. Better safe than sorry. Happy new year.
Nice job!
Thank you hoping your year was fulfilling and 2025 is your best year.
Nice job
Playing in the mud. The pie was under cooked. Take care.
That's pretty cool with the effects with the views 👍, I hope everyone can have a little snow for Christmas day :) God Blees !
No snow in the forecast. Today had a low of 44 F and was in the high 50's F, had scattered showers. Tomorrow, a low of 33 F and 95% chance of rain in the early morning till 7 am-ish, then sunny. Christmas day the temp is supposed to be the same with rain starting that evening. Last year, early this year, we didn't see any real snow until early March. At that point it snowed every night, for about two weeks, and melted off every day. We would wake up and we would have another 4-6 inches of heavy wet snow. Don, God Bless and take care. 🎅🎅🎅
awesome video. I love the effects from my Homestead to yours. I wish you a very merry Christmas and an absolute wonderful new year joy peace prosperity.
And to you also. Merry Christmas 🎅 and a very productive, smooth and joyous New Year 🥳
Merry Christmas
🎅🎅🎅
A lot of jobs done here. Merry Christmas! 🎅
Merry Christmas🎅Sorry, noticed your Santa.
Awesome lumber those logs are beautiful. Looking forward to getting on my mill this spring. If this weather keeps this mild, I might get onto it after Christmas fingers crossed. Cant hook, peavey I like to wish the both of you guys a very merry Christmas
Yep, the blunt one is a cant hook, and the pointed one is a peavey. Look forward to seeing your mill at work. Have a Merry Christmas and take care.
Man you have some beautiful wood there to work with ! Some awesome timbers 👍, You are having beautiful weather there, Watch them saw blades they can hurt even when not on the mill, Have an awesome day
Blades - the teeth are like multiple fishhooks. Take care and have a Merry Christmas. We can say that now in the states. Yep, have a Merry Christmas and be very mindful when working by yourself. Take care.
Good job, with that log placement 💞
Peacocks are telling us, something changed. Brought a few turkeys home…they are great watch dogs!
The Homestead is growing you guys are doing a great job. Have a merry Christmas.
You young folks have been growing quit a homestead 👍, I'm trying to cut back so I can enjoy a little more time on the road :) We got a couple more inches of snow so working on my wood trails now :) Stay warm have an awesome weekend"
Lovely sheep and the goats and birds too☺ Have a great day☺
We work it hard every day. Thank you and take care.
Wow, that was pretty impressive. How fast I put those posts into the ground when you have lots of fencing, it is definitely the way to go looks like.
Yes, I was using a mallet or manual post driver. The manual you had better make sure you are wearing gloves and the mallet once you're getting tired you seem to miss more often. Either way the gas powered is much faster and easier. Much, much faster also. The post puller is a must if you are pulling a post. When we first moved to the homestead I used some t-posts to layout the footing that the Conex boxes are sitting on. After pouring the footings I tried to pull up the posts to no avail. Did not get all the t-posts up until the following spring. Take care, keep driving forward, have a Merry Christmas & God Bless.
@ thank you same to you
That is a lot of work all that fence ! Your new post pounder looks like it works well👍, I put up a couple rolls of that stuff, Didn't take me long to realize I didn't need goats or sheep that bad lol :) have an awesome weekend
Our goat's wander free. They are free ranged and return home every night. We also have no direct neighbors, BLM, forest land and on one side a timber company. The timber company is over the mountain though, so the goats do not travel up there. The bad part will be the butchering. Take care Don, may you have a Merry Christmas.
Wow, that’s some pretty awesome work. I foresee some pretty cool things coming to the Homestead.
Thanks! The Metal brake will be very handy for all sorts of projects.
@ I’m sure I’m looking forward to seeing them
Wow, long trip but that break is well worth it. You can do endless things with that. Stay safe.
That sucks
It cost but it is now replaced. Took a week though and some $$$. Now we are on #3. First one flew into oblivion.
@ That’s funny. I’m on my second one. The first one I flew into a tree and it landed in a lake and I couldn’t find it brand new one day old go figure.
@@exploringmybackyard same here flew up into the gulch. Could never find it. It is on the property though, somewhere. We looked 2 times, all day.
Very good drone video please follow me
Great view till it wasn’t! Sorry about your drone!
We sent it in to DJI for repair.
All kinds of new goodies for the homestead 👍, Yes just nice to get away from it all for a little bit :) Why do we always find things that make more work for us at the homestead lol, I'm sure you have big plans always nice to make our own stuff :) Take care stay warm"
It is the reason we are self-sufficient.😁
U gonna show how it works I’m interested
In a future episode, yes,
I’m not sure what that green thing is for. It looks like a medal bender maybe
