Good video. Thanks for the info
Thanks for the info!! That was my problem as well! Saved me a bunch of time trying to diagnose it myself. Thanks again!
A friend picked up an old 9N that has something stuffed into that tube. I wonder if this is why it was there.
I've had my NAA for 40 years and this is the first time I fully understand what the lever does. Thank you.
Thanks again, but I think the oil pump failed and I might have torched the engine.Weird thing is the left engine is fine with decent compression......??
Each engine has it's own oil pump so If one pump failed the other would still be fine.
Thanks!
Had the exact problem
It's easy to get them turned around.
I came here to see what I needed to drill and I am in shock and confusion of what I am even looking at. Is this a welded up half case? Care to give some back story/ explanation it’s really interesting.
It started out as a complete 4 cylinder VW engine. Here is the playlist for the entire build. th-cam.com/play/PLs63bv1rlJpN9ctLyz8DM3NfqaXIPXxua.html&si=YtgZ158__5Z0scuM
Thank you! always wondered what that was for.
No problem. I wandered what it did for years.
Nice mod ,have you looked into the throttle body failure fix ? Thinking of getting an xr but the failure or repair complexity puts me off.Wondering about carb or injection from another bike ?
Yes, I'm aware of the throttle body problem and so far I haven't had any. I just give it a close inspection anytime I have access to the throttle plate. Building a completely new throttle shaft is doable but it is a lot of work. I haven't looked into different fuel injection systems but there is a Mikuni carb that several people have switched to with really good results. If mine ever breaks I'd make the decision then which way to go. I have to admit though that I really like carbureted bikes.
Helpful video. Thanks. Seems like my c5 is having some issues with this. Looks like a pain taking that dash off 🥴
Honestly compared to some cars I've worked on taking the dash top off of the C5 is easy.
nice download..I have one also, recently purchased, and may have had an oil pump failure, causing right engine to possibly freeze-up...I'm no mechanic, but I want to see if I can manually crank the crankshaft..Where is it, and how would I try to crank it? Should I first add some oil to the cylinders? thanks..
There is a plastic cover on the rear of the engine that covers the driveshaft hub. Remove the cover and try to turn it there. Adding some penetrating oil through the spark plug holes might help it it's stuck. If it had water in the crankcase then the crank will probably be rusted though.
Great video! The only question I have is why is the oil fill on that side? Mine is on opposite side.
The oil fill is on the left side by the oil filter. The cap by the carb is a crankcase vent.
My next project… better be soon too!
i just had this problem but i have no hole with a plug the wrong stator is in it really sent me for a loop
Good day at 2:30 can the gear shifter convert to cable cause I wanna use that on A rotary engine and the engine gonna be in the rear can I use a c7 transaxle for that?
Love it.
Clutch basket & extra plate clutch pack…😊
Great information! Thanks for breaking it down, so it's understandable!
I wanna thank you for a fantastic video series on the C5 Corvette T56 tear down and build. I just finished up mine last night. I Purchased all the special tools for the T56 and a Chevy Factory Manual for my build BUT being Old school I still like to be shown how too first before attempting the job by myself I Tore down and built my Trans following along with you thank you again for a Great video series.
Happy it helped.
Do you think this would fix my problem? My AC blows ice cold and my heat blows hot but they don't blow hard. It also seems like I still get fumes in my car from other cars.
Since the hot and cold are working properly it doesn't sound like a blend door problem. I'd take a look at the blower fan and make sure it's spinning fast and not clogged with debris.
@xpsgarage It sounds like it does but I'll find out when I pull the dash. Thank you
@@endwolf103 The fan comes out the bottom and is fairly easy to get to so I would check it first. It could be full of debris which will keep it from moving air.
@xpsgarage Makes sense since the car doesn't have a cabin air filter. Gotta get it figured out before next summer. Vegas summer with no AC is terrible
That water pump looks really good on there. Nice video..I have always enjoyed your videos on the 8N….AND, as I get older I enjoy watching someone else doing the work. I wish my 8N had a side mount distributor and an easy way to pull the hood with a front loader and its framework.
Thank you. I still enjoy the work which is a good thing. I have plenty of it. I've never worked on one with the front mount distributor but it does look less user friendly than the side mount. An easier way to pull the hood would be great also.
i use only DoubleHH pads, I'm thinking of going to Storz discs which are larger so require special hangers...
The Storz discs look good and the extra diameter should help.
Just FYI, the delivery courier has absolutely nothing to do with filling a damage claim. Couriers aren’t going to wait for you to unpack and inspect your delivery. They have over 100 stops a day to make, it would be absolute chaos if they had to wait for every customer to act like it’s Christmas morning. Your ire needs to be directed at the shipper for the packaging. I would be highly irritated with ANYONE who shipped critical parts in a cardboard box like that. Engines and engine components should be crated in a wooden box, anything less is completely unacceptable. It’s not FedEx fault that the shipper sent your cylinders in a bubble gum wrapper. FedEx doesn’t pack the items, they just move it from one place to another. Yes, I work for FedEx, and I get sick of people for blaming FedEx for damaging product that we had nothing to do with packaging.
FYI, I don't intend to make anybody wait like Christmas morning but if the FedEx guy is handing me the package and it's obviously screwed then I'm handing it right back and refusing delivery. Then the seller can fight with FedEx about whether it was poor packing or rough handling. In this case it was definitely poor packaging but I've received numerous items that were packed well but still looked like they had been run over with the truck.
@@xpsgarage you can deny anything you want, it doesn’t change the claim process
I think I understand the claim process, but if I don't accept it because it's damaged then the seller has to do it not me and if it was obviously poor packaging that should be on the seller anyway.
I have seen other plan called better half vw where the builder keep vw case and cut internal parts to half and cover unwanted holes with thin plate , i wonder if any body try it? From where you get the stroke parts
There are lots of the better half VW engines flying. Search for Legal Eagle aircraft since that's what most of them have. It would definitely be an easier way to build the engine since it eliminates the magnesium welding and the extra cutting plus it has more oil capacity for the engine. I went with the cut case Hummel version because it fits better in the Ultracruiser I'm building. The parts in this video are from Scott Casler at www.hummelengines.com/
I cant find your brake line reroute vid - which one is it? In the middle of removing my diff as we speak, your vids are great.

@@xpsgarage I eventually found it. Thanks again. Making this a breeze so far.
Mineral Spirits or 3M Adhesive remover spray works well for the goo too. The new Windshield 3M butyl stuff works phenomenal AND if you freeze it first it's easier to handle.
I really should have bought a new pack of sealant. The stuff I was using was old enough to buy beer but it still worked.
Excellent‼️
Congratulations! Can’t wait to keep watching your videos!
Thanks, I should have more out soon.
Good info. I see your 1541 & 1571's back there.
Yes, I've got the 1541 hooked to my PC so I can download programs off the web and put them on 5.25" floppies. The 1571s are hooked to the C128. Right now I've got the 1802 monitor on the bench getting new capacitors. I might have too many hobbies. LOL
@@xpsgarage Hello, I had a mountain of 8-Bits. VIC-20 first, TS1000 +16K 2nd. My C128-1571 w/ GEOS was my daily driver before I went PC. TRS-80 Mod III & IV-P, Atari 400 & 800XL, Apple ][ e enhanced, Kaypro, XT compatibles, etc. Most bought at thrift stores & Salvation Army auctions. Sold everything except the ZX81 stuff when I moved to Peru in June 1996. Sad. Now I find myself buying "vintage" 8-bits again. SD cards make it all vialble again. What's old is now new. Your Half-VW stuff is very informative. Cutting the case and welding magnesium is a challenging process. Hobbies are indispensible for us humans because it keeps our hand-eye coordination sharp, a feature of all hobbies and all that is fun, hands-on, IMHO.
@@JaViDsgn I had a nice C64 setup when I was a kid but got rid of it all thinking I'd never want to use it again. I agree that we need hobbies, I don't like to sit around much.

@xpsgarage OK Thank you. It's literally the most random thing to run into while I'm trying to rebuild my Transmission.
I just swapped pumps onto a junk yard pull out. Thanks for this video. I'm going to check mine in the morning before I reinstall it and waste all that time. Thanks XP
I wish I had one of them sherman transmissions for my 8N but I just can't imagine rolling down the road in 4 high. the standard 4th gear is scary fast for that tractor as it is.
The Sherman trans are handy. I run around town in 4 hi all the time. My steering and brakes are good though. If they weren't I imagine it would be scary.
Hi! This is a great job! CAn you say me which set of 1/2vw conversion plans did you use ? Best regards
I used the plans from Scott Casler at Hummel Engines. www.hummelengines.com/
I recommend you replace those 5/8’’ balls if they are pitted or have flat spots before they create a groove in the conical part. They are dirt cheap, easy to find
Good advice. I don't remember there being any problems with mine.
Greate Could you please put all 1/2 vw build videos in one play list . It will be easy for subscriber to follow the steps 🤙
Great idea. I just got it organized into one playlist.
54x22 @ 3100 is 37.8 hp with 219 lbs thrust at 64.5 mph If all that is correct it will fly
That sounds great to me! Thanks for running the numbers.
I would like to build this engine. What plans should i use and where can I get them?
The plans I used were from Scott Casler at Hummel Engines. www.hummelengines.com/
You can also get a different version of 1/2 VW plans, that doesn't require cutting the case, from here. legaleagleairplane.com/
My Scott Casler instructions says set idle at 1000 rpm’s. 😊
1000 sounds good to me. 800 seemed a little on the slow and shaky side.
3100 rpm sounds pretty good. It should pick up a little more as the engine loosens up.
I was happy with it.
Thanks for the great videos
On the road but I'll look at it complete later today
The cylinders should be lapped into both the case and head. That guarantees a good seal.
Prop hub bolt torque is 65 lb/ft according to my Scott Casler instructions.
Excellent. Thank you!
I guessed pretty close at 70.
It seems there would be a significant oil leak at the camshaft since there is no end cap.
Outstanding. Will add this to my to-do list along with upgrades from points ignition to modern
I like the oil filter but haven't heard much good about replacing the points with electronic ignition.
There is no news by now, the brazilian Gurgel BR 800 car were powered by a 800 cc 1/2 VW engine in Brazil some 30 years ago... I've attempted to buy an used one to put it on a Demoiselle ultralight bamboo project...
I think he's going to need a bit more power if he wants to get the tractor off the ground......
LOL
how many miles on this
I think it had a little over 100k.
