We are a family who transplanted from California to North Idaho in 2018 and haven’t looked back. I’m a white collar man who is blue collar at heart. My sweet wife is a stay at home, home schooling mom with a green thumb. We’re learning and teaching garden construction and development, wood working, gardening, quilting, and marriage and family wisdom. We are building our lives here both literally and figuratively. We welcome you to look into our lives and maybe learn from our success and our failures.
BARNWOOD BEAUTY-WOW-#berghorst_country_lving #oldworldstyle #barnwood
I wanted to try my hand at creating something with Barnwood. I realized after purchasing the wood from a local dealer that I didn’t have enough to create a table and since this was my first go with Barnwood, I didn’t want to try to match it with wood from a different barn. Probably would’ve been OK but like I said, this is my first time playing with Barnwood. The project was more about familiarizing myself with the material than it was creating something super expensive. I think it came out OK but I don’t know what it should be. Should it be a coffee table or a sitting bench for an entrance to a house or cabin? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts

How to Protect a Greenhouse from Winter Snow
The way you navigate through the wilderness is impressive
If your wooden posts are in contact with ground, then the concrete does nothing except holding the post laterally. Something that simple compacted crushed stone can do perfectly. You better pour some concrete in the hole, let it cure. Then do all the rest. The concrete pad at the bottom will act as a spread footing (spreading the loads of the post on a bigger surface). And the ultimate setup is with no wood buried. So full concrete base (like in a sonotube) then you anchor the wooden post on it.
Looks great man!
Cool project. I bet it would cost about 1500 nowadays
Thanks..yeah, quite possibly.
Great video. Very useful
Thanks👍🏼
Thank this the perfect video I need for my hill
Glad it helped
🍅🍅🍅Look wonderful! 🌶🫑🌶
Thanks👍🏼
I like your method but do you have a model to show how to have a platform in the middle of the stairway and then more stairs going down?
Good question I didn’t have a need for a platform so I never had to wrestle that out in my mind. Sorry. I suppose if I were to add a platform, I would have the posts placed close to the bottom step and 2 placed posts out as far as your platform would go (all concreted in of course) and have level horizontal joints, so to speak. Build platform on that and have handrails level out over platform and then continue steps down like in the video. Hope this helps 😁
Checking in 3y later were you able to keep animals out? Do you have any updates on pros and cons?
Hi there Yes, it keeps almost all animals out. We do have to add netting to the blueberries because we had some quail find their way in and enjoyed a feast a couple of years ago. We are very happy with it but have to be careful in winter if snow is slushy wet. Had a cave in. Keeping up with berries is an enormous task as they creep under the boxes.
Question... why did you only use pressure treated wood on the treads and posts?
Please seal that particle board. Giving me the heebi-geebies
😆 typically, I would but I see it as a temporary situation anyway
Best video for enclosed veggie garden but small rodents will go through chicken to eat your veggies, I suggest ½ inch 19 gauge mesh wire.
Retired elementary school teacher here. It was absolutely heartwarming watching you work together and treating that child with such love. He will grow into a better man because of it.
Thank you
This is a GOOD dad. Reminds me of working with my own dad back in the 50s & 60s. Still miss him.
I miss my dad too
Great video and nice job on the stairs. I’m just wondering however why you didn’t use pressure treated wood other than for your posts?
The steps are pressure treated. The stringers are not. The stringers are up off the ground and never have any moisture stay on them for long so I figured maintaining them with linseed oil would be sufficient. It’s been nearly 3 years and still super solid. Thanks for your comments.
Awesome! I am going to recruit my granddaughter to help! Nice job men!!!!❤
this has helped me so much! Building this weekend
Glad it helped you I like seeing pics of the finished stairs👍🏼
Looks great. That is a lot of work 😢
This video is amazing. Thank you so much, I'm halfway through this project at home in Cairns, Australia. Tomorrow cutting the stringers. Appreciate you and your son for helping me!
You’re very welcome. Would love to see pics when you’re finished 👍🏼
Really great video! Thanks so much for posting. We have a hillside garden here in the UK and need a few sets of steps. This has inspired me to get on with it. You helper is the best! He's such a great help and so lucky to have you showing him the ropes, along with a practical education too. Great team work 👍 Where in north Idaho are you based? We have friends in Sandpoint that we have visited a few times.
We are in Coeur d’Alene. About a 45-60 minute drive south of Sandpoint. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. He is a great kid.
A lovely part of the world you live in. Hope to get back there soon. Best wishes to you and your family! Good luck with future projects.
Good job
Great video with you and your son!!
Thank you
Not sure where to draw the initial line. I only saw you do it once at 2:15 ish at the bottom step, but then at 3:12 it looks like it’s from the top step?? Is the line drawn initially along the posts???
No, the line at 3:12 is the only reference line that is needed and is from the bottom not the top. Hope this helps. If not, let me know👍🏼
You can kind of see where I started the line on the board when looking at the video at 3:12. Just make that first horizontal level line at the lowest point that you can and go from there
All the work that you do to set up the stringer boards, and level them at the post is to get that one reference line at the bottom that you see at the 2:15 minute mark. Once you have that reference line, then you can extrapolate the rest of the steps with the jig that I show you.
@@berghorstcountryliving7098 thanks. I’ll have to look harder. I did try pausing and zooming to no avail. I wound up buying a stepper from HD and traced, but thanks for the videos !
@@berghorstcountryliving7098I also couldn’t see how you were setting the level and drawing, I’ll keep rewinding till I get it. Thanks again
I'm aiming to do a project just like this in my back yard next to our terraced garden. You answered all of my questions. Thanks!
I hope it goes very well for you. God bless you
Exactly the idea I needed, great job, love that your teaching and spending time with your son
Thank you
Does the ground not freeze in North Idaho? Won't the frost heave push those posts out concrete and all?
It has been almost 3 years and it is still solid as a rock👍🏼 It hasn’t shifted a centimeter
What zone are you in? Im considering this method in zone 5. But im planning to winter them on the ground in straw for insulation.
We are in growing zone 6, I believe
Love family projects like this! I won’t keep doing it by myself from now on, definitely deprives the kids from a learning experience.
Looks great 💯 😃!!!!!
Thank you
You are gonna need a mini split. I went through a similar situation. I thought an electric heater would be enough for my 24x36 pole barn. I had spray foam insulation like yours. I ended up buying Mr.Cool DIY mini split rated for the square footage of my shop and it heats it up in about 20 min easy. The electric bill hardly went up as well.
Thanks for that information. I considered a mini split with two stations. One for my man cave and one for the shop. I realize now as well that the electricity bill doesn’t like it either.😁
You have a great son there to help you out while you teach him valuable life skills. My son's would be moping around waiting to get back to their computer games : (
Oh, I would say that things aren’t always perfect😁 I definitely have to contend with the video game systems at times.
I plan on doing exactly this. Not as long thank God. Couple things I noticed. Use self tapping exterior torx screws. Will save you the drilling. The other thing was that sheared off screw. I would have taken that out with vice grips and reused the hole. Great job, saving this for my job!
Thanks for the input. Hope the video is helpful for you.
I was surprised to see you used only 2 stringers, I believe 3 are required for 36" stairs.
I don’t know about all the requirements. But I do know that it’s been two years and it’s solid as a rock.😁👍🏼
Cutest kid ever!!!!!!!
This is so cool
Hi :)
Hi
Loved watching this project. You've got an great carpenter helping out!
Thank you. Yes, he is a great helper.
Wow, I really enjoyed your video! A blessing for her and truly a blessing for you guys as well. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you for watching I really appreciate your comments
KFC 🍟➕🍔➕🍗for the win
I used to by my dads helper and miss every second of it. I’m here now watching this because he’s gone, thank you.
that first breaker you showed would have given you 0 volts since both poles are on the same 120v phase
I don’t think those screws you have into the posts will be strong enough over time
Yeah, maybe not. If it looks like it starts to fail, I can always use more or different ones. It’s been a couple years now, and the stairs are solid as a rock.
Thanks!
Love everything about the work you and your son did together. Keep the videos coming
I love the relationship you have with your son. I wish I had someone like you around when I was a kid. Trust me, it means the world to him especially when he grows to become a man. Also, love the project.
Thank you
I love ths
Wow this is so good
Love this... your son is amazing.... your theory is in check😊
I agree. He’s a good kid. Thanks
