The home of outdated and pixelated simulation software.
Gunship 2000 EGA - The LOST release!
Yes folks, you read it here first. This is the ultra-rare, impossible to find version of Gunship 2000, from beyond the moon! Coming to you live in 16 color hypnovision, this is a first in many ways. Very few people know of its existence at all, and this version never even found its way online in either official or pirate form! The few who possess it has for years guarded it with their life. There are some few screenshots on MobyGames, and until now not a single video existed to document it. But now this long lost treasure has officially been found and rescued from a slow, painful and bitrot related death in its floppy disk cage. The bird is free, and can soon spread its wings among the fans who appreciate it.
Gunship 2000 EGA was released in 1991 along with its VGA brother but seems to have soon been forgotten and fallen into obscurity. If not for the fact that I found a patch for it in MicroProse's old FTP dump (which I have applied to the version in the video), I would probably not have been aware myself. After looking for this for 10 long years, fate happened to finally intervene and leave a working copy in our nest of preservation!
This release is similar to F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0 EGA in that it has a longer version number, namely 1469.01. With MicroProse's official patch it can be updated to 1469.02. I am not aware of any more updates. A very interesting fact is that the update contains a read.me file that is essentially that of VGA version 469.06! This leads me to believe that changes in version 1469.2 of EGA may mirror those of VGA version. If anyone knows of any more, undocumented updates, please leave a comment.
The video itself is just a single night mission to show off the look of the game, I did not do especially good. I used a joystick but was all over the place in my Cobra. After taking some flak, I decided to RTB asap. More videos to come, to showcase other times of day and choppers.
Most importantly, thank you so much Krishty (the TAW king) for being such a kind soul, taking care of all logistics and diskette rescue!! YOU made this happen!! :)

Showcase #3 of an upcoming mod for F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0. North Cape is now a snow landscape, instead of eternal summertime green. And with the new dusk/dawn transition changes, we also get a realistic (for the area) dark, cold and foggy dawn! Brrrr... Easy difficulty, but a nice dawn mission flight. Early morning in Northern Norway is dark at this hour. As you can see you need to watch ou...

Wow such a find, excellent work. For preservation purposes maybe upload it to the Internet Archive? 😀👍
We'll see what Santa has in his bag. ;)
I bought a copy of this once a while back. Despite my complaints otherwise, the seller granted no feasibility to the fact that the disks were conspicuously absent. Just one of the occasional issues we collectors have to deal with.
Yeah, actually I experienced the same this summer. Box said EGA, but in it were 6 floppys worth of VGA.
very very cool surprise!
YOU FOUND IT?!?! AWESOME.
I'd also like to request a download link, please. I want to keep a copy for posterity.
Holy hell.
And cow.
wow I didn't know it exist! Could you share the link? I'd like to play it too!
Patience my friend, X-Mas is soon!
Post it somewhere for download. 😉
The Holy Gail has been found! Nice vid as always.
Thanks a lot!
If I want a challenge with finesse, I fly F-19. If I want to go out and have fun blowing things up, F-15 II is among my favorites. If I want to try realistically immersing in a Cold War-style surgical strike, F-117A has that covered. I may never stop being fascinated by how much more interesting a weapons platform the assumed F-19 would've been had it been real. One time the cadets in my Civil Air Patrol squadron were tasked with designing new fighters as an aerospace education exercise; the two results were a dedicated air superiority master something like the F-14 Super Tomcat, the other a multipurpose stealth type which remarkably matched the F-19. As Red Storm Rising (the novel) and F-19 Stealth Fighter show, its better payload and performance comes at some cost of stealth which would have it suffering considerable casualties in wartime airspace (contrast with how the sacrifice-everything-for-stealth F-117 performed in the Gulf War).
Absolutely agree! Fascinating, that you guys came up with two very relevant concepts! Seeing as the Super Tomcat was a potential new development for real! The novel part about the F-19 was very exciting for those reasons you describe there, it being more vulnerable. It is my favorite aircraft that never existed :D
The biggest failing [not at all your fault], like with F-19, is restriction to 16 colors at a time (unlike F-19, RSR doesn't appear to have taken advantage of greater palette range under the VGA setting). That, and the fact that it's the only version stock without on-disk copy protection, is why I gravitate towards the Amiga port. All PC copies out there are either cracked like this one or in a format unusable with DOSBox & PCem. I still own my original copies with keyboard overlays. Eventually there would be no need for them as functions could be memorized after sufficient experience, yet I still appreciate them as a small addition to the immersion factor: one would be expected to learn the functions in training, then operate them accordingly without such aids in the real world (for security purposes, special controls in military hardware are unlabeled). That the icons match those in the manual reinforced this, as did the nomenclature for documentation in early MicroProse simulations being numbered similarly to DoD publications.
I agree with the first point, RSR for DOS could easily have looked as good as the Amiga version under VGA. Or at least have gotten an overhaul patch later. I have tried to remedy this here, making the action cutscene graphics more like the Amiga. I used to prefer the Amiga version too, bc of the graphics, but now that I can improve the DOS control screen I prefer that. The Amiga version if not easy to hack (at least for me). On the topic of the PC version, all versions of RSR runs fine in DOSbox. The original uncracked versions are easy to find, just install from original disk images (in fact, just extract the contents of said images straight into a dosbox folder). To play the original versions you need to set DOSbox cpu to 386_prefetch. Or, you can use the official MPS fast CPU update files released in the 90s. Then you can use 486 or pentium setting in dosbox.
Putting the "Cold" in Cold War; for best results wear a complete set of USAF-issue N-series layers in your virtual cockpit.
Hahahaha!
Cool! Any info about this?
I am a bit on the backfoot when it comes to updating, uploading and making website pages for my mods, due to an exhaustive house move, but I'll do my best to proceed the coming month :)
Awesome winter palette! It really conveys a foggy arctic day. I feel cold just looking at it!
Now THAT'S a night mission! It makes a whole lot more sense now how you can sneak by enemy defenses and air patrols at close distances. On a related note, would it be possible to add stars to the night sky, or is that beyond the game's limitations?
I am glad you like it! Unfortunately, I cannot add anything like that. The sky is simply a single color in lower detail modes, or simple gradients filling the screen in high detail mode.
This is fantastic looking work. All the new colours are amazing. Cant wait to give this a go!
I loved the winter colours, awesome!
Looks great - when is the release planned?
Some few issues to sort, then make the relevant webpages for it :)
Awesome! 👏 A christmas gift maybe? ;)
@@314159265mangler Oh yeah, at the latest ;) Hopefully before.
I really wish it was possible to eliminate from the hud display those indications from radars and/or enemy airplane moving. It is in PFS, F15SE2 and In F-117A

Ah, cool, but this is possible in the stock game, if you choose MT-32. But you must either use MUNT or dosbox SVN Daum, for which you only need the ROMs. :)

@@pixelwings821 Labor of love, and it shows. Hope you didn't pay too much for acquiring that rare Fleet Defender strategy guide; I had to be patient and...ahem...strategic over years to finally get mine, but the full campaign walkthrough for Gold was worth it. There are those of us who are fans enough that owning the actual physical item is the only way, but at all levels we're thankful to people like you who contribute to the preservation effort.
@@BaronSFel001 Thanks for the kind words, that means a lot :) Well it was expensive enough, that is for sure. But it needs to be out there and available. And it is always nice to own these MicroProse rarities.
Wow I love it, I want it.
Again this looks great with pith black night. But I have one question - any reason the flight path marker on hte HUD is colored red? Looks kind of weird IMHO.
I can change that in 3 seconds. But the reason for that choice is that it does not change colors itself, and so I had to choose something that stays equally visible during both day and night. But it is not set in stone as far as I am concerned. The mod is not done yet, some few more kinks to iron out.
@@pixelwings821 green and white HUD default colours work for nights. For the night you may improve the green colour and do it brigther . For the day, you could remove the white colour and change it totally to a new one like dark green, black, or maybe a dark red.
@@LiquidProj3ct Well the HUD green is improved here to a softer green of desaturated shade, that I feel looks more like the proper thing. You don't want harsh and hard signal colors at night, rather those that are visible but easy on the eye. I already tried dark green for day and it does not look so good. Anyhow, I bet everyone has an own preference for color. But I cannot satisfy every soul in that regard. In the end it is going to be after my own preference. :)
Really looking forward for this mod. Great job PixelWings!
I love realistic or detailed pixel arts good work ❤
Looks fantastic.
Looks Great!
Top notch work, mate!
Thanks my friend!
trying the game out my first time. Graphics look so muddy, Wish they used the Red Baron 3d engine. Is your goal eventually to make the game look less muddy?
I guess you mean low resolution? Red Baron 3D came much later, Fleet Defender is based on early 90s PC specs and tech, although they initially plan for 640x400/480. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do with the low resolution.
I see that this is version is lacking that annoying radar circles about enemy emissions, and the informations about fighter taking off and landing that plagues both F-117 and F-15SE 2 in amiga and PC VGA versions. I wish there was a way to remove those
I think they are present here as well? Look from around the 3 minute mark. Radars give alerts. That said, we can look into disabling those later :)
@@pixelwings821 That would be an awesome mod
Damn, always great to see these classic games being kept alive! Think you could do it to A-10 Cuba! next?
A-10 Cuba, interesting sim -what would you most like to see modded in it? Atm, I have some others that needs finishing, also some previous requests to look into, but maybe in the future :)
@@pixelwings821 Its developer, Eric Parker, actually took a flight model from a mainframe and scaled it down so that it could be run on home computers of the time. The result was a smooth, natural-feeling flight simulation that felt like nothing else at the time, and like nothing to this day dare I say. I don't know if you played it at your time; it's quite possibly my favorite game, period. That said, I don't know what could be feasible in terms of modding. I'd love to fly some of the other aircraft the game has such as the F-16 or Mig-29. I've actually looked into learning decompilation tools so I could, say, give it a high-resolution mode or come up with a mission editor, but it's a massive undertaking for somebody who's not a real programmer. Sorry for rambling ;)
@@rinsatomi9527 Cool, I didn't know that about it. But yes indeed, I did play the demo of it when it came out, unfortunately never the full version. Yeah, to give it higher resolution and things like that, I'd say you need to decompile it or find the source code. While I have been able to change a lot including certain mechanics by hex editing in various games, those more advanced features are beyond me as well atm. But, we can always learn ;)
INSANE work, never thought I'd see di's apache modded to have a (debatably) better cockpit graphic Say, is there a possibility in the cards to mod falcon 3.0? I remember the demo cockpit/pallete looked much more better and clean than what we got in the retail release.
Thanks for the kind words! If I have learned anything by now, it is that anything is possible! If we are dedicated :) Interesting, I will have to look up those early preview shots. What bothers me most about Falcon 3.0 is that it has only 1 MFD, but unsure how much I can do with that.
@@pixelwings821 The F18 has two MFD panel, perhaps that could be a starting point...
@@Daimo83 Ah good point, I forgot that exists. It can be for graphics, though it will probably be tightly integrated to the core plane avionic code.
@@pixelwings821 After what you did to F19 you're the cut and shut mod man! I have faith!
Incredible work, it's perfect! Where can we download?
My website lags a bit behind the modding lately, but DI Apache and the mod will be the next page I make there -with download :)
@@pixelwings821 I'm looking forward to it! Thanks.
This is so cool! I've never played much of this game (nor Hind) because the sounds annoyed me after a short while
Thanks! Same experience here. Have you played iF-16? That voice acting is just terrible. Will have to remedy that, which means re-recording every phrase, lol.
@@pixelwings821 No, I haven't played that one.
I play this regularly using the HATARI emulator, but was never able to get the PC version running reliably. The game crashes for me when you reach the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. I suspect that this is some form of copy protection, but don't know how to get around it.
Cool, personally I also like the C64 edition a lot. There is also an issue with the different versions having bugs, iirc. This last release does not suffer from crash.
I wonder if the vga mod is possible in DI's F-16 Combat Pilot. The PC version looks pale compared to the Amiga despite the former is notoriously difficult to play due to insane computer AI. The cokcpit instruments in both version are superb.
I love that the Amiga was ahead of the PC - for a few short years anyway.
Well, I contemplated looking into it. Maybe in the future! I have started modding iF-16 from DI though. Will give it the same kind of overhaul as Apache.
Gave up on the ST version because the AI was too hard - maybe I'll look into the PC version instead...
Well done I had this one, not Janes. Does it work in 640x480?
Thanks, I have not made new struts for the 640x480 version yet, but that can be done.
@@pixelwings821 before you do, should it not have a crossbar through the middle? Do you think it's possible to remove the clock and compass - they're redundant anyway but I realise the game might not draw the screen that far down?
@@Daimo83 I have in fact been working on exactly that. I can indeed have the 3D view extended further down, but more research is needed on drawing the middle overlay larger. About the crossbar, no unfortunately I cannot do it as the left and right struts are individual overlays, and do not touch each other. Also, the HUD takes that space. If I manage to find the bytes controlling the overlay extents, then maybe.
@@pixelwings821 well no complaints here either way. You are a treasure for these mods!
@@Daimo83 Thanks a lot for those kind words :)
FWIW, if you get visually ID'd, you should make it a practice to kill whatever saw you. In Cold War mode, you lose a ton of points when that happens.
This looks awesome! Your dedication to modding these venerable games warms this retro flight sim fan's heart.
Feedback like that makes it all worth it! :) Thank you!
