    Hi. Loving your video work! My name is Joel, I live just over in Hereford and have a Solex 3800 circa 1967. I can’t get the engine to start for love nor money and was wondering if you’d take a look some time? I can a van and can pootle over to Malvern if you’re interested in whacking it with some spanner’s. Thank you.

      Hi - thanks for your kind comment! Your first port of call should be Velosolexclubuk (dot com) and join up; You'll find a Guide to Adjustments and Starting a Reluctant Engine there plus specialists far far better than me (as you can see by the videos!). There is a list of things you'll need to check eg blocked jet, blocked filters, no spark etc etc and it's easy to do. Have a go at that and see how you get on!

      Hi James - I'm considering it! You need far better kit to video these days than I had when doing the above videos; it's amazing how much it takes over your life too - even with a Moped channel! Anything you do on the moped has to be filmed and you feel guilty if you don't! My 5000 is still going strong and is used to commute these days. Points ignition faultless! Thanks so much for commenting.

    • @mopedinthemalverns6661
      @mopedinthemalverns6661 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Timing wouldn't be the issue there, more like the speed of engine turn. If you've got electronic ignition you need to spin the engine very fast. I'd post your problem on the Velosolex club uk forum and you'll get masses of brilliant advice. Be very careful starting engine with a drill - it's quite dangerous. BEst of luck.

    I've just bought a Velosolex 5000 in the same colour. I'm in the process of jumping through the hoops required to get it road registered. On mine the right handlebar grip turns, like a twist throttle, but has absolutely no impact on engine speed.

      Good for you Superbracey! Best of luck with that hoop-jumping. Your twist grip is probably missing the 'Cursor' which is something I had to fit to mine. It slots into part of the plastic grip and pulls the throttle cable when you twist. Join Velosolexclubuk for help on this. I bought one and worked out how it fitted with some head-scratching. Do feel free to subscribe (ahem) so I can afford my second yacht on my TH-cam earnings (zero). Thanks for comment - Dave

      @mopedinthemalverns6661 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomaspalmer3923 Well now I know how easy it is to file down the key and what was actually involved in having the flywheel re-cut I wouldn't send it off again. You just need a bit of key metal and a tiny file. The key of the Solex is only to position the flywheel not hold it in place - that's the job of the tapered crankshaft and a lot of torque in tightening it down. Like all things with the Solex - anything you can do yourself will be better than the professionals. I've done the coil now so missed the cnance to video it. I used a soldering iron to cut the plastic off....

    • @thomaspalmer3923
      @thomaspalmer3923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree and well done.I think my difficulty would be cutting a slot in the flywheel. One "expert told me that the flywheel would fall off without the key" and this is rubbish as you say.My bike has the 41mm barrel,sportds exhaust and the 9mm carb with adjustable nozzle.With the extra revs the engine lifting lever sheared off near its base with the extra vibration.Van den Solex does a much more substantial lifter but it is not suited to the decompressor on mine as it is a Hungarian Impex.

      Hi - sorry for late reply - it didn't come up on my notifications. If it's not an Atom it won't work at all because of the special multiple magnets the solex flywheel uses. If it is an Atom, the only things that can cause it to go wrong are: Flywheel 'key' missing which will ruing the timing / duff coil / duff HT lead / duff or wrong spark plug / a loss of continuity between all of these things. Also make sure you check your Atom is properly grounded with an extra wire to the frame. Hope that helps!

      @@mopedinthemalverns6661 Nope. Long gone. Saw them new, in black paint, in France in '74. Fell in love. My California model was blue. I'm in the process of making a front drive electric bike with 20" wheels. Should be kinda fun. Loved my Solex. It was fun on dirt paths. The two-wheel-drive gave it good handling. French engineers are so smart. It's a pity that Americans don't appreciate them.

    You forget to smell anything. I was particularly curious about the new pedals.

      @mopedinthemalverns6661 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear MG Martin - I was indeed remiss in neglecting to smell the pedals on camera. They smelled lovely - all new and rubbery. The Solex itself stinks of petrol however which masks any new odours.I will introduce more olfactory content in future videos just for you and for people around the world who enjoy the smell of components. A much sidelined aspect of moped restoration.

    Great vlog. I love your moped, I had a BSA Bantam D1 in the past which I loved riding around my local area at the time. I wouldn't worry about the cyclist overtaking I've had someone pushing a pram over take me. keep up the good work.

      Superb! A pram! That must have been a special moment. How very kind of you to post on my video - yes I'll keep up the videos and there are already a few episodes 'in the can' and waiting to be edited. Some technical (like your servicing vid), some historical (like the Narnia gas-lamp connection...) and some to do with the countryside and its produce (cider orchard vid coming up). Again - really appreciate your time in commenting Sasha. Hope your boat is dry in all this rain. My parents had a GRP canal /river boat when I was growing up - a Norman 32. I loved the canals and the holidays we had.
