286. Life Skills You Have To Teach Your Homeschool Child This Year: Ditch The Books And Add These!
What if homeschool is also about learning how to navigate the world? I think many families are starting to realize this.
Sure, there is much to gain from curriculum, but kids are so open to learning and we can open the world to them by being intentional about teaching them life skills.
Most of us went to school and our days were filled up for all of those formative years. And then, poof...we were expected to navigate the real world. I remember feeling lost in so many areas because I hadn't been fully prepared for life out on my own.
But, as homeschool parents, we can use these years and the time we have with our children at home to teach them the ins and outs of of life.
I've got a jam-packed episode for you today. Grab a pen and paper and get ready to take some quick notes!

    Tests are trash! Haha but as I’m preparing for a final for an undergrad class tonight, tests are an unfortunately essential part of higher academia. Once my kids are in high school I’ll teach them so they know the subject and then I’ll separately teach them how some classes are completely do this worksheet and pull the answers from this chapter and then do this test. I might make test taking a whole class because most of my college classes have nothing to do with learning but with getting good grades on homework and tests. It’s pretty obnoxious honestly.

      That's a great plan! And definitely something that kids need to be prepared for if they're on a college track. Have you found that college students use AI for note taking and test prep? I am curious as to how AI changes higher education.

    I keep getting asked what about socialization, when I tell people that my husband and I are homeschooling our son which is only 2 years old right now so yeah we have time but yet they are scared that he's not going to be socialized which there is so many ways to give him socialization opportunities

    • @LittlebyLittleHomeschool
      @LittlebyLittleHomeschool 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The socialization is usually the first words out of someone's mouth. And it's almost laughable as most homeschoolers have to say no to activities, so they can actually get some curriculum done and a little quiet time in their lives. The root is the misconception about "socialization." It's crazy how much the school systems has closed the general public's minds. I did do an episode all about this topic. You might find it helpful for your own concerns, but also to know how to approach this topic with others. {Also, I love that you already know you want to homeschool him!} podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/15-homeschooling-and-the-concern-about-socialization/id1607943103?i=1000553287128

I have two daughters also the oldest one is 17yrs old and she just graduated from high-school equivalent (used to be called GED) and my other daughter will be 15yrs old in a couple months but she lives with her dad in a different state and goes to public school. There are so many reasons why, though we are choosing to homeschool our son, and personally, I feel like this is what we are supposed to do for him and I can't wait to start I know I have to start small and slow with teaching him but we are already work with him on his abcs and coloring and reading books to him and he seems to really enjoy it he likes learning and his dad and I love it ❤️

    You want to talk about family vacations during the school year, get a load of this doosy: Back in April of 2015, there was a guy right here in the Philadelphia area who took his two kids out of school to Boston because he was running in the Boston Marathon. Then all of a sudden, he gets a letter from the school's principal saying that it was an unexcused absence. Plus, it violated the state's mandatory school attendance laws. He then wrote the principal back, and he said that his kids learned more in the five days that they were in Boston than they would have sitting inside of a classroom. Plus, he would do it again if he had to.

    • @LittlebyLittleHomeschool
      @LittlebyLittleHomeschool 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow! And that guy is right! Boston is amazing for so many learning experiences, especially a ton of history. Thanks for sharing this story!

  • @Lisa-di1wi

    Although my school days were back in the 60's and 70's, and I never had children myself, I have done some research on parents taking their kids out of school for a family vacation. According to the schools' attendance policies and state laws, family vacations during the school year are unexcused absences. Although they get breaks during the school year and the summer off, family vacations during the school year are much cheaper than in the summer and on school breaks. A lot of parents can't afford to take family vacations during the summer. They also work full-time jobs as well. Depending on the type of jobs that they have, some parents can't afford to take family vacations during the summer. Plus, they want to avoid the summer crowds as well. It not only applies to the public schools, but to the private, the Catholic, and the other religious schools as well. Sure they're going to get flack from the teachers and school administrators. But it's the parents who have control over their kids and their education. Some of them don't like the idea of the schools telling them what can and can't do with their kids. Even some of the teachers won't give them make-up work either. And it's just not for family vacations either. The schools have to very strictly enforce their attendance policies and the states' mandatory attendance laws as well. They also wants parents to schedule medical appointments after school hours as well. After all, there are doctors who have evening and Saturday hours. Depending on the schools' attendance policies, they only consider illnesses where you have a written doctor's note, a death in the family, or a court appearance, as an example, as excused absences. Plus, if your kids aren't going to be in school that day, you have to notify the school by a certain time in the morning. If not, the school will call you to find out why your kids are not in school. Plus, they'll also take it to the next level, and the school will take legal action against them. I have also seen some stories on the TV news about parents being arrested and going to court because their kids were simply missing too much school. You're doing the right thing by homeschooling your kids. The schools today want to control all the details of your personal life, especially off the school grounds. Good luck to you in your homeschooling. You're doing the right thing by educating your kids on your terms instead of the school district's terms. Oh another thing, if kids miss too much school, it affects their state funding. They lose their state funding if the kids are not in school. Here in Pennsylvania, where I live at, and by law, K-12 students have to be in school for 180 days a year.

    Very helpful viewpoints, I really agree and appreciate the things you have shared; regarding a family's overall goals, and mission, as those wanting to follow the Father, and pointing their children to Him, in what they study, and the time they spend together. There is nothing that can replace that time lost, and the values gained, if not at home, and homeschooling. It's such a gift and blessing.

    These choices were fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I also have a little channel mainly about homeschooling and so fun to follow along with likeminded homeschool moms.

    Do you have a 9th grade video?

    I didn’t like the Little House on the Prarie show because I had read and adored the books and I felt like it wasn’t even close to the story that I cherished.

    Are you going to post this next year’s curriculum choices and maybe a review if this past year?

    Before I started homeschooling 3 years ago my husbands biggest concern was not having enough discipline towards doing something or showing up somewhere at a specific time and learning to do things you might not always want to do like go to school for 7 hours a day since it resembles being at a job for 8+ hours as an adult. Lol he’s on board with homeschooling now but how would you respond with that concern?

    Socialization: one reason i homeschool is i don't want my kid associating 8-9 hours/day with fools.

    Year round school for me is not scheduled breaks. We just do school any day we want and don't when there's something more exciting to do.

    I don't grade my kids homeschool either. I think grading is a harmful practice that is required in public school but there's no reason to in homeschool.

    I know this video is a year old, but I’m just watching now. I love all your reasons to homeschool. I’m a second generation homeschool mom myself! My mom homeschooled 4 kids and my siblings and I all now homeschool our kids as well. I’m so thankful for the “homeschool pioneers” that came before.

    I've had all of these. 😮‍💨 When my kids were younger, we'd "do school" in the mornings, have lunch, run errands, and then come home to do read aloud time and art projects/sewing/Lego time. Almost every time we'd be at a grocery midday, someone would ask a child (never ask me) why they weren't in school. They'd always politely reply they'd already done school for the day. I had an older couple look at me after one such reply and say, "well, you must not be doing very much!". I was so mad, I just spouted off about how we didn't waste time getting into lines, taking attendance, moving between classrooms, etc and therefore we were just very efficient. Shut them down quick! 🤩

    Although i feel as if ppl who are public schooled tend to judge more on people who are homeschool. As long as a child is learning to read ,write , do math , survive in the world & is love who cares if its home or public. My peers werent my age infact alot of them were younger than me when it came to socializing infact my husband is older than me most couples arent the same age as it is. Alot of times idk what to say so i just say what ever i feel pressure about to keep the peace. Thank you for this verry helpful .❤️

    I'd love more info on dual enrollment. My freshman may be interested in that in another couple of years.

    Thank you so much. Anxiety can be such a pain. I have the reading thing in common with you. I'm worrying a bit less...just hard not to still and ny child's interest is there as well as ability..but she just gets so mad that nothing continues. I hope she can get through it soon cause she seems interested.

    Thank you so much. This was very helpful. My family shares a place with my mom and stepfather... and I share a room with my 4 year old. I'm getting ready to set these things up and have up one floating shelf and can't wait to put up the next ones . XD
