    I Am Thankful For by Nancy J Carmody I am thankful for …..the mess to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends. …..the taxes that I pay because it means that I’m employed. …..the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat. …..my shadow who watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine. …..the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking. …..all the complaining I hear about our Government because it means we have freedom of speech. …..that lady behind me in church who sings offkey because it means that I can hear. …..lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning, and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home. …..my huge heating bill because it means that I am warm. …..weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means that I have been productive. …..the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I am alive.

    No Lejog is complete without a mist poem ! Morning Mist By David Rudder Did you miss the morning mist Were you still asleep I watched it as it rolled on in Whilst you were counting sheep. I know there was a halo It came and disappeared A luminescence of light That slowly reappeared. It was a magic moment A veil of obscurity It felt just like a blanket A second of security. And then the daylight came Sneaking like a thief Here one second then gone All so very brief. Moisture clung to foliage Silver dewdrops fell Quietness soaked the morning Tween the hill and knell. Brown horses stood like sentinels Out on the milky ground Standing there in silhouette Hardly made a sound. I felt the minutes moving Across the earth and sky I watched the mist you missed As it flew on by. Did you miss the mist this morning It rolled like an ocean wave A blanket of opportunity I saw but couldn’t save. Another fine walk !

    Hi Mark, out of interest as you mention your boots - what do you use? Would be quite interesting to know as far as the kit you've taken, what's worked well and what hasn't? Is there anything you left at home that you wish you'd brought with you?

    • @Mark-Walks
      @Mark-Walks 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m wearing Meindl Vakuum GTX boots, which had already seen a few hundred miles before setting off on this trip. They are now end of life, but worked really well for LEJOG. My kit has worked out well, there’s nothing additional I feel I should have had with me. I’m carrying emergency gear (such as an emergency shelter and a lot of first aid equipment), which hasn’t seen the light of day on this trip (thankfully). Clearly, that’s all added weight for no benefit, but I wouldn’t do a trip like this without any of those things.

      There are lots of sections of the JOGT that are hardly used at all, making the walking slow at times because of vegetation underfoot or ambiguous paths. I know there are lots of people working on improving the route and I’m sure it’ll get there in the years to come, but it’s probably only appropriate for experienced hikers in many places at the moment.

    ) Guillemot by John Hegley ( a poem for anyone walking along the cliffs that might be lucky enough to see one or two) I’m a guillemot I use my skill a lot I get the fish out of the wet I eat my fill a lot. I live on ledges vertical edges eating-wise, I do not know what veg is Don’t give me sherbet give me a turbot my appetite for fish I cannot curb it. Here’s lines more in the manner of George Herbert: The fish, it swimmeth, unaware and, rumbled, down I tumble to my prey, to pluck it forth, my instinct, I obey, from water to the stifling air, I’ll whip the little whipper-snap away. I’m a guillemot, so you don’t thrill a lot? Well, listen humans, very soon you will a lot. Did you know that I can go so deep I’ve been seen from the porthole of a submerged submarine, sixty meters under? I don’t think so. Miss it and blink so I come in hard and I’m able to sink so. I’m a guillemot I know the drill a lot I drill into the drink and get the drink and not the ink upon my quill a lot. I don’t do nesting, when I’m resting I can sleep while I am standing on one leg, and so it doesn’t roll off when I stretch my wings or stroll off I’ve got an egg that’s eccentrically weighted so it rolls around in circles and doesn’t fall over the edge of a cliff. I do my perchin and my researchin then underneath I go I’m no sea-urchin I’m a guillemot I do my speccy reccy from my rocky window sill a lot I am homeless but I’m not gormless, I can go so quick it’s almost like I’m formless I’m a guillemot I find the fishes tend to lose one-nil a lot, but I take only what I need I’m not a greedy bird. I am sustainable. Self restrainable. I am a guillemot. I don’t eat Trill a lot. I’m a guillemot. Am I not?

    If you have an inquisitive ' Butterfly ' mind then you can never be bored - combine that with with naturism also means that you are able to face just the bare facts ( although Mrs Twiglet,an academic,reminds me there are no 'facts ' just current levels of understanding which is constantly changing,and that's a fact ! ). You have a great mix of interests which is very eclectic and an appreciation of the space you are inhabiting at any moment in time.My best shot at enlightenment was at a Zen Seminar years ago studying Hsuan Sung investigating the nature of the mind.Sitting quietly i suddenly blurted out " The essence of mind is intrinsically pure,but mine's like a farmyard - it's full of manure ". Sadhu ! Enjoy the day.

    What i really like about your approach to videography is the way that you quite often stand back in the background and take footage of a very similar looking walker to yourself - same height - same build - same jaunty demeanour strolling along in the distance looking like they haven't got a care in the world - just enjoying the moment they are in.I think you should introduce yourself to them - you've obviously got lots in common ! Amazing how they've kept pace with you virtually from day one.

    Let’s take a walk in the woods Let our eyes, dazzled by screens and bright lights, Relax to the gentle green of leaves And the soaring magnificence of pillared trees. Let our ears, deafened by traffic and blaring music, Relax to the peaceful hum of insects And the scurrying of small creatures in the undergrowth. Let our noses, stifled by smoke and acrid fumes, Relax to the fragile fragrance of flowers And the scents of plant-life growing all around. Let our mouths, numbed by sugars and fake flavours, Relax to the fresh taste of blackberries And tiny tongue-bursts of wild strawberries. Let our hands, hardened by plastic and metal, Relax to the rough beauty of bark And the softness of grass where we sit and rest. Let our minds, busy with hopes and fears, Relax to the ancient peace of the forest And the cycle of nature, which holds us too. Reverend Robert Beard

    300 years can have quite an impact on people's social habits and beliefs - i think Dornoch has very lively bingo nights and whist drives nowadays which helps to subdue and quell the pyromaniacal tendencies - i looked up events in Dornoch but couldn't see any evidence of witch related hobbies or clubs.

    A poem to celebrate day 60 Sir ? Rummage,rummage - ahhh here we are,just the job ! “An Ordinary Day,” by Norman MacCaig I took my mind a walk Or my mind took me a walk- Whichever was the truth of it. The light glittered on the water Or the water glittered in the light. Cormorants stood on a tidal rock With their wings spread out, Stopping no traffic. Various ducks Shilly-shallied here and there On the shilly-shallying water. An occasional gull yelped. Small flowers Were doing their level best To bring to their kerbs bees like Ariel charabancs. Long weeds in the clear Water did Eastern dances, unregarded By shoals of darning needles. A cow Started a moo but thought Better of it-And my feet took me home And my mind observed to me, Or I to it, how ordinary Extraordinary things are or How extraordinary ordinary Things are, like the nature of the mind And the process of observing.
