such a beautiful soul with a voice of gold. she lived and died in her final days as a recluse due to the woe fame bought her, so it was said. a very sad end for a such a talented yet beautifully fragile musician.

I found out that when bossa nova got popular in the USA back in the early 60's, it pissed off a lot of South Americans because that was their sound and it was being abused by all the American singers who were trying to make that Americanized bossa nova their sound.

Like a finely polished gem, it's sparkle and class will never fade. Joao on his own was what he did best, the freedom to elongate and stretch phrases as his whim took him (difficult here with instr doubling on some lines) but Ogerman's arrangement is so timelessly beautiful it doesn't matter. if you haven't heard it check out Oscar Peterson's Wave which Ogerman also arranged and which is quite different to this, and even more ethereal, has an almost ecstatic ending.

This great filmed concert is a great example of what made Astrud so great. Depending on the exact date of this performance, she was 21 or 22 years old.
