Leadership of Service
Jesus tells his disciples that in the world there are leaders who lord it over others or act as tyrants. Then he says "Not so among you. Whoever wants to be great must be a servant and whoever wants to be first must be servant of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." Can we follow Jesus' example in a leadership of service? Based on Mark 10: 35-45.

Because Jesus Loves You, He Invites You to Let Go of Your "One Thing"
มุมมอง 102วันที่ผ่านมา
When the rich man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit the kingdom of heaven, Jesus, looking at him, loves him, so invites him "You lack one thing." Today, Jesus looks at you, and because he love you, he invites you to let go of your "one thing." What is YOUR "one thing"? Based on Mark 10: 17-31
Is Jesus CondemningI Divorce? Or Protecting the Powerless?
มุมมอง 18114 วันที่ผ่านมา
Based on Mark 10:2-16. If Jesus' disciples found his teaching on divorce challenging, how much more do we today, with half of all marriages ending in divorce? Understanding the context in which Jesus lived helps us to understand that Jesus, as always, was seeking to project the "anawim:" the poor, the helpless, the marginalized, the disenfranchised - those who cry out to God for justice. In Jes...
Do NOT Stop Them: God's Wideness versus Our Narrowness
มุมมอง 7721 วันที่ผ่านมา
Who are we to ever limit the mercy, grace, forgiveness and love of God? In Numbers 11 and in Mark 9:38-50, anxious disciples who want "control" over the Spirit, say "Stop them! They are doing God's work and they are not one of "us"! " Both Moses and Jesus say "Do NOT stop them! How I wish that all God's people would prophesy!" God is WIDE; we, however, can be narrow! In what ways have you tried...
The Strength Within You
มุมมอง 58หลายเดือนก่อน
Our world honors exterior strength and certain kinds of "greatness." Jesus reminds us and models for us a whole different kind of strength and greatness. Based on today's gospel from Mark 9:30-37.
Finding Your Life
มุมมอง 94หลายเดือนก่อน
"Who do people say that I am?" Jesus asks his disciples. Then he asks THEM...that is US..."But who do YOU say that I am?" What is your response? Jesus goes on to share his understanding of what being the Messiah will mean: he will suffer and die. NOT what the disciples had in mind. But part of every human life. Suffering has been part of your life, and of mine. "Whoever wants to be my disciple ...
Be Opened!
มุมมอง 64หลายเดือนก่อน
Based on the challenging Gospel Story about Jesus and a Syrophoenician woman, which does not seem to be incongruity with the way Jesus usually welcomes all people, especially "outsiders" and marginalized people. Could it be that this strong and feisty woman actually challenged Jesus, early in his ministry, to "Be opened"? To expand the scope of his ministry beyond his own Jewish people? To welc...
There is Nothing Outside a Person that Defiles; It is What Comes Out that Defiles
มุมมอง 74หลายเดือนก่อน
Based on Jesus' words in Mark, Chapter 7. What is it that comes out of your heart? Is it in congruity with what you say is important? Or is it not? Is it something that defiles?
Lord, to Whom Shall We Go? You Have the Words of Eternal Life
มุมมอง 83หลายเดือนก่อน
When Jesus told his followers they must "eat his flesh and drink his blood," many of his followers found that idea too grotesque, too challenging, so turned back, and no longer followed him. But did Jesus mean that saying on a literal, physical level? Or like everything else in this fourth Gospel, was he speaking on a deeper, spiritual level? When Jesus asked his closest disciples if they too w...
You Are What You Eat
มุมมอง 592 หลายเดือนก่อน
My mother taught me: "You are what you eat." That is why it is important to eat healthy food. If healthy food is important for healthy bodies, what about spiritual food? What kind of spiritual food are you ingesting? What are you taking in to nourish yourself spiritually? Jesus proclaims: "I am the living bread? Whoever eats of me will have eternal life." We are what we eat.
Get Up and Eat, Lest the Journey Be Too Much for You
มุมมอง 542 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jesus said, "I AM the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever drinks from me will never thirst." John 6:35 Today's first reading from 1 Kings 19:4-8 is the story of the great prophet Elijah. After winning the battle against the 400 prophets of Queen Jezebel, Jezebel now wants to kill him. "Elijah was afraid, and ran for his life...a day's journey into the desert wil...
You Already Have What You Are Looking For
มุมมอง 942 หลายเดือนก่อน
After Jesus' miracle of multiplying the loaves and the fishes, the crowds follow him, looking for "something." Jesus tells them not to look for bread that perishes, but for bread that endures for eternal life. He proclaims another I AM saying: I AM the bread of Life. When we have Christ within us, we do not need to keep looking around for something to fill the void in our lives. We already have...
What Is It That YOU Hunger For?
มุมมอง 772 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jesus fed a lot of hungry people. Crowds of thousands kept seeking Jesus. Was it food they were seeking? Or was it perhaps something MORE? What is it that YOU hunger for? Based on John 6:1-21.
Come Away with Me to a Quiet Place and Rest Awhile
มุมมอง 1133 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jesus invites his disciples, "Come away with me to a quiet place, and rest awhile." In the midst of all of the needs, cares, and burdens of your life, can you hear Christ sharing this invitation with you? How do you "come away with Christ?" Through daily prayer and meditating upon God's Word? Through worship? Through spending time with God in God's amazing creation? Why does Jesus tell us to "r...
We Too Shall Rise
มุมมอง 693 หลายเดือนก่อน
Have you in your life ever felt that those who oppose you or oppress you seem to win? That is the feeling we may have when we read this weekend's Gospel from Mark 6: 14-29, about the beheading of John the Baptist. But since Christ was raised from the dead, then John the Baptist is indeed raised from the dead, and no matter what we are facing, we too shall rise!

This attracted my attention as I've worked with the street homeless for 10+ years now and couldn't do it well without a realistice change practice and Serenity is a best practice... Something to share from Claude and I: "Moral Man and Immoral Society" is one of Reinhold Niebuhr's most influential works. Published in 1932, this book is considered a landmark in Christian ethics and social philosophy. Here are some key points about the book: 1. Main Thesis: Niebuhr argues that there's a fundamental disconnect between individual morality and group behavior. He posits that individuals can be moral, but groups and societies tend to be self-interested and less ethical. 2. Critique of Liberal Idealism: Niebuhr challenges the prevailing optimistic view that education and reason alone can solve social problems. He argues that this view underestimates the role of power and self-interest in group dynamics. 3. Power and Justice: The book emphasizes the importance of power in achieving social justice. Niebuhr contends that purely moral suasion is insufficient to bring about significant social change. 4. Realism in International Relations: Niebuhr's ideas influenced the field of international relations, promoting a "Christian realism" that acknowledges the role of self-interest and power in global politics. 5. Critique of Pacifism: While respecting individual pacifists, Niebuhr argues against pacifism as a social philosophy, believing that it fails to address the realities of power and conflict in society. 6. Social Ethics: The book laid the groundwork for Niebuhr's later works on social ethics, emphasizing the complexity of moral decision-making in a societal context. 7. Influence: "Moral Man and Immoral Society" has had a lasting impact on political theory, theology, and social ethics. It's often cited in discussions about the relationship between individual morality and collective behavior. This work represents Niebuhr's shift from a more optimistic liberal Christianity to a more realistic and nuanced view of human nature and society. It remains relevant in discussions about social justice, political realism, and the ethical challenges of collective action.
