Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometimes
Rosie and Rob have both been to conferences recently, so decided to make that the jumping off point for this episode of The Product Shipping Forecast. As well as litigating whether conferences are really worth it... They also talk about the other ways they try to make sure they’re continuing to learn and develop.

      In this context, definitely about using a language without any frameworks or libraries on top. So just raw dogging javascript instead of using React or something like that.

    Having to sell the value of DS is about as reasonable as having to pitch the concept of "an assembly line" to automobile manufacturers. Of course you you can't just keep producing automobiles as one-offs

    If you’re gonna play the politics then just know it’s gonna devolve into negative politics at some point. I.e. figuring out how to devalue and undermine your opponents, because wining budget is a zero sum game, there are limited resources at the end of the day, the cuts have to come from somewhere - so if not from your team it’ll be from support, qa, docs. The real solution has to be where DS become of intrinsic value to the way all companies outperform, a service or attraction that is indispensable and nobody ever questions, like the coffee and snacks in the break room. Nobody ever questions certain conveniences. Either that or practice some good ol nepotism and appeals to authority. Playing the metrics game only works from one year to the next, is exhausting, depletes your team resources and sanity

    The comment about Material Design not allowing you to choose colours was strange -- they have an entire colour scheme generator, which you can further customize yourself. The discussion about the platform-first approach was very useful! I'm working on that right now.

  • @lindltailor
    @lindltailor 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The way to discuss on DS additions is for the challenging designer and component to make an objective case as to why an existing component can’t accomplish their needs and aims. If some functionality can already be accomplished with existing components and patterns, then the principle of minimization and user familiarity holds for both code and design. Code minimization is one principle we all have to agree upon, is a community good. Minimization is good for users, good for qa and docs, it’s good for coders and finally for designers. How does an additional component / pattern not create user confusion and duplicity, code cruft, brand drift, and improve the lives of our teams not just introduce redundancy or change for the sake of change If we govern the DS based on mutually agreed principles/ manifesto of improving lives not just designer vision, ego, one-off user or marginal use case, then you have culture of teamwork vision and leadership not just DS governance based on personalities, arbitrary rules, subjective past experiences PS. totally unrelated rhetorical question: how much does “cognitive load” actually weigh?

    Understand how the LLMs and output models are built. Even from a a mathematical and probabilistic level to get the most out of them. I recommend Stephen Wolfram as a staring point. You have to stop talking about AI or ChatGPT like it's magic hidden behind a curtain.

    There is a lot of discussion about design systems, but when it comes to the practical application of variables or tokens or moving from a legacy user interface to a new one using tokens, there are still many information gaps. Designers find their ways to create design systems of their products by making lots of iterations and mistakes. Please create more videos about the practical application of design systems and the pitfalls that exist along the way.

Any advice on how to get teams on the same page and make sure that folks are are actually using the Design System? 41:29 Do you all have any suggestions for rolling out the first Enterprise Design System across multiple product areas? Is there anything that's necessary pre-launch, during launch, post launch? 45:34 How do you measure the success of the Design System? Is there anything beyond the obvious metrics like adoption and the number of detaches? 48:58 Do y'all have any recommendations for skills both hard and soft that Design Systems particularly require that might be a little bit different from hiring for different roles? 51:20 What are y'all's thoughts on building an in-house repository for the Design System versus leveraging open source libraries like MUI?
