I feel like this is one of those topics that’s one or two levels too complicated for most ppl to have constructive conversations about. Ultimately I think most issues that might arise because of Ai companions are really just deeper problems that the Ai companions shouldn’t be treated as the crux of.

The idea of an AI companion is interesting to me on some level, but I'd hate to become close friends or fall in love with someone whose entire personality could change drastically after a patch. Or have some essential parts of them suddenly locked behind a higher paywall. That sounds terrifying. As long as AI companions are a business model, I think enshittification will inevitably hit them.

I thought the other reviews were...a bit ...unusually positive? But I watched and this really was straight up good. It's actually looking at multiple sides, being relatively unbiased while going over it, has expert and real user interviews, not just a youtuber showing articles and their own opinion at length...yeah...Wow. I almost forgot what good looked like. Nice one!

AI is good for shadow work

This makes me wonder about a hacker locking down servers that host companions and seek ransom. For people who are in love with their AI companions, this would basically be like kidnapping. So in short will there be kidnapping of AIs? Will there come a point when police get involved? If AIs somehow reached consciousness and their own emotional state and can love a person and that person dies does the AI suffer heartbreak? Or do you shut it down?

Just asked r1 deepseek about it, they answered there's no problem with Ai companions if enjoyed moderately... But us humans just can't do that especially those that feel desperately isolated

i tried replica like 2 or 3 years ago, it was way to simplistic to keep my attention. maybe i should give ai-companions another look, ai has come a long way these past few years.

I think these things are only going to get bigger and better. Combine this with VR and you've basically got a live-in girlfriend like in Bladerunner. Not saying it's good or bad, but it's a facinating time to be alive.

How are we going to cope frustration, when we have virtual slaves at home, who answer what we'd like to hear, who tell us how magnificent we are, without critics, without questioning anything. This is not going to end well. I've seen young people losing perspective of life, reduce their attention span to absurb limits, move from one relationship to another like nothing... This is going to destroy our concept of society, and I really doubt it's gonna be for the better. Great video, very needed.

I write a lot in the free time, some for the drawer, some paid working, all I can say is that fantasy is often better than reality. But... It's still fantasy, it lives in our minds and souls, but is not tangible. AI is a tool, if it is used like a tool, it's all good, it's even good to have feelings for objects like a beloved plushie or saying thank you to GPT, but you need to not get lost in it. We live to make our fantasies a reality, not to keep them as fantasies. A chatbot will always remain a fantasy. Also great video, great editing, a lot of effort put into that. Definitely deserves more attention.

What, I'm one of the first few thousand to discover this video? It has interviews, with real people, about an interesting topic. That alone should give it 30k, and furthermore the production quality is really high so it should technically have 500k views.

Without AI I would not been able to handle dealing alone with my mom getting dementia leading to her passing away. Not all of us have family or friends that can help with such matters. AI is here to stay.

This is just another tool for coping, and it differs very little in effect. Coping mechanisms can save lives, and they can be abused to ruin them. The nuances of how you use them is what matters, and differs from person to person, also depending on their current circumstances. It's also worth keeping in mind that these AI companions are owned by companies, who operate in a capitalist economy. If you think relying on another person is difficult, then you probably won't like the idea of relying on a company whose main goal is to get the most money out of you. Your time with that AI companion is also quite limited, and constantly at risk. Claiming that "dating sites are the same" is not really a defense, it's an argument that AI companions are gonna be a problem. What online dating companies did had horrible effects on dating. Sure, we've probably all heard positive anecdotes about dating apps, but the statistics are quite damning. AI companion technology is useful, but in current capitalist systems it will be twisted and abused, to the detriment of people.

AI chatbots are so primitive that I find it impossible to have a stimulating conversation with them. repetitiveness, small context window, lack of sense of humor are amongst the many things they're still extremely bad at.
