A supercapacitor with Water in salt electrolyte
This video describes the construction of an EDLC (Electrostatic double-layer capacitor) supercapacitor with WIS (Water in salt electrolyte) electrolyte.
The use of a high concentration of salts in the water makes it possible to reach high working voltages of up to 2.8 volts, comparable to those of
commercial supercapacitors that use electrolytes based on organic solvents, which are typically flammable and toxic.
This video is a follow-up to my other 2 videos: "Flexible graphite sheets for batteries" th-cam.com/video/CJnWq3MzMNo/w-d-xo.html

    I am a little curious why you didn't soak your layers of non-woven cloth in the electrolyte and then use your press to compress them down to a desired amount of saturation. I feel it would probably result in a more even spread of the liquid. Either way, this seems like a decent result from a home lab an a terrific way to turn a marginal supply of power into something useful.

      I have to admit that soaking the non-woven fabric directly into the electrolyte is a better solution, in fact in the preparation of another supercapacitor I adopted this technique

    I suspect one might make a more active surface area by adding some the salt to the carbon slurry instead. When the water dries the salts crystalizes. The theory is that later when water is added, the crystals disolve and leave behind voids for ions to hide their charges in when the plates are charged.

    Using nickel current collectors instead of aluminum. and a sodium sulfate or potassium carbonate electrolyte. and graphite and activated charcoal mixed 50/50 I was able to achieve a conductivity of 10 to 30 ohms directly measuring with the probe of multimeter anywhere across the surface of the active material on resistance scale setting I also tried a sample with pure graphite only and achieved 0.5 to 2 ohms. Nickel works much better than aluminum foil. more durable. more resistance to electrolyte and very high performance. I achieved over 500mA of current maximum charging current from a 0.57 farad test sample being able to charge and discharge instantly in less than one second. Very low internal resistance. and much more powerful. Size was only 0.4 inch by 1.25 inch and active material thickness only 0.3mm And a sheet of angel soft brand toilet paper tissue. Or a sheet of coffee filter paper (Coffee filter paper better durability more porous and consistent thickness) cut to size It works up to about 1 to 1.2 volts with very high performance. I used 10 to 20% polyvinyl acetate by weight to dry active material powder mix as the binder. no graphite sheet. no stainless steel mesh. nothing extra. Just be sure to roughen up the surface of the nickel sheets or foil before applying the active material layer to get it to stick better. Paint and spread a thin layer and let it dry overnight.

      Thanks for sharing news about your trial, it's useful news! I use aluminum foil as a collector which then undergoes corrosion. In my last video I made a supercapacitor with protected aluminum that should solve the corrosion problem. For now, it works, but we will have to wait to see the final results. If it goes wrong I will use other metals, such as nickel foil, an alternative could be stainless steel foil

    • @realflow100

      @@claudiohomelab8181 Yes stainless could also be used. Nickel might be slightly easier to work shape cut or handle. sand or roughen the surface etc. I recommend if your using flat sheets to highly roughen the surfaces thoroughly with sandpaper or similar roughening options before applying the active material coating. Makes it stick a lot better and you get a much better easier wetting of the active material and better bond. more conductivity. Sodium sulfate will give highest performance but too much will cause crystal precipitation to form. At room temperature probably 50% to 75% of the maximum solubility will be a good target. Too close to 100% will form precipitation and reduce performance. Nickel works extremely well much better than aluminum No oxide layer formation and high resistance to corrosion in neutral or strong alkaline electrolytes.

    Hello Claudio, Would pouring the graphite foil directly on to the aluminium collector with the mould to limit its spread not eliminate one of the passages in making the electrode? Would there be any negative alterations to its performance? Thanks J

    • @claudiohomelab8181

      Hello Joseph, I can't print the graphite foil directly on the aluminum foil because the foil shrinks during drying and due to the stiffness of the aluminium would result in a completely cracked foil. Look here: th-cam.com/video/CJnWq3MzMNo/w-d-xo.html at 07:29 As you can see the foil contracted but the thin plastic sheet followed its deformation and the foil is perfectly intact.

    A very interesting study. I studied the issue of the use of hypochlorite and aluminum for the production of electricity outside the house. Solar panels cannot always be used. I used foil, since its surface is great for sufficient current strength. As another electrode, I used stainless steel or titanium. The element voltage was 1.8-2 V without load. Try to use noble metal or inert metal. Perhaps a thin layer of platinum applied to a polymer film with a large surface. I also believe that you can use a large concentration of hypochlorite.

    It isn't rechargeable. It works better if you use a cathode of a metal oxide or salt mixed into pressed graphite. Bleach is doing more or less the same thing as NaOH since it has a lot of NaOH in it to stabilize the NaOCl. What you want would be to have the anode donate the oxygen to react with the aluminum but make the electrolyte as unreactive as possible with the aluminum because the hydrogen made quenches the voltage output. An aluminum/manganese dioxide-graphite in propylene carbonate will generate a bit over 2.8V.

    Hi Claudio, I think adding graphene would massively increase the conductivity of these sheets. I know, easy to say, but I've seen some interesting video from Robert Murray-Smith: th-cam.com/video/_TbpLVrTc94/w-d-xo.html He shows how to produce grahene having graphite, milk proteine and a kitchen blender. Maybe this video inspire you. BTW, thanks for your video, good luck

    To easily identify the different phases, you can cross the wires one by one. When you cross the same wires on a phase it increases the difficulty of turning the motor. This is if you don't have a testing unit to find the phases.

    What kind of binder can i use?

    • @claudiohomelab8181

      Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). other types of binders can also be used, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). But PVAc is the easiest to use

    ATTENTION!!!! Do not attempt to dissolve Sodium Hydrate with water. It is going to blow. It should be sodium hydroxide, not sodium hydride!!!!
