The thing I love about Mephiles is that he is an ennemy exclusive to Shadow. The guy went straight to the badass character instead of the main protagonist. Sonic never met him, let alone fight him. He only got just a glimpse of Mephiles in the future before he disappeared.

Spoilers Ahead: It's absolutely insane to see him not be forgotten and actually make it back into another game. I feel like people easily see him as just another Sonic or actually Shadow villain when he is literally one if not THE most powerful of them all. I mean he is literally one half of a god and while other villains tried to kill Sonic for multiple games, he literally just showed up for 1 scene and did it just like that. Absolutely insane.
Mephiles : *One shot sonic and kill him* Also mephiles : *appeard in the most bad game ever made on sonic* He deserve to come back !
