Great video, I live in So. Cal and your locations, the mountains and light are very cool 👍😎 and the trains too lol ty
Are the locomotive s in a string, controlled by the front one for powering up and braking, and I suppose the middle and rear helpers are in radio link with the front crew.? Sorry I'm in the UK, we don't have anything like this over here.
I believe so. The helpers at the back were the only manned ones other than the lead engine
@@thehighiron thanks for that.
Great scenery and great railroad pictures shots. Keep up the good work
Thank you sir
Great scenery and great actuation
Great vid 👍😎
Thanks man
Awesome!
Bunch of hood doors open. Guessing there's a slight cooling problem. 3 SD40-2s for yard work sure is a lot of power for basic switching. He's either building the bottom end of ladder built trains for outbound or retrieving inbound tracks getting them set up for classification.
Imagine getting stuck waiting for this train at a crossing
Beautiful shot , this is why i love trains. Now I have some scale models of these. Sharp picture awesome.👍
Thank you!
Nice set of catches.
Thanks
Awesome set of catches. Have a great weekend.
You too!
Great video of trans! Lots of action n tracks!
Ah Pepper Street Bridge - what a great location to watch trains!!! Nice shots of the various trains!!!! Keep it up!
Thank you sir
Gorgeous fall colors - nice shots!!!!
It is a very nice location
Clean power instead of Oxnard, Gemco and LA service unit
Yep!
Great action👍
As an employee that has ran this length of track 15 years ago, I always have to laugh at the notion what people think trains length are. 😂 The public has No idea what they are talking about.
Apparently not. All I did was count the cars and everyone and their mother had something to say about even just that.
@ I’m not going to correct you or anybody else. It’s just an observation that people are counting 3 or 5 packer as 1 car. It’s totally not as viewed from the side of the road. Look it up yourself.
@@diegohorton869 I’ll keep counting them as separate but alright
@@thehighiron internet is here to help you, be better than others.
My ol "stomping grounds"Back in the SP days. And roaring EMD six axle power.
I must applaud some here for being so arrogant and full of themselves to think that they know better than the railroads themselves how to move freight around..lol
Exactly
What was the axle count?
I don’t know. Calculate it yourself. I already provided the amount of cars.
Great video. Really appreciated you moving away from the crossing. I hate the newer crossings that chime the entire time the arms are down, it takes away from the awesome sounds of the train itself.
Yeah we realized it was gonna do that for a while so we left.
I saw a grainer go past me on the Rosetown subdivision with one AC pulling 160 cars, I counted em lol, they’re empty though
Awesome sauce
(11:3) Petey pickup's gonna be waiting awhile.
Absolutely an awesome Video!👍😎
Hey man I'm a retired engineer and I cut my teeth on savere mountain grade territory. I always wanted to know the length and tonnage. Do you know what they were? I was hoping you would give us a shot of the whole train after he got over the top running at speed. Wow eleven units on it.
274 cars of empty pumpkin spice latte crates heading out, 3 trains of frozen turkeys heading in
Now is that 274 independent cars or you counting spin cars which looks like 5 but counts as one? Reason I’m asking if it’s 274 spin cars, then it would be longer and heavier, or it would actually be less cars. So doing the math it could have actually been 54 spins and 4 independent well cars just guessing. Then the first car was an articulated car so that leaves just one independent well car. Neat fact is I know I seen some 20’ containers so just rough idea some 550 possibly more containers on this train. That’s a lot trucks not on the highways and interstate and it only took 10 locomotives to do it instead of 550+ trucks.
In all likelihood "cars" refer to 'platforms', as the presence of single-unit, three and five-piece articulated cars mixed together muddies the result of any attempt to count cars. I use the platform-as-cars methodology since I've seen plenty of stack trains that turned into manifests halfway through, and a strict articulated-as-single method would give a misleading idea of the train's length (as if it was for any purpose other than the viewer's curiosity).
Great video. We love these huge freight train videos in the U.K. But a big question. When they finally reach their destination, how are all the wagons uncoupled and distributed out at the marshalling yards. Then each container has to be unloaded and the goods taken away. Must be a massive operation. Would be great if you could do a video about this for us Brits. 🙋♂️👏👏🇬🇧
They're generally unloaded at dedicated intermodal facilities using smaller versions of the type of gantry cranes seen at container ship terminals, or machines that amount to giant fork lifts equipped to pick up containers by their top corners. The train consists themselves don't change much, if containers need to continue on another train they'll be staged at the facility and then loaded on the next train headed to their destination where they'll be transferred to trucks for the "last mile" journey. An exception to this practice would occur when small blocks of container cars travel in manifest (mixed) freights like the one visible in the distance at 0:46. Those will make their way to intermodal facilities when their train reaches its destination yard.
This 274 cars train is almost ... 6 km long. Each car is at least 20m long plus locomotives. Really cool video.
No it’s about 5 km long
@NorCaliRailroading2023 Yes. Some cars are shorter..
@@paweszaduro7946 it’s cause on a different video, there was a 295 car long intermodal train, the same type in the video, was 18000ft long or a little more than 5km and this one was shorter by 20 cars
BNSF Execs: “We don’t believe in PSR 😊” Also BNSF:
Pretty much
One very long stack train. Thank You.
Una verdadera belleza además de imponente
Great catch & video! Thanks!!!
Stop for a break and a brake check before heading downhill?
I think it was to let the other train pass and then stop to check breaks and let the helpers leave.
Excellent Video 🚂🚂
What is the station locations here? The subs in southern California are parking lots
I’m not sure of this exact location but it’s just off Summit Valley rd
Between Lugo and Summit on the Cajon subdivision
First time seeing helpers on a BNSF😊
274 cars ? That’s pretty disruptive of communities and emergency services. But anything for better RTI, Return to investors…shareholders
Treat the railroad like crap to pump up the stock price. Definitely worked for the Rock Island.
Where was this container stack train assembled and it's symbols origin and destination?
I don’t know. I just watch trains
Likely this train is actually 2 trains which originated at different locations but are both heading to Long Beach and thus converged and were coupled together somewhere in the middle of the journey. Where they originated is anybody's guess from Illinois to Texas and anywhere in between.
@@davidwhiting1761that’s what I assumed
Are they allowed to push on articulated cars with all 3 units on the rear? I'm also wondering about hooking up the EOT, they can operate with an engine coupled to the last car
Yep. So long as the power is balanced and the cars are loaded to weights greater than 45 tons apiece you can shove with all units. It's not like they're shoving empty cars or a caboose - then there'd be some restrictions. I would guess it'd be allowed to shove on a train with it's EOT in place - so long as the helper doesn't need to tie in to the train's brakeline. Locomotives specifically assigned to helper service anymore have a device called Helperlink which pulls up the pin from the coupling at the push of a button and uncouples the helper from the train while the train is in motion so that the train being assisted can continue its journey without having to stop to uncouple the helpers and the helpers can return to base sooner. You don't have to have the helper tied in to the brakeline with Helperlink. This train likely had to borrow the 3 helper locomotives from a following train in order to get up the grade, so in this instance since the helpers aren't equipped with Helperlink they have to tie in to the train's brakeline and stop to uncouple at the Summit, and if you have to tie into the brakeline you have to remove the EOT in order to access to brake pipe. The helper crew replaced the EOT before rolling back down the grade.
Looks to be 3x4x3 power S train
Imagine combining two trains into one and then still needing a manned helper to make it up a hill.. wow.
Teeeeechnically, probably only about 100 cars, as the 3- and 5-packs are officially a single car. But from most practical points of view, it makes much more senes to call it 274, as you did.
Okay but who actually counts 3 and 5 packs as single cars. Never really knew people chose to do that.
@@thehighiron The railroad does, which is why the whole thing has a single road number. Historically, it's also the reason for those permanently coupled pairs of airslide hoppers: they counted as one car when calculating fees for switching. Anyway, not criticizing you, just making a nerd point.
In which case you say "platforms" and not cars.
@@beeble2003no I get you
@@thehighiron- My understanding is the reason for the unit (3, 5 unit 'cars') is to reduce tare weight, thus efficiency.
No to productive
Seems to me that this single train was performing the job of 100s of trucks. And only added additional power where need to get over the summit.
@@tomedgar4375actually about 540 trucks. Good point you make!
Great action 👍😎
Thanks
are all these engines online? Do restrictions on how many engines can be online apply to these behemoth trains?
No I’m pretty sure you can have as many engines online for this purpose
All engines are on and needed climbing out of Los Angeles up to the high eastern deserts. They are also needed going down hill for dynamic braking. As trains have crashed down that hill due to brake failure.
they reckon after 9locomotives the signal gets a bit fuzzy ( through the jumper cable )
