Kate was traumatized by her sister's "accident". Kate's sister was an addict (information provided in the notes and her medical history) and she was blaming her sister for being negligent. Now, there is no indication of Kate being a bad sister, but that's what the story tells us from the notes. Kate discovered her sister in the apartment, which is why she moved to the hotel (information provided in the dialogue with her therapist, which also tells about Kate's sister's "accident). In the end, you can speculate that what Kate saw in the hotel room was her imagination, her guilt over the sister, so she took the weapon and "did a bad thing", you know. The story doesn't have another ending, because things like this happen and with the game I was able to somehow raise the awareness for such a serious topic.
